I think the PT I saw might have suggested that. I'm going to try to make it to InStep this week and get new shoes. I hate taking time off because I don't want to lose (what little) fitness I have!!

kduncan - 2011-01-03 10:54 PM Did the first workout tonight 24 minutes on the spin bike and 12 minute swim. Not bad. I really gotta work on getting comfortable on a bike. Until I get equipment, which bike at the gym is the best to train on? I used a spin bike tonight.

Spinning is great!  I love it. perhaps too much.  Try to get into a spin class, it will get you moving better than on your own.  I find that it does really help cycling.  will give you a good base to work from.

texastriman - 2011-01-04 3:30 PM The group can't be too full for ME, can it?

NAME: texastrim (Chris)

STORY: Weighed 330lbs at the high point. I lost 108lbs and decided to do a Sprint Tri. I finished it and felt as though i had completed a double ironman... ha!! I have raced  a handful of Tri's and a couple of Running Races. I have completed two HIM's and did ok. My strong point is the Bike and my weak link is my Run. Doing IM MOO in 2011.... Tammy has been coaching me for two years and under her direction I improved immensly.

FAMILY STATUS:
Dating - 3 Kidos

CURRENT TRAINING: A little bit.

THIS YEAR'S RACES: I only raced two races in 2010.. Galveston HIM - 5:49:46 and Dallas Rock 'n Roll Half Mary - 1:49:34.

2011 RACES:  Ironman Wisconsin. May be persuaded into a few more races... Just want to beat LRUNFIT in a couple of sprints...

WEIGHTLOSS:
I want to go below 195lbs and see what type of run speed and power on the bike I can get.....

Tam is a great coach and Lisa (lrunfit) and Dave (oriolepwr) are great folks. Let's all have a great season and hit our goals....

Hey Chris!!  Nice to see you here.  Didn't know you are also doing IM-WI     Awesome!    You are kind of ruining the "I'm the only dude in here vibe"  But I'm good with it.  Welcome!

One of my goals is to go to yoga once a week. I haven't come up with a cardio goal. It'll probably be swimming related because my stinkin' injuries have made anything else difficult. Poor Susie.

So how was everyone's training day?

I got in a slow 3 mile run in and 60 min spin on the trainer.

Not sure about January goals.... Hmmm... How about consistent training per my plan? Getting my long run up to 11 miles before the end of the month?

I am going to renew my swimming pass for the high school pool tomorrow.

I plan to stick to my improved nutrition plan (wont' call it a "diet") and be under 132 by the end of the month

I did an hour on the trainer and an hour in the pool, both work-outs prescribed by my coach.  Not much gas in the tank today so the swim was disappointing.  I seem to have very poor flexibility in my right shoulder (not really any pain though) and it's affecting my form.  Not sure how to address that.

Topic hop:   What kind of tire do you all use for your trainers?  I noticed that mine has worn all the tread off my tire in the past month.  I just learned I'm supposed to use a "trainer tire".  Not sure what that is.  Guess I should just head to the bike store but let me know if you have any recommendations.  Thanks!

Is anyone in the Milwaukee area interested in getting together for a Computrainer ride? They offer them at Emery's for $10 for 2 hours (I think).

Tammy - 2400 yards of swimming for the whole  month???

My goal is to do whatever Tammy tells me to...which means lots of biking and maybe if she is really nice to me some more running

I actually go to Attitude Sports in Pewaukee for Computrainer sessions.

As for shoes there will be a bit of a debater here...Tammy runs for Instep and I run for Performance Running Outfitters so out of loyalty to my store (and I really do think that they are very knowledgable) I would suggest going there

Cycle class at 0530 this morning!!  I felt like I didn't get my HR up like I do when I run or swim, but when I checked it, it was up.......just different form of cardio I guess.  Anyone else experience this?

January goal:  Get started on biking; transition into more balanced training. I'm doing a duathlon (1500m swim, 10K run) in mid-February so still focused more on running and swimming, but need to start riding 2-3 times a week once I get back to Vietnam (this weekend), 3-4 after the Feb. race. Think I need to dial back on running--have been doing more longer runs than planned lately due to working in favorite routes/ Mom wanting to follow on bike at home--and my legs need a break from it!

My long-term goal this year with biking--don't know if it's realistic but hope so-- is to be able to maintain 20 mph. pace for 40K (1:15). If I could do this, given my swim and bike times I could be competitive in my age group and top 6-10 overall in many regional races. That would be more satisfying than my first Oly--out of 136 finishers (both genders), believe I was #35 for the swim, #29 for the run, and....ugh....#123 for the bike! Granted, it was a rental fat-tire mtn. bike that seemed to weigh more than I did, but still.....I have fierce competitive instincts and getting passed by everyone on their fancy road bikes was a humbling and kind of enraging experience!

Definitely - have never done these before.  I should check out their website.  I have a weird work schedule but I'm sure I could find some time to attend.

Let me know when you're interested! I work banker's hours (since I'm a banker ). I'd go to Attitude if it's more convenient too!

My goal for January is to start working out again....beginning with 3 days a week. My HIM program doesn't start until April and I want to work my way up gradually so I don't experience the burn out I did last year. Last year I started training pretty hard in January for a July race and by June I was just ready to get it over with.

I teach spin at the Waukesha Y at 9:15 Wednesday morning and at Princeton at 7:30 Saturday mornings. Pi-yo at the Y after spin on Wednesday and 5:30 AM tread and shred at Princeton.

For the HR and spin thing it took me a while to get used to getting my HR up too.  It is easier when  I teach because I have to talk at the same time ....when I am taking someone else's class I usually bump up the resistance or change up the interval depending on who is teaching.  What I always tell  my class is to go at your own pace and listen for my cues...some people are in better shape than others (I don't tell them that exactly ).

Chris - glad to see you decided to join us!

Last winter a friend gave me some old tires and I used those.  This year I am just using my tire from last year...I figure I will get a new one in the Spring.  From what I have heard is that trainer tires are not necessary and an added expense.

I'm using my regular tire. I also heard recently that it's recommended to have another tire. I honestly had never thought of that.

Trainer tires are any old tire laying around, nothing special. Mostly to keep good tires from getting wear spots I am more concerned about the rear skewer. The skewer I use is cheap and heavy so it doesn't bend as much as the normal one.

Off the to run now.
