I'm reading that book about race weight and it's really got me thinking about my overall nutrition... It's not so great and the fact that I restrict calories to a degree I need to make sure what I do eat is more healthy if I'm going to have the energy for all of this. Do you guys have some creative ways to eat vegetables other then salads and steaming them? I'm not a big fan. I'm better then I used to be but it's always an effort to get enough in.The food year starts officially on Monday Janauary 4, 2010 at 12:01 a.m. I read that and really liked it. It helped me figure out a good goal to go for. For veggies, I have plenty of ways. For instance, I have a Vitamix blender and I'll make smoothies with half fruit, half veggies. If you always use an apple or some grapes, you'll never notice the spinach, cabbage, celery, carrots, or cucumbers you put in there. That blender pulverizes everything. I also eat a lot of raw veggies. I've been doing that for years so my tastes have changed. I can eat almost any raw vegetable plain and still enjoy the taste, which is a big change in how I grew up. My favorite are colored bell peppers, cucumbers, and tomatoes. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've never really been much of a veggie fan myself. I am trying too. I have found myself recently craving Cosi salads. Mostly I crave carbs but I have been trying to eat better or less carbs lately. I want to start eating quinoa. I've heard it's the ideal food. http://www.quinoa-recipes.com/ IdealMuse - 2010-01-02 4:13 PM jdbadger - 2010-01-02 12:07 PM The food year starts officially on Monday Janauary 4, 2010 at 12:01 a.m. Good deal. Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Happy New Year everyone!!! Scott, thanks for letting us know the "Food Year" officially starts at 12:01am Monday...because after having cornbread, friend chicken, yams, mac-n-cheese,etc plus I won't even SAY how many slices of Sweet Potato Pie I had last weekend...it's nice to know my "do-over" begins Monday. Today my boyfriend (Or "Hetersexual Life Mate" as I've started calling him) turns "40" and I was supposed to take him to his dream come true Fogo de Chao for an all you can eat meat smorgasbord but since I caught a pretty bad cold that hit hard last night we're postponing til next weekend. I kind of wished it was still tonight because then going into work with jiggly butt next week would be OK because of the holidays. So I'll just start some light workouts this week in addition to running so I'm back in the swing and not pushing myself too hard to start. I was apparently on Santa's "Nice" list and did get an iphone for Christmas and have yet to download a triathlon app. Any recommendations on any apps?? Whether it be food logging as suggested earlier or any other apps, training, fun, games or whatever. Alright, going to dope myself up on cold-meds and have a lovely evening!! Night everyone! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have lots of apps on my iphone. I'll work up a list. iMap my Run or iMap my Ride either is good. One of the first apps I bought was bejeweled, I still play it and they change and update works with FB friends, I'd say that's the best bang for my buck if you like those kind of games. BT is coming out with an iphone app, I'm not sure when but I'm looking forward to it. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh hell, I LOVE cosi salads. They were my guilty pleasure when I would go downtown to swim in lake Michigan as there is one just off the El (train). Guilty pleasure because I liked the dressing so would often have it with dressing even though I rarely put dressing on salads. I just got into quinoa too. I made an apple/quinoa salad on xmas. It was good. A little more summer-salad-like but it was tasty. As for the smoothies yeah I've been doing it with a cup of spinach, but I've gotten out of the habit again and never did venture off into including other veggies. I'm thinking maybe a veggie soup if you puree the veggies up with some chicken stock in a blender might be interesting too and something that can be kept in the fridge to be nuked up quickly. I'll have to see if I can find anything like that. I remember doing that with mushrooms once. Keep the ideas coming. I'm really serious about cleaning up this diet. losta - 2010-01-02 6:28 PM I've never really been much of a veggie fan myself. I am trying too. I have found myself recently craving Cosi salads. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sweet. I mentioned an I-phone app a few posts back that my husband uses for logging food. He likes it a lot. We were supposed to goto Texas De Brasil (which is just like Fogo) for my birthday because I had a free birthday dinner certificate (salad bar is awesome) but that was the day weather was awful and we were stuck in traffic all day... So we never went. We might still go but not sure I want to veer off my food plan once I get started so dunno. KiwiJDRPH - 2010-01-02 7:47 PM Happy New Year everyone!!! Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Veggies, right now roasted root veggies are in season and are my favorite... Cube 1 red potato, 1 yukon, 1 beet, 1 turnip, 1 squash, sprinkle with olive oil, sprinkle with spices (salt, pepper, garlic, ginger, sage, crushed red pepper - or whatever - the more the merrier), bake at 375-400 for 45 minutes or until softish. Turnips, squash, and beets are extremely delicious when roasted. YUM. Pair it with lightly sauteed greens (collard, kale, chard, mustard, spinach, cabbage) and a piece of meat. We make potato soup - again cube the potatoes and any other veggies you want to throw in there, throw in some chunks of chicken, throw in a box of organic chicken stock, spices, cook on medium heat for about an hour, keeps well in fridge or freeze. Raw veggies are good too, cucumbers, tomatoes, avacado - and don't forget good old cole slaw (apple cider vinegar, chopped cabbage, salt/pepper - simple). |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm back!! Thanks for everyone's well wishes and checking in on me. I really appreciate it. I'm still very sore but off my meds and out of my sling. My shoulder and knee are in bad shape. Both are still swollen and painful. I am getting mobility back in my shoulder. I'm nervous about my work outs but I don't want to hurt myself more by pushing before I feel ready. I'm going to try to go for a short walk/jog tomorrow to see how the knees feels. 2010 Goals: (1) Log food and try to maintain a healthy calorie intake. (2) Figure out my Heart Rate monitor and train more effectively (3) Eat more fruits and Veggies (4) Stay injury free in 2010 (5) Train as hard as possibe to successfully finish both IM events. (6) Do more strength training (7) Try to get down do a more healthy weight. In my mind that is another 20-25 pounds. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi Guys quick note I noticed Amazon has on sale this week these magazines for 5.00/yr Fitness, Eating Well, and Vegetarian Times. I just ordered Eating Well myself as I've gotten it in the past and it has good healthy recipes. Can't really lose for 5 bucks. ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Got it. They don't appear to be where I ever am. There is one in Orange County (Costa Mesa), but I am never there. I will keep my eye out for if they expand in my area. But do you all recommend them for their yummy salads or are you warning us to stay away because of their yummy salads (some restaurant salads cam be lethal)? |

My mom passes on her Prevention magazine, which I do look at from time to time, and Self or Shape or something, which I barely glance through. I believe what Prevention preaches, but it is the same thing every single month (but I do check the recipes in case the urge to cook overwhelms me), but I am beyond what Shape/Self advocates. Years ago I did read that type of magazine. I read it every single month for several years before I did a lick of exercise. However, I am intrigued by the title Eating Well and may hop over to Amazon to check it out. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yeah Kate's back! Take it easy for a bit Kate. I like the Cosi Shanghai Chicken Salad, it's probably my favorite lunch now. 313 calories, 235 for the whole grain flat bread. I have about 5 Cosi's within 30 minutes of me. Cosi lists nutrition tables on their web site. Another salad I like but can rarely eat is California Pizza Kitchen Thai Crunch Salad but it's over 2000 calories so only on very special occasions (like running a half marathon or something in that energy expenditure range). I did an introductory Kettle bell class this morning. It's near my Mom's house which is about an hour from me but I hope to come back every week or 10 days. I learned the proper form which is important in kettlebell workouts. They say I could be sore tomorrow, but we'll see because I'm pretty flexible and usually don't get too sore just working out, not that I don't feel like I worked out, just not much muscular soreness....usually. I read triathlete, runners world and bicycling magazines. Sometimes at the gym I'll grab one of the women's mags like self or womens health but in general they are too girly for me. Where is everyone food logging? I'm on Livestrong my plate. Edited by losta 2010-01-03 11:44 AM |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What the heck..we are talking about salads? I guess I better take part. I checked in at the airport last night and they put the Heavy sticker on me insted of my baggage. I put on 6lbs while I was away. I think part of it was my body trying to store as much fat as possible since the weather got as low as -20 (without wind chill). I have gotten to be such a wimp. Hope everyone is doing well..Especially Krash.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yeah I'm not into the magazine thing either I only mention because Eating Well generally has good recipes that are healthy, and it was dirt cheap. I think my weight it quite up this week too. Damage to be tomorrow. Kate - Glad you don't have to wear the sling anymore. How did your test run go? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm still not sure of my weight but my scales come this week. I Just saw my mom for the first time in 3 weeks, she said I look like I lost more weight. Scales you say, that's plural. Well I ordered my Tanita Ironman bodyfat monitor scale and then I heard about withings scale that has an iPod interface and can even Twitter. I'm such a geek I had to order it. I'll have a scale contest and see which is better. See I am nuts. http://www.withings.com/ Edited by losta 2010-01-03 3:54 PM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh very cool. Wish I knew about that scale before I bought my new one, but then again probably best I didn't because of the price tag. Let us know how you like it! |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Leave it to Lisa to find the 2 coolest scales out there! can't wait for the updates. I had my trial run today and was very happy with the results. I walked a quarter mile, ran two, and then walked another quarter mile. The run was great. 10:30 minute miles and no knee pain. The shoulder was as sore as usual but at least i could run!! Weigh in on Wednesday for the NUTSO big prize. I hope someone loses a pound or two! I'm pretty sure it will not be me. |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I agree. Lisa will find the coolest, geekiest stuff out there and who would have thought that it would be a scale. Well, let me tell you, if Santa had brought me an iPhone I am pretty sure I would be getting the scale that would talk to it. But, see, apparently Santa knew what he was doing by not bringing me an iPhone. I did order the Eating Well magazine. Yeah, for $5 it was worth giving it a shot. I liked that it said that it was also interested in food origins. I don't know what THEY mean by that, but I am becoming very interested in where our food comes from. And every time there is a new Salmonella or eColi outbreak, I get even more interested. Anyway, I should get my first copy about the same time at Debb and we can compare notes. Kate, you must feel very encouraged by the success with your run today. I think you are going to be OK and you only had this little setback in order to give me a smidge of a chance of trouncing you at the HIM in March. I was supposed to go on a rolling hill 2-1/2 hour ride today. That didn't happen, but I did go on a very nice outside one-hour ride. I haven't uploaded it yet, but it was almost exactly 16 miles and so I am pretty stoked about that. I worked at keeping my cadence up to at least 90 - not 100% successful, but the 16 mph speaks for itself. I went on this river trail that is essentially flat, except for the up and down when it goes under the overpasses (I am counting that as the "rolling hills" - I doubt my coach would agree). Anyway, the thing about the river trail that I had forgotten is that it gets very, very buggy in late afternoon. So I probably got a little extra protein with gnats in my mouth, nose and eyes. Yuck. Makes a good argument for not waiting until late afternoon to get your ride in. I am planning to get on the trainer tonight to hopefully make up the rest of my scheduled ride time. It sounds like everyone is back in their respective towns and ready to hit the road running (figuratively and literally) tomorrow with our workouts and food. Good luck to us all. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Leah and Kate you don't know how lucky you are in a warm climate where you can bike outside all year. Take advantage of it and stay safe. Do you wear bright colors on and reflective fabrics? I try to buy all my bike jerseys in bright colors and I have some reflective and bright colors for running too. As far as our 2010 mileage I noticed Debb posted her mileage to her blog and I did as well, I suggest to post a total to our blogs on Sundays so we can gauge our progress. I got my schedule from my coach, it works really well into my training pattern. I'm excited to start. I have a short run today and swim practice tonight. Happy training everyone. |

I do wear bright cycling clothes, but not necessarily reflective because I don't go out when it is dark. I have reflective running clothes. I will set up some sort of spreadsheet to monitor our miles, but I am not sure I know how to use the BT Challenge spreadsheets as I have never tried. That would be the place to put the data. If I have time tonight, I will play around with it and see what I can figure out. I do know how to use Excel. On our logs, that thingy on the left gives the totals for the YTD and MTD. |
