snakemau - 2011-01-21 12:15 AM Well I need to recalculate my weight goal.  Before I was aiming for 154 so I can be at the border of "normal" weight for the estimated BMI for my height  of 66". But then I need to find a good lab so I can get an assessment, cause honestly i have no clue what my ideal weight should be in order to be fit and be able to train and do triathlon. Any suggestions?

Oh and thanks for the info about the hydro test. The nearest center is a bit far away for me but if I have to drive 3 hours to get there I will do it!

My advice is to not gt hung up on what your "ideal" weight is.  Get out there and train, even if overweight.  In fact there is a good percentage of people who train on BT who are above their "ideal" weight.

Training will be an aid in helping you to lose weight to hit that ideal number.

I second what Sean said.....Don't worry about weight and BMI, it sometimes BMI is not a good indicator of fitness with ahtletes.  You will discover what your ideal weight is by training, listening to your body and how it feels, it can be different for people of the same height.....If you want to keep track of your progress use your body fat scale, and dont get hang up on the accuracy but on the change that you will see with time, do it once a month and if you keep up your training and healthy eating you will see changes for sure.....

Thanks guys for your info on body fat % and fitness. Good info. Well what does everybody have planned for training this weekend.

For me pretty good weekend: Saturday 5 mile run and a 2000yd. swim, Sunday 25-35 mile bike, kind of depends of the cold front passing through this weekend. But on Saturday PM I go and get fitted on the new tri bike. 2010 BLUE Triad SP looking forward to that.

Let's see what's on your plan.

Shooting for a 1.5-2 hour ride tomorrow and a 6 mile run on Sunday.

Still trying to kick this nagging cold however.  It's been cutting into my workouts the last week and a half.  Walking that fine line between keeping up the volume and not wearing myself down too much so that the cold kicks in full force.

I work every other weekend - so unfortunately this is my weekend to work... which means less workouts (since I work about 14hr days)...

But - I did get in a 35mi bike ride on Wednesday and then a nice 5mi run on Thursday.. I try to get a few good workouts in on all my off days, since it always seems a lot more difficult to do anything on the days I work.

I was hoping to at least get in one workout if I can manage - maybe a swim tomorrow morning or getting on the bike trainer.

Hope you all enjoy the weekend! Just knowing other people are motivated to stay active makes me want to get out there even more...

Weekend training went good....

Ride on saturday went well, new bike is awesome, but medial knee pain is back.
I am not sure if it an overuse issue or not. There is no swelling of the knee.
I Iced it several times over the weekend and today the pain is barely noticable.

Easy run on Sunday. Knee does not hurt during run.

I think I am going to go get pedals and shoes this week, and go through the fitting process again to see if they can spot something.

Any thoughts?

Happy training,
Brian

Hey Sean and Brian good to hear from you. Sean i saw your dad last Thursday he mentioned you had spoke to him. There is a lot of flu going around this area, alot of my swim kids have sick and some parents too. Hope it goes away soon. I'll get a picture of the bike soon. We should get Brian to show us his new ride as well. Maybe we should have our own group version of show me your ride. What do you think.

Brian, hmmmm. I have a little miniscus tenderness from a lot of years of golf. Fortunately isn't doesn't impair the running and riding. And a few times if it does flair up it responds well to ice like yours. So you did the right thing for sure. When you get your pedals and shoes they might be able to see if you have a pedaling imbalance that might be causing your pain. It appears the riding is when the soreness shows itself? I'll go ahead and warn you now, you will fall down fogetting to unclip. It's OK happens to everybody. The first time I did it I was going at least 1mph and fell over right in front of some people on a walk, they just looked at me and kept going. Didn't even bother to ask if I was OK. The old Pride took a hit on that one.

Hi Everyone....

I bailed on my running group Saturday morning... it was just too freaking cold. I got up in the morning and looked at the temp around 7 and it was 19. I ended up running @ the gym... got in 7.25 miles before my legs / knees started hurting and I had to stop. Up until mile 6.5 I was feeling good... had the speed on the treadmill set to 5.8 and I got in a nice groove with my breathing and stride.

Swam on Sunday - got in 2700 yards... held a 1:45 /100yds on my main set(10 X 100's), I was pretty happy with that. Did a 3 mile run this morning and I wasnt ready.... it was too early and I was too tired... I really needed to warm up first. My knees / legs are still hurting a bit I would say a 2 out of 5. I am going to take off running tomorrow and just swim. I am having trouble getting going on the bike. I just bought a new trainer (Cyclops 2 Fluid) - its been sitting in my basement for the past 2 weeks. I plan on clearing out some basment space and get it going this weekend.

I would like to see what everyone's ride looks like. I will get a good pick of mine and post it up here in the next few days.

Wife and I had a great dinner out Saturday night... it was so nice to be out with adults and just relax and eat without worrying about kids.

In my area the Competitor Sprint Triathlon series just opened registration. Man its a scam @ $115 for a sprint, but its my hometown and I think should be a good party. Anyone want to check it out

http://trirock.competitor.com/trirock-annapolis/

Roy.... do you also have an official list of participants in the group ? I do not keep my logs public, but would like to open them up to all members of the group. (if you dont have one, I will spend the time to compile one and post it to the thread)

Hope everyone has a great week.

Ola' hope everyone had a great Monday. Vin, if you go to my log and friends section that is everyone who I've heard from with the exception to my buddy in the Sombraro. You can use that. Probably a good call on the 9degree run doesn't sound like it would have been any fun. How are your legs feeling, have you been able to locate some of the sore areas and begun to get them massaged out. I'll get a pic of the bike and post it, might do the bike porn thing on the main forum. Always wanted to do that.

Good chance for rain later today in Central Fl. might put a halt to the afternoon swim, we'll see.

Vin you got to get that bike on the trainer, clear a spot get a fan and have at it.

Good morning,I had to unfortunately bail on my Monday swim as the stomach bug hit our family. The kids were first, then me on Monday. I feel much better today and now my wife has it. Hope to get on the stationary bike tonight and then the pool on Wednesday.I have the NHL All-Star 5K this Saturday. That should be a lot of fun.

I just did a bunch of running this weekend. Trying to get in my runs before the 1/2 Marathon in Tampa. Probably going to ride with the roadies this weekend, it is about time I got back on my bike since the Holidays, and work on hanging on to the group over the next few weeks.

Still looking to do that swim clinic in Feb, so I will probably be getting back in the water after that, and have drills and form things to work on! Trying to see if I will have the $$$ to go to that, since we are currently dumping all $$ into our house at the moment, when real life surpasses your training right?

Talk to you all this week!

So... I finally decided to get in the pool today! It was my first time since I did my sprint Triathlon in August.  I knew I was going to go today and honestly,  I didn't sleep so well last night (thinking about all the videos I had watched about swimming and the anxiety I had during training the last time).

I went to a new gym - to try it out... It was actually awesome.  The pool I swam in was 4ft for the entire length - which was nice and I felt less fearful because I could stop anywhere in the lap if I was pushing myself too hard and found myself out of breath.  I'm debating joining this gym - but I have a hard time paying $50/mo.. so I guess I have a decision to make.  The other local pools have one shallow end and one deep end - and the showers, etc. are not so sanitary.  Anyway, I got in 50min and was working on breathing, floating, and just getting back the feel of my stroke (although I know this is something that will need improvement). I also found out there will be a Masters swim class starting the 1st of March, so I plan on doing that.

After my swim, which went much better than expected - I ran 3mi on an inside track (although kind of boring, at least I was still able to get in a run, cause the rain is pouring in my neck of the woods).

Hope everyone has had a good start to your week!

The registration for the sprint this spring finally opened and I have registered for my first triathlon.

I had a good run this morning and an excellent swim in the afternoon.

And here is the new ride.

Happy training,

Thanks for the pic Brian, I like. It is going to serve you well. The best incentive in getting going is to do what you have done, register for an event. You now have a definite timeline for your training and a great opportunity to explore a new sport. You are going to have blast. Did you sign up as a novice/first timer or within your agegroup. Not a big deal really its just a category to allow first timers to compete in their own division for that race.

If you liked the Gym and you felt comfortable in there i would recommend to join even if you pay more (if you finances allow it).  When that is the case you are more likely to use it and you look forward to your workouts.

I was in your same situation and was very glad that i actually made the change, even if i ended up paying a little more.

Well, the beginning of this week has been extremely frustrating.  After receiving the all clear 2 weeks ago to start working out (arm injury) I was planning in hitting my workouts full throttle, but little I knew that there would be another curveball.

I had to cancel my scheduled Sunday ride and I haven’t been able to work out since Saturday due to my wisdom teeth.  They started to hurt like hell all of the sudden and my dentist cannot do anything about it until next week.

Find myself wondering what’s next, and if I will be able to have more than 2 workouts in a row without something going wrong.

Vent over…………….

Hope you guys are having a good week….

I'm sure I will have a bit of bike envy when everyone starts posting pics of their rides, but I sure enjoy this bike especially coming off the Mountain Bike.

I signed up as an agegrouper for this one.  My "A" race is an Oly in June (registration has not been opened yet), which is what my training plan is focused on.  As this sprint draws closer should I change up my training in prepartion for this race or keep focused on the Olymipic?

...........

Training: nice easy trainer ride this morning keeping cadence and resistance low to keep from further irritating the problem child (left knee) and core work.

My first event ever was done on a $200.00 bike, so don't worry about what you are riding. You have a quality bike and can certainly be competitive. But you will see some nice bikes when you go to your first event. This is my 4th bike, the last two are tri bikes and I have a road bike. I wouldn't change what you are doing since your "A" race is in June, use this as a training day. How many weeks in front of your Oly is this. If it's an April - May race no problem. No recovery issues and it will be a good practice run for going forward. I jinxed myself the other day when we were discussing your knee. I ran Monday afternoon, and my right knee has been sore since. Iced last night and it feels better, not sure why it decided to flare up.

Yuset sorry to hear your training is getting off to a slow start, get those teeth taken care of and you'll be good to go. I agree with you on the Gym, go where your comfortable and you feel like you can accomplish what you need to on any given day.

Lindsay glad that your workout went well, get in the water as much as you can so your comfort level will increase. The Masters program that you mentioned, do you know how competitive of a group they have. By competitive I mean former swimmers still competiting, or is it mostly fitness swimming and hopefully some triathletes. You might check on that and see if they have a tri group that uses a different workout that is geared more towards what we do.

Good Morning, I hope everyone has/is having a productive week of activities both work and play. My knee area is feeling much better. Still not sure what happened, and it wasn't so much the knee but the connective tissue on the inside of the knee was rubbing on the bone which made is very painfull for a couple of days. Still one good sore spot, but I've about got that worked out. This one's a first. I've got a pretty normal weekend of training planned, Saturday swim/run then on Sunday bike. The weather looks like its going to be pretty good. Looking forward to it.
