Jamie: Glad you made it safely! Enjoy!

Nathan: Congratulations on the new apartment and the baby! So exciting!

Suzy: Strong work with the swimming! I'd love to get to that one day.

Food before morning stuff, not normally. Unless it's for something longer than 1.5 hours.

I missed the weigh in! It's so hard to get on the computer these days. When I finally did weigh I was down to 144, but day after day of sweating is keeping me pretty light water-wise. Hard to tell where I'm really at right now.

Got in some speed work and I was supposed to keep a 4:57 pace for 4 each 800. All over the place. 5:00, 4:23, 4:37, and 4:30ish again. I'm probably not running enough pace runs to figure it out. I can't FEEL it these days. I remember a time when I could.

We're mountain biking and swimming tomorrow morning, then we have a bike race on Sunday. Haven't decided on 20 or 40 miles. Might depend on how we feel after the MTB ride.

TGIF!!

Quiet group today. I'm about to head out for a swim and some strength work. Weekend will be running and biking. Mostly pretty easy.

Have a good weekend everyone!

Everyone is either iced in or thawing out Randy.

That being said, it was thawed out enough to get back on my bike. 4 miles in 21:28 sounds like a pretty good day to me.

Just got my 3 miles in. Good news is NO PAIN! Ran each mile about 30 seconds faster than normal. I must've needed to get out of the house.

Off to help my husband back for Colombia. Have friends racing Panama 70.3 this weekend. My husband has caddied in Panama (and in Feb) before. He said the terrain there is trickier than you'd think at sea level. I don't know if the race is all coastal or if they go up into the hills at all.

Nancy-Glad you got your run in!

I got my run in this morning, and it felt really great! I did 6 miles at a good pace; in the 4th mile, I managed to hold a pretty solid 5k pace, and then focused on an active recovery for the last mile, which went really well. My legs finally feel good after ToS; they weren't sore for that long, but they were definitely tight! I hadn't run since Sunday, so I felt pretty fresh, which was nice.

I've got nothing on tap tonight as far as triathlon goes, just a good dinner! Tomorrow, we're planning on a doing a bike ride, hopefully outside, if the weather is nice enough! I hope everyone is having a great Valentine's Day!

I have been busy as heck again. A lot of work and squeezing in training when ever I can find a few free minutes. Sorry I have missed out on all of the good news and congratulations. I am anxiously waiting to find out the sex of the "groups" baby

I worked the overnight shift last night and ended up being up for most of the night. It hurt me. I don't recover from working over night quite as well as I could 10 years ago. It impeded my workouts a little but I managed to get them in.

Now, for something crazy........ I have been ordered by the Jedi Master (my coach) to take the next four days off from triathlon training. I am headed to Northern Michigan in a couple hours for four days of skiing and relaxing. Mostly downhill but I have a brand new set of cross country skis that I can't wait to try out. So, no triathlon training but I will still get in some cardio. It will be more like playing in the snow than working out. Internet access is very spotty up there so my check ins may be pretty infrequent for the next several days.

Bike is in the shop getting new cables, bar tape, new tririg front brake and general tuneup. I figure the next four days are the best possible time to be without my bike. Randy, I may have created a new mount for my bike computer. Cost me 70 cents and probably 30 minutes of time. I am not sure if it will work but if it does I will post pics.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Phone interview finally occurred about 30 minutes ago and went really well. It's an on-campus internship stent in the publicity department and they're looking at Fall semester for me if I get in. They asked me to shoot over a resume and due to the time frame, getting it a week or two from now won't be looked down upon.

Good thing too; I don't have a clue how to write/tailor resumes and cover letters.

Definitely something I'll be contemplating during my walk tomorrow afternoon. Gonna be making a run home for a longish weekend with my brother to pick up a kitten.

As if the ice storm and lack of electricity wasn't enough, we had an earthquake last night, too! Epicenter was about 20-30 miles north of our house.

Cold and windy today. Heading to the YMCA after getting the husband on his way.
a
Bryan...that kitten is ADORABLE!! Did you feel the earthquake? I have friends in Atlanta that did, and others north in Asheville and Charlotte, NC.

The photo is from Thursday and is in Aiken, SC...8 miles east of us.

Wow! Cool but unfortunate picture Nancy.

Ughhh...had a terrible ride this morning. First time I have cut a workout short since starting this craziness. Legs felt dead, couldn't get my HR under 165 even on 3-5 minute recoveries, and it was just getting worse. Knocked off at 90 minutes of a 2 hour 15 minute workout. Now I am angry with myself.

Was supposed to reward myself with some craft beers at a local beer festival this afternoon and now don't feel like I earned it!

BS! You earned it. If you are able to complete/exceed every workout then you are not challenging yourself....(said in best drill instructor voice) There are very few legitimate reasons not to enjoy some quaility beer. Struggling with a workout is not one of them. Enjoy!

Bike workout done now heading out for a short run. Need to head out to shop for some new running shorts this afternoon.

Well, because of the weather the Dr's appointment got postponed. We don't have a new appointment yet but hopefully we can get one in next week. So y'all will have to suffer and wait with anticipation just like us to find out the gender

On that note... it's been tough getting workouts in... pool was closed and obviously i wasn't gonna ride in the snow so I had a few extra runs than planned with week... and rain today isn't helping. still holding on to hope that I can get a nice long ride in this weekend

Nathan--sorry to hear we won't know our babies sex until next week!

The good news:  it was 10F warmer for my long run this week versus last week!!  The bad news:  It was still -3F at the start!  Phooey.  This weather is wearing on me, but I still got that 3:15, 22m sucker done (although it wasn't my best effort)!  Now, I am eagerly awaiting an awesome Italian dinner tonight with some good friends!

Enjoy the weekend!

Suzy - Basically took the words out of my mouth. It wasn't as incredible as their upset of the USSR in '84, but possibly just as tense.

We did get the kitten today, but I'm not going to flood this group with cuteness, so if anyone wants to see pictures, shoot me a private message and I'll send a few your direction.

On to more tri-related matters, three in particular:

1) After all of this weather chaos, I finally splurged on a trainer so I don't have the weather as an excuse to miss a day. It turned out that, courtesy of a coupon I was carrying, I only needed to drop another $10 to get a significant upgrade, so I went for a Elite Qubo Fluid Trainer. It has a wide range on the resistance and it's quiet! There's a few people in the apartment below us who like....well....let's just say our apartment smells like a skunk when they do what they like. It wasn't a huge factor in my decision as I was looking for a quiet trainer anyway, but avoiding WWIII down below is an added benefit (although they would be moving to El Suckville if they insisted on starting that war).

2) I'm considering a small shift in my training plan. Since I got a trainer and will be getting shoes (see point #3 below), I'm thinking about using the three month beginner cycling plan here on BT to help drop some of the excess weight and get me in better shape. It'll mean that I drop running for 3 months, but the program will dump me off shortly before the opening of my neighborhood pool in late May to prep the swim and run for my sprint in much better shape than I would be otherwise. With another three months to pull that off, I can focus completely on getting ready in August for an early September Sprint in Carrollton. It'll be my only one this coming season, but the key right now is establishing a base. Once established, I got 8-9 months to prep for an Olympic, maybe a HIM if I'm ambitious and can pull it off, and knock the sprint time out a bit.

The only thing is figuring out how to squeeze three rounds of running, 3 rounds of cycling, and 2 rounds of swimming into a 6-day workout schedule while keeping everything flexible; I like my Sunday off days :D

3) This is the part where I ask for recommendations. I'm finally upgrading to cycling shoes and I'm looking for a pair that are two-bolt, durable, and ideally under the $60 range. I don't have a clue what brands are good, bad, or indifferent, so if you know of any solid models in that range, I'm open to recommendations. If it helps any, I got a $20 off $100 coupon and $26 of credit at PerformanceBike, so if I like quality (and I do), now's the time to get it.

Nancy, that picture is surreal!

Snowstorms, ice storms, and earthquakes in the South -- what's the world coming too? Glad to hear everybody is upright and trudging onward...

Chris, I agree with Randy -- give yourself a break... and enjoy a beer. You've been doing great.  Rest up and hit the saddle again another day.  I pretty much expect to have a bad workout every now and then.

I've been battling insomnia again lately -- ugh. I was up until 4 AM this morning reading and trying to fall asleep. At least it was a good read -- an autobiography written by a friend of mine who was a pro triathlete in the 80s and 90s.

Nasty crash on the hills yesterday. Made it down a tricky descent only to go off a short, but sheer drop. Knocked the back tire totally off the bike and landed hard on the top of my head. Walked away with just a few bruises and cuts, but I'm shaken. Luckily my training partner's husband with bike fixing experience was with us to put the bike back together. Riding back to the start after that even a little clump of grass looked dangerous.

Blah.

Bike race today. It felt okay and helped loosen the muscles all tightened up from the crash.

Why do I do this again?!

Blanda--I hope you plan to use a different helmet. One and done!  When I crashed last May, it was my helmet's debut and I still had to trash it and get a new one.  Be safe!

Chris--what do you think is causing the sleeplessness?  I occasionally suffer from it and there always seems to be a root cause (e.g. worried about something, something in your diet, etc).

Bryan--congrats on the trainer.  It'll help a lot. One question, why dump running all together versus simply changing the focus?  I often have a bike focus in the off season, but still maintain some level of running to keep the muscle memory.

Blanda-glad you are OK after the fall. It sounds scary. All that soccer has you conditioned for all these "hard tackles" when biking

Steve-hope the insomnia passes. For me, as I have gotten old/older it seems my sleeping at night can be thrown off by more minor changes. Fortuunately, I have never had issues with insomnia. Hope it resolves quickly.

Bryan-Im with Suzy on dropping the running totally. Unless I'm dealing with an injury I try to keep up with all 3 disciplines. Bike focus is great but maybe throw in a few short runs after you finish on the trainer if your location makes that possible.  After a bike workout you will already be warmed up so head out for the run. Saves time changing and getting ready for a run only workout.  The weather will soon be much better.

Bryan-question on the bike shoes. All the shoes I have ever used have 3 holes on the sole. I have always used Shimano/SPD cleats. This seemed the easiest to use for me when I started out and they make a variety of pedals ...I think Performance even has their own brand to fit Shimano/SPD cleats. Pedals are very much a personal preference issue.

Heading outside to ride for the first time since December. Weather is chilly at 35 degrees but it should be 50 by 9:00am. Been doing all my trainer rides on the tri bike so going to do an esy hour or two on the road bike then a 20-25 minutes run. All easy today.

Bike shoes are like regular shoes - are they comfortable? great - get em.

two holes are MTB shoes - which is perfectly fine. They are shimano SPD compatible (not road pedals). Advantage: easier to walk around in Disadvantage: they are a little heavier

Randy mentioned performance's house brand http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1101498_-1...
I've never tried them but they look to be more of a casual style

Pricepoint has a house brand called Sette http://www.pricepoint.com/Brand/Sette/Sette-Element-Mountain-Shoe.a...
I think those look a little more like what you'd want.

Those are the two that come to mind. Any brand you find on those sites will be fine. Google them a little as some may be narrower in the toe box than others or some may have a deeper heel etc. Just depends what fits your foot.

Suzy, the first thing my training buddies and I talked about after the crash was getting a new helmet. Luckily it's a couple years old, so won't feel so bad about retiring it.

Randy, believe it or not, my soccer skills save me from more damage on a lot of my mishaps. Rolling into and out of falls is something we learn from getting knocked down running full tilt. Transfers well to falling off a bike most of the time. It could have been worse and I thank my lucky stars and my training it wasn't.

Tomorrow is a holiday for husband, so I can get a full swim and long run in, woo hoo!

Blanda...Your training seems to be far more 'extreme' than mine ever will be!! Glad you've come through relatively unscathed. You're a far stronger woman than I. I steer clear of those mountain bikes.

Absolutely GORGEOUS day in Augusta today. Amazing how the weather can change like that. Ran in short sleeves and a skort...was 62 degrees this afternoon. Had my longest run since late December at a whopping 3.75 miles. It felt really good, though. I had some mild leg pain, but it's all localized in that one area of my calf that we now know is an issue. I'm kicking myself for not working more on that hematoma 20 years ago. To know then what I know now.

I think all of Augusta was out and about yesterday...must've been stir crazy. I went out with a mission to order my new tri shoes and try on a new pair of running shoes I'd ordered. Ended up getting neither! Bike shop was closed (guess I'll call and order them tomorrow) and I decided to stick with the Hokas I've been running in rather than go with the cushioned model of the New Balance shoe I've been wearing for the past 2 years. Saved me $300 combined, though, not getting either.

Hope everyone else is enjoying their weekend.

Weather has also warmed up considerably here again. Lost 4 lbs on my 8.80 mile run this morning. Welcome back humidity! I'm feeling really good about how things are going in training. The last 2 days have had some solid brick type workouts that went really well. I slipped on the stairs this morning and landed on my elbow and the top of my foot. I'm the queen of stupid season ending injuries. Thankful that this wasn't one of them. I won't be wearing socks without shoes in the house any more

Blanda- I'm glad that you are okay. Geez. Talk about extreme sports. Hope you do well at your bike race today.

Bryan- too bad you aren't female with a size 9 foot. Do you like pink? lol.. I have a pair of really nice pink SIDI triathlon shoes that are too small in the toe box for sale          If possible I would suggest getting a pair of triathlon shoes over cycling shoes. The straps are different and you will want the triathlon shoes for racing. Either will work on the bike. But if you get the triathlon shoes it will save money long term.

Nancy- Great news that you were able to get out today. Your weather has been crazy. I have a pair of Hoka's that I wear to work.

Randy- how is the new roadie? Glad to be outside?

Steve- what time did you finally go to sleep? Ugh..

Chris- I hope you ending up having that beer.
