fungi32 - 2010-08-23 3:51 PM Last long run and bike this weekend, bike felt great, run hurt. Ride today felt pretty good considering my long run yesterday. Last week of build and 2 weeks of taper and it is on. Hoping it cools down before the 1/2 and starting to get my usual concerns but the training is there hopefully.

Good to hear!  These 3 weeks will go fast!

scotty930 - 2010-08-23 7:12 PM Ok I think every should see if a doctor is able to do a group visit with all the injuries we have going on here!! On a serious note I do hope everyone does heal up and get back to 100% !!!

I had an olympic race this weekend in brighton, mi. It is about 30 minutes north of Ann Arbor. This event had about 500 people, 400 did the sprint and 100 did the olympic. I managed to place first in my age group and got a great bottle of wine for the prize!! Here is the race report for more:

Hi everyone, been traveling lots for work which automatically correlated into more hours and less training.

I did the Madison OWS like Neal, but the 1.2.  Great race, but I was sore.  It was nice meeting Neal, I practically grabbed him off the sidewalk and asked if he was from BT

Warning:  Before the race on Saturday, I stupidly washed my goggles out in the lake water (were fogging a little).  Anyway, as you all know you don't blink while swimming.  When I took my goggles off I have a massive amount of pain in my right eye.  I skipped the IMWI bike ride and drove back to the doctor (2 hrs drive, 1.5 hr wait).  I found out that there must of been something that got in my goggles that scratched my eye.  Almost the entire bottom half of my right eye was scratched!!!  Very, very painful and cloudy.  Lots of drugs and miserable that day. Always wash with bottled water.

I was already signed up for the Danskin pleasant prairie race on Sunday to do a relay with my sister (I know stupid considering my eye injury, but it was paid for and she was relying on me).  Eye feel good enough race morning, and we took 2nd place!!!

I did promise the doctor I wouldn't swim til Wednesday or Thursday . . .

Wow...I am so sorry Judi...but at least you now know.  That bites...

Saw my primary care doc on Monday.  One set of x-rays and then they called me back for a second set.  The radiologist didn't say on the report whether there was a concern or if there was just something wrong with the films.  The x-ray tech on the second go round said it looked like an 'artifact' on the film to him.  That was a bit of a relief, but still not definitive.  Waiting to hear from my doc on the reading on the second set.  Keeping my fingers crossed that we're not talking stress fracture.  I definitely feel better (although not perfect) so I'm taking that as a good sign.

Sounds like maybe you should try reading the x-rays... You might have better luck determining whats wrong with you than the x-ray tech or doctor!

There must have been something in Lake Monona.  I got kicked and a bunch of water got into my right eye.  I managed to roll over, empty the goggles and get them sealed back up, but my eye was really irritated afterward.  It's still a little red today!

Well, I am going to find the weight room at the gym since the PT guy said he wants me in there.

The assessment was quite thorough, evidently I have almost NO ankle flexion and have overused the gastrocs ....What that means is when everyone else would complain about the quads burning from a workout my gastrocs would be going ballistic.

It may explain part of why I am still struggling with the swim too.  Sigh, I guess my body is not cut out for this sport but I still love it.

Sure your body's cut out for the sport... You just haven't been training it the right way is what I get from it. So that means it's time to start riding the bike and running using those bigger quad muscles that the gastrocs!!!! All in all, I wish you a speedy recovery and stay motivated during this time!!

Thanks. Scotty

Guess it is going to take a lot to get my muscles recorrected to decent use.  Probably a good thing that my body was so uncooperative this season, the HIM would have made me miserable if all that inefficiency was going on!!

Judi, that's an interesting explanation.  Hopefully you can correct the issue and get on with training.

Neal, enjoy the taper.  I start my peak phase next week, so I've got some big weeks ahead of me.  I'm jealous.

I have a 4 hour ride/45 minute run (brick) on tap for Saturday and a 2 hour run and 1:15 bike on tap for Sunday (not a brick - the bike is suppose to be later in the day to keep the legs loose and I usually do it on the trainer so I don't hit hills or deal with wind and kill my legs).

Have a good weekend everyone.

Michelle - I'll keep my fingers crossed that the second reading of your xray is favorable!

I might go for a swim or yoga after work tonight.  Not sure which.  Tomorrow is my marathon training run - cutback week = "only" 12 miles!  Sunday is the Chicago tri.  I'm not racing but debating whether to volunteer with my tri club.  It's such a big tri that it'll be such a looooong day of volunteering.  We'll see if I can get up for it!

That's so interesting.  I guess it's just so important to work your non-tri muscles to prevent imbalances!  Hopefully you can find some exercises to help correct and strengthen those muscles!

No, Missy....Let me explain more.  It means for some reason I lack the flexibility in my ankles to have the right muscle groups engaged and I have been over using the gastrocs.  Typically a gastrocs tear woyld come in a big plyometric move , the PT's example was such as a football player moving to get out of being tackled.  Mine is from overuse since it was wngaged when the quads should have been.

Well I will be finishing out my peak week this weekend with a 2 hour ride on saturday, 2400 yard swim and 2 hour run on Sunday. I did my 3 hour 45 minute bike ride earlier in the week because it fit in better.

Along with that I have new class starting up on line so I am planning on getting some work done for that.

Neal, enjoy that taper!!! Even with your set backs, your still going to rock IMOO!!!

Sounds like your PT was good and thorough.  Hopefully he gets you set up with stretches and strength exercises to get the proper muscles engaging.  If you get everything worked out and corrected this winter I'll bet you'll notice a huge difference when next season rolls around
