ransick - 2010-05-08 9:42 PM I leave for Brazil tomorrow afternoon.  I should start packing tonight instead of tomorrow afternoon.

Did my first ever OWS today.  The details are in my log, overall it went very well though I have a lot of sighting and technique work to do vs. swimming in a pool.

Question, when you get in and get ready to race, do you let water in by pulling at the opening for your arms and legs or just let it work itself in as you move around?

I just let the water work its own way in.

Just saw this link posted elsewhere on the BT site - how very sad for this family: http://blog.al.com/breaking/2010/05/local_cyclist_killed_in_truck-....

On our group ride yesterday, we were advised to ride just to the left of the white line, and not just in the bike lane or shoulder...that it was impossible to predict when/where the lane/shoulder might have debris or end, and that by staying in the driving lane (but hugging that white line) we were much more predictable and visible to cars...and, if need be, always had the shoulder to swerve into if we needed it. Seemed to make sense to me - any thoughts, or anyone disagree with that advice?

That is really tragic and I can see how it easily could have happened --- the cyclist swerved to avoid the dead snake and at that instant the driver came around the curve, was momentarily blinded by the sun coming through the trees, didn't see the cyclist.  So sad for everyone involved.
I very nearly hit a runner with this exact scenario about a year ago --- there is a winding two lane road with little shoulder that is popular with runners and cyclists both because it is so scenic. I came around a curve in the road and the sun was instantly in my eyes.  The runner was kind of out in the road a couple of inches.  I didn't see him at all, and just missed clipped him with my rear view mirror.  Had he been on a bike, I am sure I would have hit him.  I still feel bad about that incident.

In group rides we tend to hug the white line as well. There always s

just reading that (your experience) made my stomach hurt - you can see how easily it can happen. that's why i feel safer in those group rides, i guess - not that it makes us invincible, but i'm hoping it's just easier to see the pack vs. a solo rider, and since it's the tri route it's a "known" riding area.

Good afternoon everyone!
Recovering from a hectic weekend of family responsibilities. Some happy, some not so.
I have to double the workouts this week resulting from life interferences last week.
At least when I am running no one interrupts me.

Yep, searching for that elusive balance.

Happy Monday all.

Glad to hear it!  I have to do the same thing with my workouts but due to illness instead  of family.  My throat has finally receded to the point where I am not wheezing when I breath anymore (it started Friday and I was headed to the doctor today if it wasn't any better).  Now I just have to get rid of all this extra stuff in my head.

This has just been the worst year for illness ever!

At least it is gorgeous outside.  That always makes my training much more enjoyable.  Have a great afternoon all!!

Morning folks. How is everyone today? Rainy here. I had to take my car into the shop for major repairs. It is 13 years old with 180,000+ miles so it is expected. I'll be trainer riding this afternoon.

Anyone out there?

Hi everyone.  I ran outside in the dark in Brazil this morning.  Made me a little nervous.  The plan was to run out to a roundabout with a park in the middle then run back and do some laps at another park on the way back.  Well I made it 7/8 ths of the way around the round about and headed back.  After about a half mile I was like "where is the other park I passed on the way out?".  I turned around and went back to the round about then took the right street.  It doesn't help that I don't carry a map or know the street names.  Probably not too smart.  Oh well, I got a nice run in and I'm still alive.

Congrats on the run - it sounds like quite the adventure.  It sounds like you are much better directionally than I am.  The few times I have tried running in strange places, I always end up where I shouldn't be and having the locals marvel at someone so lost (and/or stupid) to be where I am.

I'm think that the last of my cold is finally departing.  It's just the stuff coming out of my head now so I can get back to training again.  We're not supposed to get rain until late tonight so my butt will be jiggling its way down the road later.

It's nice to finally be moving to a place where my body feels much better working out every day than when I do nothing.

Have a great day all!

The Queen city visit was brief but fun. Got the cousin graduated and celebrated (the best part!)

Um.... knowing street names or carrying a map may be in order in the future! Or maybe just knowing the names of the street you want to be on. Running in the dark gives me the heebie jeebies anyway. Glad it worked out for you.

Pretty cool, eh? Life got in the way of my workouts last week and I ache like an old lady! This week will be redeeming in many ways.

Isn't that a cool place to be (or to get back to)? I knew I'd really turned things around one day a while back when I felt kinda crappy, like that feeling you get when you think you're coming down with something, and my 1st thought was to go to the gym vs. back to the couch...and felt so much better after the workout. Good luck with the run!

Okay folks, I am checking out to go trainer ride. I'll try to check in tomorrow but I may miss. I have to pick the ailing car up in the morning and then have meetings all afternoon THEN get to drive the 4 1/2 hours to Raleigh. Fun and games. If I miss, I'll check in on Thursday evening after teaching classes all day. sigh.

Keep up the good work all.

Hello Ghoulies!  Sorry for the lack of communication...I was on vacation in St. Maarten, but I am back now and training with a vengeance.  A little too much vegeance because I am so sore I can barely move (thanks to lifting weights...BodyPump to be exact).
My hubbie told me that for every pound I lose, I lose 2 seconds off my mile time.  Has anybody heard this?
