CraigS - 2012-01-13 4:05 PM I'm curious to see the Garmin Vector system when it comes out this Spring (a power system in the pedals) rather than having to build up a wheel.

Big decisions coming your way then. I haven't heard anything really about it... I would think the new technology is going to be $$$$

Your probably right about the $$$.  But perhpas the new technology will push down the price of the existing power meters ont he market.  We shall see.  Biking sure is expensive.

Hello, my name is Daniel.  I stumbled into this website and found this thread.  May be serendipity but I am curious and hopeful that there is room for me.

I am 52, took a career change 7 years ago and now teach 7th grade lit/la.  Am really happy with my career.  I am married (27 years) and have two sons (24 & 20).

I have run 9 marathons and completed two sprint tris years ago.  I am motivated.  My weight is 242.  I will write more when I find there is an opportunity to join the group.

One would hope but I would have thought that about the power tap especially the price with a crank based solution. Anyway you could always get a wired power tap.

Subject: Spin Class
There is snow on the ground- alas I can not train on my bike. Instead I hit the spin classes. Is there anything I can do to make spin classes more effective in helping with cycling training?

It depends on what type of bikes they have and what type of bike you ride outside. For me riding a TT bike it's nearly impossible to get in the same position with the bikes at my gym. The Cyclops ones are supposed to be closer. Basically just get in the cardio and leg workout. If you have a heart rate monitor train in your zones.

Where does everybody live in our group? We left that off in our bios....I see everybody talking about snow and bad weather for training..I gues I take for granted living in the south where we get to train 365 days a year. I live in east Texas, where we panic if it drops below freezing for a day or too..I feel for YA'LL..

Well thats a great stroke rate. What's the furthest you've swam? Biking is great it's also a double ended sword. Are you traing with a heart rate monitor? Staying in your lower zones not only will you'll be able to go long your body uses far as fuel ans we all have abundance of that and that will make you lose the weight. Remember that 3500 calories is one pound of body fat so cut your calorie intake by 500 calories a day and you should be able to lose one pound a week. Beginner triathlon has great plans to follow for your first triathlon.

Hi!  Mind if I join you?  Looks like you must be somewhere near me and several of the posts I've seen reference Pumpkinman, which is on my to-do list as well

Name:  peregrinesgirl (Lisa)

Story:  I've always loved swimming, biking was fine and running just plain sucked.  I played some sports in high school, less in college and none after that.  I did RAGBRAI in high school with my dad.  But my youngest sister did IMFL in 2010 and my whole family went down to watch and scream.  And we did.  And I got bit by the Ironbug.  Those utterly insane people made it look possible.  I wanted it.  I looked at Be Iron Fit (my youngest sister's "bible") and decided it was indeed possible for me.  My husband agreed.  So I started running, using the heart rate zone method and discovered that it actually wasn't half bad--in fact, I rather enjoyed it!  Got a membership to a gym and a pool and started riding and swimming too.  Two months later, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer after having half my thyroid out.  It took a while to get back up to speed.  And then my husband was accepted to a school in OR, but I needed to keep my job and my health insurance, so now we're living bi-coastally.  It's rotten.  I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.  In short, last year was one hell of a ride.  But I ran three 5ks, did the Rye-by-the-Sea duathlon, the Granite State Wheelmen Century Ride, and the Mount Desert Island Marathon in 2011.  I also registered for the Pumpkinman 2012 and IMFL 2012.  My older sister gave me her bike on "long term loan"; my youngest sister bought me an indoor trainer for Christmas and my next youngest sister made me a good luck necklace to wear at races, so I'm lucky.

Family Status:  Married (though living very far apart 9 months out of the year), no kids.

Current Training:  On my own just trying to get faster right now by doing speedwork and intervals until I start on the Be Iron Fit plan in April.

2011 Races:  Rye-By-The-Sea Duathlon, Mount Desert Island Marathon.

2012 Planned Races:  Greenfield Triathlon (MA), Pumpkinman 70.3 (ME) and the Panama City Beach Ironman (IMFL).

Weight loss:  This has been an issue for me for a significant chunk of my life.  But about six years ago now, I lost 50 pounds and have kept it off, though Christmas took its toll   I'd like to drop about 8 more pounds so I can start the official program in April at 150.

It was 7 degree at the time I'd normally run so I wait 3 hours until it was a blazing 15. There was no wind so it actually wasn't bad at all. Two mile warmup at 10:50 pace as I just felt tight with the cold and it took a long time to normalize my heart rate. Then 5 mile tempo run at 8:34 pace.

I would like to join the group

I would like to join your group. My info is a follows:

Name: Darin Smith

Story: I am 35 yo physician assistant. Have never done a tri before. Was interested a few years back when I first found this site but was concerned about my lack of love for running and eventually lost interest. Over the last year I started running with a friend and recently ran a HM with him. That coupled with the needed swim training for me to complete my PADI Divemaster course I wondered back over to BT. Now I have the bug again and I am far from scared of the run. Running is now a passion and the swim has me concerned.

Family Status: Married with 1

Current Training: Running every other day about 5 miles or more up to 8 miles, no other training yet except for my nasty swim effort today.

Planned 2012 Races: Still looking

Welcome aboard Darin. Well the swim shouldn't scare you as I am sure you'd be great at it. I also scuba dive, so if you can do that then you can do anything...  You haven't said anything about biking? Biking is a double ended sword and will help with your aerobic capacity as well. If you have the time, I'd suggest getting some time in the saddle as well. Where are you from?
