JoshKaptur - 2010-05-05 6:13 AM Thanks for the well wishes.  Right now I'm having "taper madness" even though I'm not really tapering.  Getting obsessed with pacing strategies, how conservative I will be, whether I'll aim for a solid performance with 95% certainty or a really stellar performance with 75% certainty and 25% chance of a blowup, finding the line between giving everything on the course for a B race vs. compromising training for my A race (lake placid) with the extra recovery that would be needed, etc.

This will be my first race ever not racing as a clydesdale (I'm at 187 this morning) -- I need to remember that that, in itself, is a success.  I'm also virtually guaranteed to PR, even if I blow up by pushing too hard... so I should be thankful for that too.  But dammit I just won't be thrilled unless I break 5 hours.

This race is a USAT half distance championship qualifier.  I qualify with a 5:05 or better, or second in my AG or better.  Based on last year's race results, I've got no chance of the latter.  Based on my training times, I have a small chance at the former.

Good luck Josh, Leaving the clydesdale division is a huge accomplishment, congrats on that.  We'll be thinking about you on Saturday and looking forward to your report.

Awesome analogy. I am really happy you found a plan you have confidence in bc u seemed really uncertain about what to do. Let me know how you like this plan...i am following the beginner BT plan...but maybe next time (if there is a next time) i would try the intermed plan

I can be the Analogy Queen when I want to be. Cool    Did you start the beginner BT plan exactly 20 weeks from LP?

I started early thinking that I'd get sick, injured, ect (which has happened, but it honestly (suprisingly?!) hasn't been as bad as last year when I was training for my first HIM).  I am just sooo thankful that I gave myself that head start.  I'm glad that I'm able to experience how I would have felt before taper if I had followed the plan starting just 20 weeks from the race.  I have no doubt that I could get to the finish line on the BT beginner plan, but I just felt there was something missing.  I like seeing a lot more 3,000-4,000+ swims on the intermediate plan.  And, I *think* there are a bunch more rides longer than 5 hours on this plan, too.

BTW, for what it's worth, I looooooooooove reading about how different people train and how they decide on their training. It's valuable to see how people come to their decisions.  I love how people on the BT threads (here and IMLP thread) are so civil about explaining their reasonings rather than attacking others for asking. It's good stuff (so, thanks to PennState for mentoring this thread, it's be great!)

I actually got a mid day workout in today. Rode 24 miles around my neighborhood. Had to use my tri shorts because the only pair of padded bike shorts that I own tear me up bad. Don't know what the deal was but I had the feet tingling thing again. Kept getting out of the saddle to see if that helped and they still tingled. This was the 1st longer ride since my Oly a couple of weeks ago and I'm glad that I did it. We'll see if I can get in another 24 on Sat. Hope to swim tonight.

Good luck on the 1/2 IM this weekend. Can't wait to hear how it goes.

Hope everyone had a great day!

I did start exactly 20 weeks out...but prior to that i had loosely been following a HIM plan to get me ready..then swiitched over to the IM plan at week 20

PennState - 2010-05-05 2:26 PM There are a lot of different ways to train. Not every method will work for everyone. Some of its trial and error, some of it isn't. The main thing long course triathletes struggle through is injury which is often preventable.

I'm curious to hear more about this.

I started cycling and running since 2005.  I've been injured at one point or another each of those years.  I think my weight, too much too soon, and bad luck have attributed to this.  Seems like once I start posting faster times, I get hurt, take time off, and come back to square one.

I'm asking this because I don't want to spend my next IM chasing the cutoffs, and for once I'd actually like to show up to a race as a legit AG competitor and not pack fodder; putting in the work hasn't been the issue, its staying healthy.

Right now it looks like the next 3 months I'm going to swim 3 hours a week, run 3-5, and cycle 6-11 (one century a month).  While there are plans all over the place for IM's, maintenance is somewhat more confusing.

Planning a nice run after work tonight. I'm taking this whole rest week thing very seriously and was out late with some tri friends drinking margaritas last night. Hadn't done that in a really long time, so I think I need to sweat it off with a good run tonight.

Good question.  I'll have to check my blogs, but I only think I've gone over 4,000 yds once. It's not so much a problem because I think I'm not getting enough swimming...I think the swimming plan on the beginner plan would be just fine, I just don't personally feel like I've had a good workout with 2,000-3,000 yd swims.  It takes me 1500 to warm up sometimes! Maybe it stems from high school/college swimming where 4,000 is an easy day?

I'm broken. DOH!

I've had a dull ache in my side for a couple of weeks.  Last night I was stretching in the water after swimming and...the best way to describe it is....you know when someone bends forward and tears the seat in their pants? Well, I did the opposite, I stretched backwards in a lunge and felt a tearing feeling in the front where the dull ache is!

Can't believe it, but I called the drs office today and I'm getting right in! I was expecting to at least have to wait a couple of days.

I wasn't really concerned until I was driving for work and it hurt to turn and look over my shoulder.  I have a high tolerance for pain (not that you can tell by my blogs and posts!), but I have no tolerance for safety issues.  If this pain is making me less likely to check my blind spot while driving then there's a biiiig problem!

Prob an easy 20 mile ride if my legs are feeling good. Yesterday i tried to run but it was too soon so i packed it in. Although i was pissed i couldnt run, i was actually smiling bc i knew i was doing the "smart" thing. Year ago Dylan would have run...and maybe thats why year ago dylan was frequently injured/sick. I swam well last night and felt close to where i was prior to the HIM..so that was nice

Got a short run in this morning.  Plan on doing a group ride out of the local Tri store this evening probably around 25 miles.  This week is shaping up pretty nice as a good bike week for me.  Planning on getting in one longer ride (50-60) this weekend as well.
