I've seen the video of the swim start -- looks like controlled madness.  should be interesting.

rafikichapman - 2010-11-21 5:44 PM Well I got through my Philly marathon.... missed my sub 4hr goal but it was due to bonking at mile 22. Until that point I was cruising to a 3:52. My quads didn't get the msg that they had to do a 2nd marathon within 5 weeks and launched a full out protest. Luckily I won the battle and still finished with a 4:15. All and All I'm pleased considering I never ran more than 5 miles before April of this year and I've now completed two full marathons within 5 weeks! Plus I now know I can push through extreme pain ... something that will come in handy next August :-) I'll just have to get my sub 4hr at the National in DC in March!

Great job at Philly! I was there too - we must have been right around each other, because I ended up finishing in 3:52. I was tagging the 3:50 pace group til about mile 19, then fell back a bit... Blond girl, all in black with white arm warmers.

Anyway, congrats!

Happy Thanksgiving to all future IMLou finishers!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
We drove through Louisville on the way to TN for our T-Day destination yesterday. It totally got my heart pounding. My intention is to stop by the course tomorrow on our way home to film the first installment of my video log.
We'll see how it goes.
Peace,
Sam

Hi Everyone,  registered yesterday.  2nd IM, 1st Lou, finished FL this year.  training focus for the winter is to better my general fitness but specifically swim and run.  I'm a little concerned with the non-wetsuit swim, only because I have a seperated shoulder.  Race plans are 1/2 marathon early March, 30k race in late March, Marathon mid May, 1/2iron early July, louisville in August and  something on the fall.

Looking forward to my last weekend off....  need to get back into the swing of things!

Cheers,

Chris

I actually really, REALLY enjoyed the mass start at Wisconsin. Something about 2800 people all treading water at the same time together, all hearing the music and crowd and announcer count down together, singing the national anthem in the water... it was surreal and amazing. I had a great experience - not nearly as violent as I thought it would be. In fact I had open water for over half of the swim. I just don't want everyone to think that mass IM starts are as horrible as others would have you think.

All that said, I'm also looking forward to experiencing the LOU start.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving, chock full of gluttony!  After all, isn't that why we do all of this?  Okay, maybe not.  But still...

Monday will be the first day of focused training for the Carlsbad Marathon (late Jan).  I filled out my training plan today and targeted a goal time of 2:57 - 10 minutes faster than last year.  Might be aggressive, but hopefully that will get me out the door a little more often.  I really have no excuse living here in San Diego.  Spin 3 times a week in the AM and at least 3 run workouts (int, tempo and long), along with the occasional Saturday long ride / brick - and (maybe) some swimming - should get me through the winter.

Carlsbad, Oceanside 70.3, Boston and Honu 70.3 will make for a busy spring, but should help prep for Louisville.  I'll throw in a few local shorter distance events and, depending on how things go in Hawaii, I might look into a tuneup HIM (if there are any that are still open in June).

Until Monday, I'll continue loading...

Lisa-
Don't hear me wrong. My IMMOO mass swim start was an interestint experience and as you mentioned, was not really a big deal. I just prefer the IMLOU start.
It's all good. It's just different.
Peace,

Congrats to you as well! I'm a bit disappointed in my last 4 miles but lesson learned. I probablly went out a bit too fast as well....I just wanted to break four hours so tracking with the 3:50 crowd was not smart. I'm envious of your time :-)

I can only compare my IMLOU start to those of Eagleman and other 70.3 mass starts, so not a HUGE group, but the controlled madness of IMLOU was awesomely nerve-wracking.

You wait all morning to get in line, the line stands still for a long time as you hear the gun go off for pros, and eventually the line starts moving...

By the time you are in the first half of the remaining line you are literally jogging to go fast enought o keep up with the line.

Once you hit the docks it is even closer to a slow run down the docks.. and into the water.

Lots of fun.

I really didn't have any navigating trouble the first half, the river is wide enough that there was only some contact for me, but coming back down the other side, when you got close the bridges, people seemed to clump up.

Can't wait.  I really doubt I'mm improve my swim time from this year, but I know I'll beat my run and bike.

We'll I pulled the plug on the registration this morning and I'm in now. This will be my first IM and I'm a bit stunned that I did it.

I'm definately looking forward to it, excited and scared at the same time. My next step will be to count the weeks back and figure out when I need to start my training plan and map out the rest of my summer tri's.

I'll have lots of questions before August 28th.

Good luck to all.

Peter

Everyone: Here is the link to my first attempt at my IMLOU video log.
Let's just say it doesn't suck...too badly. Admittedly, there is a certain suckage value.

Very cool, Sam. I found the video beneficial. This will be my first IM and I can't wait to go to Louisville to preview and ride the course. In the meantime, your videos will work just fine. Thanks for posting.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING ALL!!!  I love 4 day weekends, tons of time to get out and do high quality workouts.

Hooray Peter - it's not as scary as it seems.  You'll do great.  And I've done two and still have tons of questions.

Tri-Sam - can't wait for the video.  You rock!

Been having some knee pains over the last few weeks and after talking to 2 of my buddies (1 is a PA for ortho and another is an athletic trainer) is looks like I might have patellar tendinitious. I am going to the Doc this week, might get an MRI to really discover what is going on. My coach gave it over 10 days of rest with some light swimmming and knee pain is still there. Doesn't hurt with walking but the second I begin to jog it flares up real quick. Hopefully we can get this figured out and get over this And get back to my training for IMLOU.

So, here's the thing.
I went swimming for the first time tonight since September.
Let's just say they are still cleaning the rust out of the pool.
...I hope it doesn't clog the drains.

Peace.

OK.  If you all (or as they say here in TX, y'all) can get to the pool, I will make the effort to start swimming.  It's the hardest part of tri for me to train for.  Just looking at a black line for hours on end leaves me wanting more.  I know - no whiners.  THanks for the motivation.
