Member 258 | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED All the discussion on cadence and power is very interesting, thanks. I just got set up with virtual power on the trainer via Trainer Road, anyone else using this? I did my test last week and my first interval workout last night. HOLY COW. Found out my perceived exertion was a few light years away from reality. I'm good at starting the intervals very hard, but then tended to drift down. Much more difficult to have the immediate feedback to keep my power up, but I think it's going to make me better. (As long as it doesn't kill me first). Also went to my first Masters swim practice this morning. Alas, the blinding speed that I had developed over the past couple months of work was but an illusion. I did do a longer and harder workout than I would have done on my own, so it was overall a success. The main problem with a 5 am workout is that it is now 10 am and I am ready for bed. Sounds like many of us are seeing the workouts amping up this week. Hang in there! |

Veteran 536 Long Island, NY | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED CyborgQueen - 2013-02-12 8:15 PM So f*cking upset today. My friend, Mike Klute, passed away cycling yesterday. He had a heart attack. He was on the BLV crew for a long time and a great rider. He pulled me on a large hill between mile 70-75 when I was ready to give up, and he kept saying, "you can do it. You're strong. Just keep on turning the cranks.". I last saw him on Sunday just chatting and laughing. We all are sadden by the sudden loss. He was 66 years old and can beat the crap out of the youngsters. He hung out with us every Tues and Thursday night rides. Although there have been other cyclist deaths, I didn't know them. This was the first cyclist that I knew passed away. So sorry to here that you lost someone close - my prays are with you. |

Elite 3515 Romeoville, Il | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED CyborgQueen - 2013-02-13 10:05 AM Thanks Brian!! That's helpful. I want to be able to increase my cadence and power climbing vs anything else. Thanks again.
Glad I could help!
Seriously try that warmup! I'm always amazed at how that works. There are days I feel tired and my natural cadence seems more like 80ish. Then I do that warmup and notice I'm spinning at 90-93 during the 20-30" at FTP! It seems to wake up the legs. I adjust those final intervals sometimes for whatever workout I'm doing. It doesn't change during base workouts, but if I'm doing VO2 max or FTP testing or 2x20's I add 10" at 110% FTP on the last 30" interval.
Good luck! |

Expert 1146 Chugiak, Alaska | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED Finally finished my bike fit yesterday - overall it took almost 4 hours!!! Road the bike in the aero set up for an hour today and it definitely feels different - my legs, abs, shoulders, neck and sit bones are going to need to toughen up! Went for the Adamo saddle - I hope it is worth the price! IF I get a chance I will post a pic. just need to transfer all the gadgets from my old bike to it, hopefully this weekend. |

Talk about comprehensive fit! Longest fit I had was about 2 hours, and funny enough, the fit was too slack for me now. I did the GURU fit recently and it made everything much easier and faster to adjust my bike. Luckily I did it for free! Still getting a bit used to the aggressive fit, but my shoulders no longer get achy. But I do notice I'm much more comfortable. If after a few weeks of riding and you still get achy spots, revisit the fit. It should go away in a few rides. Is this your first real bike fit? Edited by CyborgQueen 2013-02-13 5:20 PM |

My fitter was awesome - she spent the first 30 min just going over goals, injuries and then things like looking at my feet, shoes, the way I walked.... Apparently one of my arches in higher than the other (that is the one with the PF) and I my right foot rolls inward when I walk/run (that is the one with hip issues). She adjusted my cleats to help alleviate some of those issues. First fit on this bike, the last time I had one was much shorter and it was just trying to get me comfortable on a bike that didn't really fit me. The greatest thing about this fit was it was for both TT style and regular. We have it so that to change out of TT I just have to shorten the seat post and change out saddles (and move a spacer in the stem if I want even more comfort.) All things I can do myself! I have never heard of a GURU fit - what is that? |

I lot of people don't think about the impact of the cleats and shoes on your feet and legs until they get a fitting. Plus, riding in aero requires a lot more considerations to proper fit than a road bike set up. Enjoy your new bike Robin! |

I managed to get up this morning - do half hour on the bike trainer then outside for an hours run. The longest both time and distance this year. I am now ready to have a can of Guinness tonight and embrace my rest day tomorrow. (still have to go to work though, sadly ) Jennifer Great job, Jennifer! This week's training is going fairly well--had a good day on Tuesday with strength training in the morning, a solid run after work (feels like I'm getting back my running mojo) and a good swim with the masters group that evening. The coach indicated that he saw some progress with my technique, so that's good! Yesterday was supposed to be a 30 minute bike/ 15 minute run, but it was raining, so I was relegated inside to the roller trainer. That thing does not seem to provide me with much of a workout, but it does test my balance and concentration! (Especially on the tri bike in the aero position--I'm pretty good at it, though.) I still ran outside in the rain, which was quite refreshing. My quads were super sore all day, and the spinning helped loosen them, and they felt really powerful on the run (though my cadence was really slow). This morning, however, I went to do strength work at the gym and my heart rate kept soaring! I know that can be an indicator of fatigue, but I don't FEEL extra fatigue, so it was very strange. 45 minute high cadence, zone 1 bike after work followed by masters swim. Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! Oh--I made a treat for my coworkers, which is a really big deal for me because I am NOT a cook (I've had to learn over the past few months because I'm trying to stick to a mostly Paleo diet), and it was delicious! Recipe can be found here: http://www.active.com/nutrition/Articles/Raw-Chocolate-Cherry-Mini-... (I used strawberries instead of cherries). And another victory, I am finally back to my pre-Thanksgiving weight, now just working on getting to race weight before the next phase of my training. |

I was completely amazed at how well the avocado worked as a base for the mousse! I didn't tell anyone here what was in it until after they tried it--and three of them do NOT like avocado--but they loved the mousse! The cocoa powder and maple syrup completely cover up the avocado flavor, so don't be scared...try it! Yum... |

I have never heard of a GURU fit - what is that? GURU fit is a mechanical fit. Instead of using your bike for the fitting, it uses their set up. They do have various bar widths and even triathlon bike set ups. The way I see it is pretty much like being at an eye doc's office. "Is the better or is that better?" "How about this one?" And everything moves by computer. Seat post up and down, saddle forward/backward, crank sizes, stem forward and back, stem up and down, etc. After you feel like, "This is a perfect fit", the fitter checks the angles on your bike to make sure it's not some wonky numbers. Then important measurements show up on the screen, then the fitter takes those numbers and adjust your bike to fit that. Then you get on your bike and see how you feel. The reasoning behind is GURU adjusts everything on the fly instead of the fitter making you get off the bike, get on the bike, and adjusting at the same time. It's more geared towards on how YOU feel on the bike, not measurements. PLUS - if you're looking for a new bike, the numbers can apply to the new bike and get the right bike type as well. I have never tried the Retul fit (although I would like to, just for curiosity sake), but it's expensive. |

Tried them out today - didn't notice them too much on the soft snow pack, but I bet they will rock on harder, icier trails. The fact that I didn't notice them was also a bonus 'cause running in my yak trax feels like running on platform boots. I saw the greatest thing today while running by the lake that is cleared for skating - 3 ladies ice skating while pushing strollers! |

Master 1539 Sin City | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED Brian - This is what I did today on my trainer Your 25 minute warm up (and I hope I did it right!!) - at 1:30, spin 100 rpm for 30" (little power), rest - at 3:00, spin 100 rpm for 1'. rest 1' - at 5:00, at 60% FTP, 90 RPM for 5' - at 10:00 at 70% FTP, 90 RPM for 5' - at 15:00 at 100% FTP for 20", rest 40" - 4 x 30" at 100% FTP for 30", rest 30" - at 20' rest for 5' THEN I did the hill intervals that you recommended. Did 6 of them in an hour w/ 5' warm down, high cadence low power. LOOOOOOVED it! :-) I felt like I could really keep going and do 2 hours on the trainer, but didn't want to do too much. You're right the WU really worked and woke up my legs very quickly. I couldn't believe how easy it was. All the other WU i've done on the trainer was just 5-10 min easy at 70-85 rpm, and by the time I got to the main set, my legs wasn't feeling quite ready. This one, got me all ready to go. Definitely will be using this many times, plus it made the 25 minutes seem so quick, and I can do more than 1:30 on the trainer because of this. Thanks a bunch. I did a little experimenting with that warm up yesterday myself. My coach wanted a recovery ride from me. Zone 1 only, but at a comfortably high cadence. So I did just the high cadence every other minute or so instead of going up to 60/70% FTP and then doing short intervals at threshold. After a few times spinning at 100+ cadence for a minute I was able to spin at 90-91 for an entire hour. I kept the power around 85-90, so little to no load to speak of. But that kept my HR under 112, which for me is the top of zone 1. I've never really done a recovery ride like that before so I was surprised my HR stayed soooo low at that cadence! |

Getting some good work in training wise though, so that is good. Really upped the pool frequency this week, but since I started with 0 to 1 pool trip per week, that bar was kind of low. Swim meet Sunday for our masters group. Swimming the freestyle events, 50 , 100, 200 and 500 basically to get another pool session in plus it gives me some intensity that I don't always get on my own. I will still do my long run before the meet and my 2 hour bike session on the trainer Saturday. Anyone else racing this weekend or have big workouts? Have a great weekend everyone! |

Last big weekend of base miles though! Well, since one of my races is in a lake with alligators and snakes, and another is in the ocean with sharks I figured it would be wise to be faster than average! Just kidding (Robin, there are no snakes in that lake!) After missing almost a year and having taken the lessons before the injury, I want to take advantage of the opportunity to improve. Thanks! Sounds like you and your new trainer are going to get intimately familiar with each other this weekend! |
