triguy1043 - 2012-05-03 9:30 AM Guys thanks for the comments!! I have been trained in CPR since I was 16 years old and now I am a instructor never thought I would have to use it. But when I did the trigger flipped and I did the job.Our hope is that is we make CPR traininfg and graduation requirement more lives will be saved!!

I think that would be great if it were a part of school. I remember we learned it in health class in 6th grade (got certificates from Red Cross and everything). I'm not sure (doubt it) if that school district still does it, but it's a great thing to teach to everyone.

Morning, peeps!  2600m swim band workout this a.m.  Strength training later.  Abs are sore from the swim band!!!

I'll have to order my copy of Chrissie's book today.

Any book recommendations for bike maintenance, handling skills, training, etc.?  I feel like i need to learn more about the bike, particularly when it comes to maintenance.  Thanks!

Zinn and the Art of Bike Maintenance (there are books for both road bikes and tri bikes).

You can also come to CT and Shaun will give you a hands on course.

I will put that one in my Amazon basket, too.  I'm the only one who doesn't have Chrissie's book yet?  Darn.  I'm a super fast reader though, so I hope to catch up with you guys.

Another title by Zinn that I found to be most helpful was Zinn's
Cycling Primer: Maintenance Tips and Skill Building for Cyclists

So is the actual book available before Kindle? Is that the norm? I want to read now, not wait for May 15th!

Got in the pool for the first time I think in a few months this morning. Nice easy swim with the pull buoy for 1000. It was slow but nice surprisingly. My rest week next week will be a non-impact week all week! If I do anything it will likely just be some light swimming. I would like to try the bands but have no idea what I could use to replicate. Thoughts?

Question on ITBS. Been dealing with that since the fall.  Was able to get it to disappear with the break from shoulder surgery. It presented itself again last week.  Here is my question: Is it the shoes? I now have noticed when I run in my Asic Gel Nimbus, it seems to bother me. When I run in my Zoot TT's it doesnt seem to be an issue at all.  They are both neutral shoes. I have to assume just because a shoe is considered "neutral", doesn't mean all shoe companies are the same, right?

The only gait check I ever got was from Fleet Feet in West Hartford.  That was pretty much 10 seconds on a treadmill, with a video from behind. Response was "yup, you are neutral"  Ok, give me a neutral shoe then.

Yes, I use the roller often, and a pretty dense one. Is there a better way to get a gait check and for the locals here in CT, where, how much etc? Maybe it's my form, who knows.

I was having IT Band pain as well. By wearing IT band straps, doing stretches and exercises to strengthen the hips and using a foam roller to support blood flow and massage the hips it's much better. If you google the stretches and exercises there's a dozen of each all of which help in their own way.

Yes it can be caused from shoes because even though you have neutral shoes, each company will make the shoes with different materials, may land your body different, even though still within the realm of neutral. Run with what works!!!

Agree with Carrie here.  Plus you really need to find out what is causing your ITBS.  Foam rolling really just treats the symptoms and not the cause.

I agree that foam rolling helps treat the symptoms by stimulating blood flow but that also keeps you training. It very well could be the sneakers but from everything I've read on the topic it all starts with weak hips. So even if you swap out your sneakers you should be doing injury prevention exercises and stretches.

I'm just saying that I see a lot of folks act like foam rolling is a cure.  Jeff you need to find out what the underlying cause is and treat that while using ART to keep you training.  I happened to have a mixture of weak, inflexible hips coupled with a muscle imbalance in my thighs that spurred mine.

Scott, when you refer to muscle imbalance, do you mean your quads are bigger or stronger in comparison to your hammies? or do you mean one quad is bigger than the other?  My left quad is slightly bigger than my right, but it's my left side that is having the ITBS issue. I'm sure the imbalance that I am referring to prob has something to do with my cycling form.

By the way, the ITBS I am having is no where near as severe as it was in the fall. I've found some hip exercises and stretches online and have been doing them.  I also never have an issue on the bike.

Yes, generally ITBS is a muscle imbalance of hips, glutes or hams ... Mine was weaker glutes and hams. I still have issues sometimes, but am working in that.

I was quad dominant.  Basically my body was trying to compensate for weaker hip muscles and hammys by engaging my quads.  Took some run form retraining, functional strength training, and lots of yoga to work it out.

I know I was just clarifying what I was saying. I think we are more or less saying the same thing.

So, after taking some time off, I decided to put a stake in the ground and have something to drive training again.  Initially, I considered the Hartford Half Marathon but Kel didn't think that was ambitious enough.  (I could go out and finish 13 miles tomorrow if I wanted so it is not really a goal to finish)

I settled on signing up for the Hartford Marathon.  I have 5 months to get back to a level where I can 'run' 26 miles and thought I would share that news with the group.

Good for you Shaun. Not knowing anything about that marathon can you tell us what the course is like. I love destination marathons, might have to look into it. (I decided destination IMs are too stressful, bike transport, tri gear crap...)

What plan will you be following?

Planned to run 60 Mins this morning. Looked at map and all the rain was out near Kelly in southington, coming my way, but figured enough time for me to get it in. 25 mins in, here it comes, hard. It was 48 degrees. Somewhat bearable but not completely. Got a 44 min run in instead. Have a great day
