cathyd - 2012-03-24 12:57 AM Thought I would check in with the group. March has been another dismal training month although I did get out for a bike ride this week and have run the past two nights after work. They are calling for rain here saturday and I work nights both Sat and Sun so may not get much more done until monday. I miss swimming (my gym closed, they went bankrupt, 47 million dollars in debt). We are starting at a gym that gives a discount through my work, but membership starts April 1st and it doesn't have a pool. I may just forget about tris for this year, concentrate on running and just general fitness and a healthy life. I do still follow all the thread updates and most of the rest of the group looks to be doing great.

Thanks for checking in Cathy and I'm sorry to hear that you've had a tough month of training!  It sucks when you aren't able to stick to your routine.

I love your goal of concentrating in a healhy life.  If you get to the end of April and realize that you aren't happy with your new gym and miss the sport of triathalon - than consider making some changes.

And keep checking in - we'll be there to support you!

I went to the local running store and probably way overpaid for a pair of shoes.  I got a new shiny pair of Ascics for $119.  I usually get the bottom of the line Ascics on sale at the general sports store for $49.  I had a little over 500 miles on my pair I was running in.  The new ones seem to have a thicker heal, and the salesman was confident they would help the issue with my foot.  That's an endorsement I could never get at the other store, I don't think it was worth $60 difference, but we'll see if it helps.

I have been icing it at nights, taking Ibuprofen throughout the day, and way lessened my running this week.  I have also been rubbing it out on the claw foot of the kitchen table (that's the closest to a golf ball I could find.)  After I rub it for about 5 min. or so, it seems to feel much better for quite a while.  I think I caught it early enough that I can maintain it through marathon in May, then rest it while I go to the bike specific training for HIM in August.

I had planned a 13.6 mile sprint to see how fast I could go, which would be down from the 18.1 miler I did last week.  This week, I have cut about 20% distance at least off of my runs.  I think I'll shorten the 13.6 to a 4.6 or something, just to get out.  I have a huge assignement for graduate school due on Tuesday, I could use the extra time/peice of mind to get it done.  Next week, I think I'll ease back into it, and look forward to a 19 miler next weekend.  I have to keep building if I want to hit 3:30 for my race time.  Come "heel" or high water.  3:30 or BUST!

As much as you run I think you can justify the cost...heres to happy feet!

I've spent 16 hours behind my computer this weekend working on my very procrastinated graduate school assignement.  with my history, I always put it off until the final hour.  I would much rather train than go to grad school.  This time, it just happened to coincide with a minor injury to my foot, so I didn't run today in favor of rest and work.

Tomorrow, I have a 2400 yard swim and 5.5 miler planned for the morning.  I need to get back into the swing, but my brain is now mush, and I'm going to have a few drinks tonight.  Just sayin.

Hockey season-DONE! Had a few too many pops after but all is well. Woke up with a sore back though so a temporary break from training. Hope to get back at it tomorrow.

Have a great week everyone!

x2 - take it from someone who has struggled with plantar fasciitis my whole life.  Those 11900 pennies will be the best money you have ever spent in your life.  Kudos on finishing the grad school project and enjoy every ounce of those beers tonight - you've earned them!

OK Folks - 19 more posts and we will have amassed 1000 posts since we started.  That's pretty damn impressive!  Not that I am competitive but that puts us in the upper half of all groups (11th to be exact).

I took today off as a rest day and will hitt he gym hard tomorrow with a 20 mile walk/run and 40 minutes in the pool.  My goal is to run for 2 minutes and walk for 1 on a treadmill.  Then I'd like to see if I could swim another mile.

I spent the evening shopping for bikes.  Amazing how nice they are.  It was crazy - but each time I tried a bike I discovered something else I liked.  I finished by riding a carbon fiber bike and it felt amazing... 1700 bucks on last year's model.  I'm gonna spend tomorrow looking on-line.  There are some amazing bikes that my friend researched for me - now I just need to learn about them.

7 weeks to my first sprint - really looking forward to it!

Keep up the great work!

Double of Whiskey last night may have attributed to oversleeping 4:40 alarm.  That or the 11:15 bedtime.  Oh well.

I am in a bit of a funk with the foot, however, I will get over it.

I hope the shoes make a difference.  I've been icing, taking IB's and resting.  $119 is a stretch on a teachers salary.

couple Sierra Nevada Torpedo's tonight will not hamper my workout tomorrow.  If anything, I'm giving the foot a break before the big push to the marathon.

David, I've been enjoying the talk of the new bike.  I'd very much like to be in that position one day.

I know what you are saying about bikes. It is worse than buying cars. Like it is only another 200 bucks to the next level, then another 200, then another 150 for that doohicky. Painful. And then you think about the price of gas and you figure, what the heck.

So I discovered audiobooks. They are awesome for 3 hour runs. I love my music, but 10+ hours of a varied selection really only lasts so long.

Kevin - the shoes will make a difference - so will all the icing and rest.  Be sure to stretch.  DH posted some links for me earlier this year and they were incredibly helpful.  I tried to find them but couldn't... Maybe he could post them again.  If it makes you feel any better - I am currently continuing the ritual of icing my (my ITB) before bed.  My wife loves it - what could be sexier!

The decision about the bike is killing me because I too am a teacher.  But today I started thinking this question:  If it means 10 years of healthy riding during which time I stop the crazy yo yo diets and I bring my BP down to a safe level (there were times last year when I was pushing 139/113) - then it's worth it... Right?  Or am I just kidding myself.

I don't know if you have ried it - but Itunes U is a great way to spend some time.  Most of the lectures are free

I was pretty stoked today.  I did a double work out - 30 minutes on the treadmill (2 min running/1 walking) and then I swam a mile.  I felt pretty good. I think I also dropped my mile swim by 4 minutes (how the hell is that possible?  I think I missed a lap or two...).  I had ice cream and beer to celebrate!

Nice workout David.

I especially like the 30 min run.  Take it slow, and listen to your body

I got a swim in this morning.  I am hoping to run a 11 miler tomorrow.  We'll see how the foot feels in the morning.  I have definite goal in mind.  The hard part is not knowing how foot is going to respond to goal.  I've babied it for a week.

Well been a bit down in the dumps lately. Sore back, sore shoulder, not meeting my goals, basically a lousy week! Going in to see the doctor this morning, not sure how that will go. Spin class tonight...not sure if I can make it work but we will see.

Going to a bike auction Saturday. Looking to buy:

Orbea road bike--in my dreams, unless it goes below dirt cheap!

bike pump(s) they have some lezyne pumps, one for the road and one for home hopefully.

Bike repair stand or whatever you call it!

sunglasses-As long as they work and they are cheap. always breaking/scratching so I buy cheap ones!

Another cycle trainer for my wife and son.

Any other suggestions?

David, aah bikes, would love a new one but realistically I am $hit out of luck! The way I look at it is you go for a good quality bike that will last you. Once you figure that out the trick is to realize when the quality and add ons don't equal improvement in your race.( which puts me at about the $250 markLaughing)

Audio books: have you checked your local library? On mine, I can download audio books for my ipod! Easy peasy!

David:double whisky, must have been a tough night! $119 is short term pain long term gain! I have found a pair of shoes I like. I just keep searching for them and when they go on sale I buy a new pair before I need another. Picked up my last pair for $60.

Oh yeah, cancelled my dr's appt. Work and appt did not mix...oh well it feels better then yesterday....

I'm BACK!  Well this whole month has been a wash.  I've been coaching and volunteering more.  I found out a couple weeks ago that my financial aid that was supposed to pay for most of my Ph.D. was cut, so I won't be going to Austin after all.  So I've had to go on to plan C as far as a career.

I've been swimming, but not much of anything else.  The weather is really nice here, just haven't gotten out there for exercising.  Hopefully I'll be able to get back into some sort of schedule before it gets too hot to move when your outside!

Sounds like you have had a crappy month... It totally sucks about the financial aid.  Any chance you might be able to pursue your dream if you postponed it a year?  BTW - What is plan C?

Did not get out of bed this morning.  I did manage a run around the block and am thinking half of the foot is mental.  I went about 1/4 mile and had no problems.  I'm hitting my long run on Sunday, but the week looked pretty sad.

Hope everyone ends up with sweet bikes.  Keep us posted.

Mindy, sorry about the aid.  Hope it all works out.  Thank you for checking in.

I pulled the trigger!  I headed to the bike shop and test drove everything again and settled on the Trek Madone Carbon Frame Bike.  Like the rest of you - I don't have the money either so I put it on the old Visa Card... I justified the outrageous expense (it's the third most expensive thing I've bought behind a car and my wife's engagement ring) by telling myself that the bike will help me to be more healthy and happy.

I also made myself feel better by challenging myself to some serious goals in the next 18 months:

May - Sprint Tri
July - OLY Tri
Aug. - Century (riding to the Redhook Brewery)
Nov - HM
April 2013 - Marathon (I'm gonna bandit Boston which starts 10 miles from my house)
Aug 2013 - HIM - in Michigan

I hope to stay in touch so you can hold my (hopefully it will be skinny by then) accountable.

After spending the night dreaming about biking (I was so excited by my purchase that I couldn't fall asleep), I hit the pool for my long swim.  I adding 200 yards to my personal best and completed 2000 yards.  I've come a long way since January and I thank you for all for the support and suggestions.
