Wow, look at all our new members!  So cool!!  Welcome to everyone!

(I suck at names, so I think I need to make a cheat sheet for myself)

I'm a tad annoyed today because the only time I could get on a piece of equipment at work was during my lunch hour which meant that I missed my opportunity to run outside in daylight.  Grrr.  I'm trying to arrange my schedule to get out a little early today so that I can run directly after work.  That should give me about 15 - 20 min before it gets totally dark.  I even happen to have my light gear with me today.

I just don't think I can face another dreadmill run this week!

Hey gang....
for those who really are jumping in and not knowing Dud or I much.....we spend a lot of time hitting the inspires daily looking at your logs and commenting on workouts....this is a request for ya'll to try and keep them updated as much as possible cause when ya'll ask questions related to training it helps for us to look at those.  (yes.....I live in central VA so I have that southern ya'll thing going on even though AI am what the locals refer to as a d@mn Yankee cause I grew up in Albany, NY)

We are still open for a few more people so if any of your friends want to join in that's good!

Catherune, I hear your frustration on the lack of daylight......it makes training a lot easier.

WOW, so many new faces, welcome!

Re: the treadmill incline: I use 1%. Unless I want to practice hills, then it could potentially be  a lot more, but for normal, "flat" conditions, 1% it is.

I've noticed there's sometimes sun (it's setting, but it's still sun, dammit!) when I leave work at night - woo hoo! Spring is coming!

800 yards in the pool this morning and a mile (yes, just one) on the treadmill right after. My quads are crazy sore from lunges / squats / step-ups yesterday. The fronts of my legs feel like a giant bruise!

I'll be heading out your way for IM austrailia so I may need a place to sleep afterwards....just kidding.  But I'll bug you for things to do as the family and I will be visiting Sydney after the race.

--Chris

Sure, there is a nice little bed in between my 5 year old and 6 week year old, I am sure you will sleep soundly LOL. When is the race on, certainly bug me away, have you been here before?

Thanks all for the kind words about my story. It seems everyone is keen and on quite different paths, so look forward to drawing some inspiration from you all.

In terms of the question about the treadmill, a 1% incline is supposed to compensate for the fact there is no air resistance when running on a treadmill, so 1% is what I use as well, although I have to say there is nothing more refreshing than getting out for a run in bad weather, so I rarely use a treadmill (of course running in the dark, probably not such a good idea in some places).

I will be starting my training on Saturday, and was wondering if it was best to follow a couch to sprint or a couch to olympic program considering I am starting from scratch again. I hope everyone is well :)

Adam, What is your "A" race focus?  Seems most Oly programs are 12-16 weeks and you are already in summer mode (I  will need occasional reminders that you are on an opposite seasonal pattern from most of us) .  If your A race is the Oly I would focus on that one and do the sprint as a train through race with only a mini taper.  Will you have time for a decent Oly build of that length?

Nice to meet the new group members. It looks like a solid group.

I'm enjoying some really nice weather out here on the left coast. 75 degrees allowed for a ride and short run on the beach. I can't complain. Sending some warm weather love to those of you back east.

I need some motivation to get in the pool more. I'm not swimming with a Masters group this winter/spring because of school. Anyone want to come drag me out of bed at 5 twice a week and drill me at the pool?

Well, Jessie....I have no swim motivation these days......just getting myself out of bed to the pool is a monumental effort.  If I text you when I get up to swim you'll curse me cause it will be so much earlier for you anyway!

Nice roller video. This is the first time I watched it. Now I want a set.

I would agree that BT offers a lot of good info for all triathletes.

Thanks for co leading our group.

Judi: If you text me at 5am your time I can pull off a swim, bike and run every morning (being that it would be 2am here) and my husband may divorce me (his comment not mine).

You know you bring up a good point, because, just like 6 years ago, I have started late in the local season, with most races finishing by late March/early April. I guess I have two options:

  • Try to squeeze in a program that would have me ready for an Olympic race May 7 (15 weeks away): http://www.byronbaytri.com/index.html
  • Go for a slow training routine, perhaps do an Adventure race or two and some run events until next season.

Having never done an Olympic, I don't know if 15 weeks is a timeframe that is advisable. I am a generally athletic guy, having played national sport all through my youth, but still I have been out of action for a while. The counter argument is motivation I guess, whether having something mid year will keep the motivation up.

You brought up another point about tapering, would love to hear some thoughts on the best way to taper for races as it is not something I have done before.

Adam,
With not having a lot of training on board at this time my gut instinct would be to do the sprint focus this season, building a base and going conservative.

Tapering is cutting back your workouts in the days prior to a race.   The longer the planned race the longer the taper should be.  It is shortened workouts but intensity for race prep.  Most of us hate tapering and get downright grumpy during a taper!!

Yes, Dud....I am suggesting a conservative approach!  Don't die of shock here!!

As to the rollers....Dud spoke so highly of them last year I got some.  I took a few good wipe outs on them and now since the gastrocs thing am afraid to get on them and injure something else!  I'm shooting for a release from my PT, not a permanent appointment spot!!

When I started swimming a few years ago, I was happy to be able to swim a continuous lap.  Hang in there... I swam 1 1/2 miles yesterday!

If shoveling, falling on your backside, and being covered in snow were the events, I'd be world champ today

Tried for an outdoor run but with the plows it's just damn dangerous

So back to the treadmill again.

Signed myself up for a swim appraisal/lesson at my local Y. Hopefully I can pick up something there

I actually ran outside today.  Did 4.15 miles at lunch and even though it was raining, it was awesome.  Sooo much better than inside!!  I had planned on swimming tonight as well, but I forgot that we committed to 'game night' at a friend's house after work.  I'll make up the session this weekend instead.

For those who swim in the morning, how do you deal with the sloshing in the ears all day long?  Or do you not have that problem?  I only swim at night so that my ears can drain while I sleep.

Catherine,
I have never had a problem with water in my ears....wear a cap.  Tilt your head to one side to drain ....Carry some Q tips in the gym bag if needed.  I work on a phone unit and am on the phone all day without any issues.

Yeah, I think it's just my ears.  I spent my childhood battling swimmers ear and I always get it after OWS sessions, even now.

I do wear a cap.  I've also tried ear plugs (they are all too big or they hurt).  I think I have tiny ear openings!  It's really annoying.  My husband is frequently embarssed by my hopping-on-one-foot-while-banging-the-side-of-my-sideways-head antics as I try and get the water out.  No dice.  Extended periods with my head on a pillow is the only thing that works.

Luckily, evening swims fit my schedule best anyway.

I'm with you on the outdoor run. I'd rather run outside over the treadmill, rain, sleet or snow (well, more like rain ... it doesn't sleet of snow here).

I used to have problem with water in my ears. I tried some of the ear drops that were available but found that tilting my head eventually drained them. Sometimes I feel like I'm still underwater.

Scheduled day off today.  Forces me to grade some papers, do report cards, and write my next paper for school.

I'd rather be training!

You are of course right, and so I will do as I am told conservative it is.

My challenge now is how to best build that base knowing that my local season is probably a minimum of 6 months away. Considering the time I have, I am thinking a sprint program is a waste of time, and although I would like to mix in some other events, such as runs, adventure races until the season starts up again, what would be the best way to build up to an Olympic distance event in the last quarter of the year?

Is there a BT program you would recommend (I am currently Bronze, is it worth going Silver or Gold, are the extra programs worth it?)?

Adam,

I just looked over the bronze level plans, there are some good ones.  Some going 20-22 weeks.  Do you have an area of weakness you need to work more than the others?

I saw one plan was a bike focus, but if you are good on the bike you may want to consider a balanced program.

The "Couch to" programs for running would be good if you are thinking about some stand alone run races.

I never see a swim focus program, but if you think you need swim technique work it would be good to get into a Master's type class to have your stroke assessed.  Remember, the term Masters swim refers to age, not ability.

I am in the process of rebuilding base after my long rehab from the injury.  Start low volume and intensity.  .Build the run with about 10% increase in volume at most every week, dropping back about every 4th or 5th week just a bit.  It's a time to learn to listen to what your body is saying about exercise and address the issues.
