furiousferret - 2010-05-04 2:04 PM I think the bike is what killed me, if I had more long days in me I would have gotten to the t2 fresher, probably eaten better and wouldn't have cramped up.   I definately feel for the AG'er just trying to cross the line the bike is the most important now.  I used to think it was the run, but at IMSG at least half the field blew up on the bike and walked the mary portion.
___________________________________________________________________________

I feel somewhat lost right now, I have alot of work to do on my swim and bike but I don't want to neglect the run either.  I need to improve on things and feel like I'm still training for the IM.  I know the swim needs work, that's priority one.  Next is the bike.

I would like to do 10,000 yds a week swimming, 25 mpw running, and 100 mpw on the bike, but that adds up to about 15 hours a week for me and just seems too drastic for what is essentiallly a maintenance schedule.  I think more realistic is 6,000/15/100 which is still around 10; I just don't know if that's too much though.  I'm also debating just shelving the run alltogether and focus on the swim and bike.

I'm also planning on doing a century a month, at least until daylight savings ends.

That's some great insight.  You're reinforcing my plan of attack towards IM training.  I focused on my running all winter to get a solid foundation there and will then be switching my focus to the bike during the 6 months leading up to my IM.  But I think I need to get a little more focused on the swim during that period too... I'm hoping being able to get some OWS in will help motivate me to do that, I like swimming the 3rd most because it is more anti-social than the other two... you can still talk while you bike and run, but you'll swallow too much water if you do that during the swim ;-)

PennState - 2010-05-04 4:54 PM Ironman training cannot really be generalized to a one plan fits all imho. Sara you just need to ride more, you will get more confidence as you puts more t.I.t.s. in. Having said that that I think as a general rule that people should be swimming 3 times a week with a minimum of 2 times per week in your off season phase. Bike mileage can be built up more safely than run mileage so maintaining the run in off season makes sense. If you are not swimming now and don't have a huge swim background (ie; former collegiate swimmer), this is not a good thing at all. Again, swim 2-3 times per week. Swimming is very technique dependent and simply cannot be neglected. I guarantee Ironman will humble anyone if they don't swim and bike enough. Running is very important but is the last event and if you are already ruined from poor swim or bike training, it simply won't matter how good a runner you are.

I agree with the swimming 2-3 times a week thing.

I really really have to learn to swim better.  I'm looking for a coach but its hard to find a good tri swim coach around these parts.

Obviously you are aimed at something much bigger than a 15k and you trained through this race (even setting a new PR, which is awesome).

I definitely got a new perspective on what my body "could" handle when I was in my last two years of college swimming.  The coach just basically tried to beat us down to show us that our mind wants to give up before our body does, so that's a prime example of me trying to test that old theory. =)

Nice job pointing out the BIG difference between just a run and a triathlon!  They are two different beasts. ROAR!!!! Cool

What's everyone's week looking like?

This week is hooding/graduation for me.  I had contemplated skipping the hooding so that I could get in a longer ride on Saturday, but the forecast is saying rain.  We'll see what happens between now and then!

PennState - 2010-05-04 4:59 PM Run and ride for me today. Planning a really long ride for Friday. What's everyone's week looking like?

Rest, rest and more rest for me. This is an unstructured week for me before my Vineman training program starts up on Saturday. Nice to have a little lull between racing and ramping back up again to get some energy back.

Finally took the bike out for the first outdoor ride of the year.  Man, do I suck on the bike!  I just did a short 10k ride, because I had to get home and get ready for work, and it was a struggle to stay right around 23km/hr.  I want to get over 30km/hr this year (my last 2 tris and 1 du were all around 26km/hr).  I know that I didn't put nearly enough time in the saddle during those seasons, so I'm going to make sure to step it up with some long rides this year (I don't think I've ever gone over 40km).

I have what I beleive will be a very hilly 10K Saturday! It is a run through the vineyards and the service roads around the vineyard.   Should be a good time!

Thanks for the well wishes.  Right now I'm having "taper madness" even though I'm not really tapering.  Getting obsessed with pacing strategies, how conservative I will be, whether I'll aim for a solid performance with 95% certainty or a really stellar performance with 75% certainty and 25% chance of a blowup, finding the line between giving everything on the course for a B race vs. compromising training for my A race (lake placid) with the extra recovery that would be needed, etc.

This will be my first race ever not racing as a clydesdale (I'm at 187 this morning) -- I need to remember that that, in itself, is a success.  I'm also virtually guaranteed to PR, even if I blow up by pushing too hard... so I should be thankful for that too.  But dammit I just won't be thrilled unless I break 5 hours.

This race is a USAT half distance championship qualifier.  I qualify with a 5:05 or better, or second in my AG or better.  Based on last year's race results, I've got no chance of the latter.  Based on my training times, I have a small chance at the former.

So, last night I bumped into a gal in our tri club that's doing IMLP, too.  I said that I was on the last week of my current training plan.  Well, SHE has been following the intermediate BT plan and really, really likes it. Cool!!

I went to the intermediate program info and printed out the calendar.  It seems to me the big difference is that there's more swimming with the intermediate plan??

Either way, this was really good for me to see.  The beginner/intermediate are very similar so even if I cycle through the last few weeks of my beginner plan until I taper I should be fine!

I printed off the intermediate calendar and started highlighted the big swim/bike/run for the week.  SO, I'll make sure I get those bad boys in and then try to come up with a plan for the other workouts based on how I'm feeling (using the beginner & intermediate plans as a guide).

I feel sooooooo much better about the BT plan!  I'm one of those people that has to touch the wall when there's a wet paint sign, so having someone I know doing the same race with a BT plan is like touching the wet wall, I feel much better about it!  wooohooooeeeeee

PennState - 2010-05-05 6:05 AM Josh, the run is your strength, make sure you leave enough in the tank to allow a strong run. When in doubt, go a little slower on the bike as you can make up a lot on the run!

Good advice here, and good luck Josh!  Looking forward to the race reports.

Grats on Graduating Sara and Jason;  I just got my bachelor's in business last year after going part time for 9 years.  My wife might want to read your thesis since she falls into that category!

COngrats Jason and Sara! Thats awesosme.

Josh, best of luck. I had those very same thoughts about pushing hard in my B race. I went in to it thinking i would "lay up". However, i did not do that after i got off the bike because i felt so good i wanted to go for it. For ME, i think the extra recovery time that i will need was worth pushing it and walking the line between blowing up and redlining because i have a greater sense of confidence now...and a greater understanding of how my training has led me to improve. I think this confidence and greater understanding of my bodies abilities will help me more in LP than the extra couple of days of training i would have had if i took it "easy". Either way best of luck and i look forward to hearing how it goes!

Awesome analogy. I am really happy you found a plan you have confidence in bc u seemed really uncertain about what to do. Let me know how you like this plan...i am following the beginner BT plan...but maybe next time (if there is a next time) i would try the intermed plan
