Ok kids, I am about ready to sign up for something now that ZIPP1 has started the train moving....I could do Danskin in July which is female and newbie friendly, but is a 1/2 mile swim or I could do High Cliff in June which is full of a lot of serious triathletes and it is early in the season so no/limited OWS practice, but only a 1/4 mile swim and I could touch the bottom if I really freaked out....remember today, swimming is my worst sport.  Both require an overnight stay.

What shoudl I consider? what would you do if you were me?

You will be ready for both.  Pick the one that most excites you; what gets you most jazzed.  Check race reports and better yet talk to people who have done the races.  Remember we do this for fun.

If I had to pick one (and I was female) I'd do that Danskin.  For one, I think completing the 1/2mi OWS would be really cool for you (a challenge that I know you'll be able to do).  Also, the all female/newbie friendly factor seems like a big positive.

i think the half mile swim will be fine too. i remember when i first picked up swimming again about a year ago after a very long lapse, 100's were pretty challenging for the first few months. then 200's were challenging for a few months. once i got comfy with the 200, though, it was less than a month till I was doing 400's and feeling like i could easily keep going...

once you can do those short distances comfortably, i'll bet you'll feel like you can pretty much swim as far as you want to. you may have to do the last few hundreds really slowly, but you'll find you can finish, no problem.

zipp1 - 2007-12-16 9:59 PM I signed up for my first tri of the season!  June 29.  It's 820 m OWS, 18.8 mile bike with a 5K run.  My plan is to do this one and an OLY in late July on the OLY training plan from March through May but roll into the HIM plan early May since I still plan on the HIM in early Sept.  I also want to throw in a 10K  early April with a half mary a couple weeks later.  Is this too much? Only other big run race would be the full mary in November which shouldn't be too hard to build post HIM from.  And yes, I'm looking to join a masters swim group to throw in some swim meets
WHOO WHOO! Which one did you sign up for???
Kristen,

I signed up for I Love the Tavern--Richmond Mulisports has their race calendar up and opened registration on all their races over the weekend.

I did a womens only race last September.  It was a blast. I had the most fun at that race of all my tris last season.  JUst get a lot of OWS practice time in as soon as the weather is cooperative cuse that's a whole different animal from a pool swim

Brian,

I appreciate your feedback on the season's plan.  I guess my big question is what can I do to fit in my training hours if I get the new job...Hmm 9-5 is the routine, I'll be up at the crack of stupid daily to do SOMETHING at the gym which is fine for the morning but the HIM plan calls for 2x/day 3 or 4 days a week. I won't get to the core class much cause of the work schedule...but I won't be stressed out from a day off my suckometer rating chart.  Not even sure about fitting in HIM training with my current job but that's something I have to work on.

Last week you put in 11 hours.  The most volume I did for HIM training was 10 hours.  You may have to shift that volume from weights and swimming to biking and running for a couple of months.  Note, I think it's good to keep strength rest of the year for people (like me) who are 35+ for bone density, maintain muscle, posture, etc.

Take a look at what my 2007 looked like. Notice that from May-July, I basically stopped strength training in order to fit in the required swim/bike/run into my full schedule (8-6ish plus 50 min commute each way).  The other thing is that you will have longer days.  I recall that my 70-mile ride started at 4:00pm (left early) from my office parking lot.  It didn't get dark until 9:00pm.

I can send an Excel version of this plan and my 2008 if you want, just PM me the e-mail address.

Thanks, Brian.

I PM'd the email to you.  That looks like a tough plan...wow!  Hmm, giving up weight training?  Maybe I could cut them out for a season but I'm not a milk drinker so I need the weights to work with the cheese/yogurt and other weight bearing stuff (like running) to keep the bone density up

I agree and don't suggest giving them up for a whole season.  It's just as the biking hours mount, I had trouble fitting it in.  Plus it's more fun to be outside, enjoying the nice weather.  I will probably not lift again for a big chunk of the summer.  I do understand the importance of weight-bearing excercise for women (and men, although to a lesser degree) as it relates to the aging process...

I'll send the plan (my own Excel creation) when I get to my home computer tonight.

I'm getting my work schedule figured out...seems like I have July definitely open for a tri. Soooo I'm looking at one of these.  Thoughts on any of these?  I'm kind of looking at ones with shorter swims because I'm still learning to swim.  Anyway..here are the ones I'm looking at...any feedback would be much appreciated!  And I will know Jan 10th for SURE when I will be on travel...so the 2nd question...should I just wait until then...or is that to late to find a tri?

http://www.setupevents.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=event_detail&eventID=937 (perks: inexpensive and not too far)

http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?CHECKSSO=1&RESET=0&EVENT_ID=1498719 (not much info up yet...kind of weary because of that)

And I think I will definitely do an indoor tri in feb or march to get an idea of where I am, mainly in terms of swim.  I have never swam competitively before...so I wanna get one under my belt.  Probably this one: http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?EVENT_ID=1495596&RESET=0...

arrrrrrrrghhhh. my brand-spankin-new forerunner 50 doesn't seem to work underwater. it says it's water resistant to 30 meters, and the watch part works fine underwater, but it won't pick up my pulse! the heart rate monitor worked fine both before and after the swim, but during it refused to register. any ideas??

Are you sure you aren't losing a connection with your HRM strap when swimming?  I know people at my pool get very frustrated because it doesn't keep good contact to the body due to the movement and the water.  Does it give no reading or a weird reading?

no reading. and i think you're right, that is the problem... but i don't know how to fix it! i did try to fiddle with it in the pool to see if it was just positioned funny, but no luck. do you think that electrode gel stuff they sell would help? the other thing i thought of was to put it on backwards, so the sensor is on my back. then it wouldn't be as deep in the water, at least... hm.

I've never tried it in a pool.  Just take your pulse (15sec X 4) after sets to see gauge intensity.  I can tell you that under a tri-top and wet suit I had good contact with my chest, providing a reading during my OWS triathlons.  The high ion concentration (Cl-) due to chlorination also may cause severe interference in the pool.

You can try putting backwards although I think it is shaped to fit better on your chest.  If you don't mind looking a little weird you could put a sports bra under your swimming suit to see if that holds it in place.  If it works you at least know it is the connection.  I cannot imagine that the gel would hold in water, but maybe give it a try.  You might also want to post it in the forum talk.  I am sure there are athletes that have figured out a way around the problem.  I remember a thread a while ago about this question for guys and running.  People used all sorts of things -- even duct tape!

(edited - I tried to include Kimmitri's message, but the quote thing was screwed up...so anyway - this is for her).

I did an indoor tri for my first (er, first 3 tris) and it was great...I am not was not a comfortable swimmer, so I felt very comfortable that I could stop at the end of the pool, touch, etc. The first one I did was in March - the pool was indoors, the rest outdoors, so it gave me a good sense of tris.

I echo Judi - setup events ROCKS...I've been impressed with their organization - they put on a good race and are good to people who are new. Sounds like the ones you picked are all good ones to try - go with what fits your schedule & you'll do great!

Kristen - Thanks for that! The swimming thing..that's def why I am looking at pool swims for the first tris I do. I like the idea of a lifeguard being able to see me and knowing that the wall is there. I was browsing around another thread and saw some good things about setup events..so maybe I'll just do that one. It looks like it's the better option. And I do get to kind of travel out of town, LOL. I probably would go down the night before, just because I don't want to have to get up at the crack of dawn to drive down there...I'd rather be there and relaxed. Okay..I think I've made a decision!

Oh, and I'm creating a monster. I convinced my friend to sign up for the Cherry blossom 5K...now she wants ME to do a St. Patty's day one with her the month before, LOL. Two weeks between 5Ks is okay right? It would make my schedule next year look like this:

Feb 23rd - indoor tri (not distance, but time based)

mar 16th - 5K

april 6th - 5K

july 20th - sprint tri

fall/winter - maybe a longer running race?

with my travel schedule right now up in the air...i haven't really planned out aug-dec.  but thoughts?  suggestions?

Kim,

Your schedule looks good.  Richmond has an 8K the same day as the marathon that's pretty easy-some minor hills but you end on a downhill The Richmond Multisports sign ups are open if you want to hike down for the June 1 HHH Powersprint (300 m pool swim, 20 K bike, 5 K run) That was my first last year--I think Kristen did it too.  web site is www. richmondmultisports.com it you want to consider it. The bike has rolling hills but is considered "fast and flat" by most riders, run has 2 decent hills to deal with. I remember talking myself up the second hill on that run-all excited to be at the turn around only to run into the wind and rain ( oh baby, it poured that day) Though I sure understand wanting to be closer to home for a race.  I traveled for 2 of my 3 races last season (one to Ithaca, NY and the other in Williamsburg)

Yeah, I did Powersprint (and probably will again this year - and yes, the rain sucked)...the Y it is at is across the street from my house, so I can hardly turn it down - and the ride and run are on my training grounds! The rolling hills aren't bad, but it's not "flat" as described. The uphill run at the turn-around and the end kind of stink, but what can you do. It won't fill up until closer to June, so you can think about it. I think I signed up in April last year...after I did my first one in March - I wanted to do one and then make a decision on any other ones.

I traveled for race 1 (1.5 hours the morning of), was at home for race 2 & 3 (across the street, no less), and then did race 4 in conjunction with living in ATL for the semester, so I guess it counts as a home race.

I'm hoping in a couple years to do Steelhead 70.3 in MI, which is close to my inlaws, or the Great Illini Half (or full, heaven help me), which is close to my family...but would require travel for me. I'd love to do a big tri with a major family contingent on the course...

OK, so I pulled a training plan for my 1/2 mary...my concern is this - I'm ~ 12 weeks out and the long runs are dropping to 4 miles...egad, I run 4 often on my mid-week runs. Do I have to drop back that far?

(I know, what's the sense of a plan if you're not going to follow it...but you already know I have volume issues.)

I'll keep that Richmond Powersprint in mind.  I don't mind traveling down to Richmond for a race, I really like that area to visit and I'd probably make a long weekend out of it or something.  And the distances sound pretty good to me.  8K....when is that?  If it's later in the year...like fall or winter maybe I can do it.  I think I'll be able to hang that far in a race by then, especially if there are flexible or no cut offs.

I met with a trainer yesterday and boy oh boy, I feel it this morning!  We did lower body and it feels like he hit some spots that I definitely was forgetting about.  I bought a few more sessions, I want to work them in so I can get stronger.  The trainer is actually a triathlete, so it's like hiring a coach, because he said that I can use our training time to work on transitions or when I get my bike, to do rides outside and bricks and stuff.  So right now, I'm going for general fitness, but closer to the first race, I definitely will be getting some transition help from him.
