I know the elevation of St. George isn't very high but you are climbing to almost 4,700 ft.  I can't find anything even close to 1,000 ft where I live.

I am curious about the 4700 also.  I know to have the benefits of altitude training you have to be > than 5000ft during the entire training.  I know traveling/riding in the mountains of North georgia elevations of 3200-3600 will not have an effect on me. I live at 100 ft elevation here off the coast.  I think the effects at <5000 feet for short times will be minimal.  The heat and the climbs will be more the issue.

I live at sea level as well and am pretty sensitive to altitude, but I didn't find the elevation of St. George to be an issue.  Yes, the heat and the climbs are the main issue.

I am the opposite. It takes me a ggod 3-4 days to acclimate. I have severe asthma, but got a total med over haul post SG this year, so hope that helps take that acclimation time down. Last year I got a mile into a bike session 6 days prior to race day and that was enough to slap me down. Ditto running and swimming. By thursday I was fine. We'll see.

I also did not find the altitude to be a problem.  Climbs and heat, yes! Altitude, no.

Little Cat, that's interesting.  I have asthma as well.  elevation like at Tahoe or Donner really gets to me, but not so much at SG.

Flatlanders unite.  My 40 mile loop I use as a training ride has 1,500 feet max per loop.  I found CdA to be not much different than my training loop, despite the extra 1,000 ft of gain per 56 miles.  This course has even more gain, but I won't be braking at the bottom of each hill like we did in CdA so I call it a wash.  Oh, and I'm bringing my disc for IMSG.

Tore ligaments in my ankle on a night run 3 weeks ago.  Feel very lucky to have met all the therapist goals already and released to start running.  Was very scared the week after the injury.  Blood pooling in a foot can never be a good thing.  Hopefully will be full strength to hit the goofy challenge at disney this January.  Well wishes to you all.

I was supposed to race IMFL in November but I might have a stress fracture. I will know Thursday (Bone scan). If it is, I am looking for another race.  I am think St. George.  It seems like a great place for a race.  Its going to be hard for me to train since I live in Maine.  I might only have 2 months of riding outside.

I just signed up for the IM STG.  This will be my first Ironman ever, and only my 6th triathlon ever.  Any tips or suggestions (other than not to do it!) would be greatly appriciated!! I'm a good athlete that is about 15lbs. over my ideal race weight, but I feel very good about this upcoming year! Good luck to everyone else out there preparing for this race!

That would be pretty cool and makes some sense, the course would suit him.

That would pretty much guarantee a sellout.

I just found out today that I got a slot for Escape from Alcratraz.  It's 5 weeks after IMSG.  Going to be a fun 2012.

Chicago Marathon this weekend.  Miami 70.3 left to finish out this year.  Then, start focusing on IMSG.

ride lots of hills.  losing weight will help a bit.  prepare for hot...or cold!  you picked a tough one for a first, but that makes the finish all the sweeter.

Hey KStater, come and stay at my house in St. George. I have a fully furnished, unoccupied basement that is almost big enough to be a State Park. You could have your choice of 3 bedrooms. Better than camping and I'd be happy to ride and run the course with you. I'm out training on it every weekend.

Email me if you are interested.

Just chiming in here... I did IMLP last year and loved it. I had my sights set on IM Louisville or Beach to Battleship, but St George is calling my name... I like the idea of the extreme challenge, the fact that it's so early in the season, and the fact that it didn't reach capacity last year (not something I could count on again, I know). Just waiting to pull the trigger!!!

I did the Xterra with him in Ogden. I think it doubled the attention.

He was here in Tempe AZ racing a local off road tri, which he won easily. I hope the WTC grants him a pro liscence if he decides to race IMSG next year as he is racing pro in XTERRA. I mean, the dude is in my AG...
