Expert 1067 Douglaston, NY | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! CRBURT - 2012-04-03 10:13 PM Im confused? Am I in? It says closed. Please be patient with me. I am really really new, to this site and to Triathlons. I am a true beginner!! I am 35 y/o, Married for 12 years, 2 kids (one 6y/o and one 15 months). I stumbled upon Triathlons by way of a friend I met while biking. I did a duathlon (becuase of drought conditions) last year, a 54 mile bike ride(Waco Skittles) and I have done a 1/2 marathon and a 5k(with jog stroller) and a 10k this year. Just did my first long ride of the year (57miles) last weekend. I love being active and am lucky to have a couple of great friends who have got me all started. My next event is a triathlon in May. Oh, I forgot to mention that I am also training for a figure competition in September. I have an awesome trainer buddy for that. She is really good at getting me into shape and cracking the whip that I admit I need!! My hubby is helping me out with the Cheerleading, and sometimes the tough love. I don't much like the tough love, but hey like I said I can be a weenie
Hiya and welcome to the group! I wouldn't worry too much about being confused. For some of us, that is our default state of being. Hilde is great with a whip if your husband's arm ever gets tired. She says she only slightly enjoys using it but we all know better!! |

Veteran 285 Austin | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! I just have to share a story about how wonderful the MMMers are. In my logs I had mentioned needing to drink a lot of water lately (with the heat) and the wonderful Tammy/Turtle chimed in with some nutrition recommendations. They were super detailed and helpful, but that wasn't enough for her. She sent me a care package with TONS of different samples (including calorie info) of all sorts of things. The thoughtfulness was overwhelming, but going above and beyond seems to be what the MMMers are all about - with the wonderful Hilde as a shining example of this. Thank you Tammy and thank you to everyone for all the help and support you have given over the last months, can't wait to see what this tri season holds for everyone! |

Expert 1067 Douglaston, NY | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! hoffsquared - 2012-04-04 8:45 AM Question: Has anyone had experiences with cool weather in the morning triathlons? Wondering how you handle going from swim to bike when air temps might be in the 40-50's. Could happen at my race on the 14th. I've done this with water temps also at 55 degrees. I froze my man-boobs off on the bike until I dried off and then worked up a sweat because I only wore a trisuit. On the other hand, everyone is right and trying to put clothes on while wet and possibly disoriented from the swim is not high up on my list of futile things to try and do during a race. If you are really worried about it, perhaps you can wear arm warmers under your wetsuit (most wick away moisture so they should dry quickly on the bike) and possibly stick a beanie on your head under your bike helmet. I can tell you that I, at least, was not feeling any sort of cold by the time the run came around. The worst of it will be the swim to bike transition and first couple of miles. |

Expert 972 Falls Church | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! Thanks for the cool weather racing tips! Anyone racing this weekend even if there is no ice cream involved? The water bottle for between my aerobars arrived the other day. Of course, the day after my long ride. I won't have a chance to really test it out until my race. I should probably get on the bike in our little cul-de-sac to test it a bit. Seems like the straw is going to go right up my nose!! But we'll see. Have a nice weekend everyone! |

Expert 1618 Temple, TX | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! I'm pretty sure you can trim that straw to size, Melanie! Mine is right below my chin, I'm always kinda afraid I'll impale myself if I hit a good bump! Love having it right there though, not having to reach for something and take my hands off either the bullhorns or aerobars! |

Mine is right below my chin, I'm always kinda afraid I'll impale myself if I hit a good bump! Love having it right there though, not having to reach for something and take my hands off either the bullhorns or aerobars! I just might have to do that. I specifically chose a bottle with the straw in face design to make sure I would drink AND I wouldn't crash while doing so. Getting the bottle out of the cage on my frame isn't easy - my small bike frame makes it tough to get the bottle in an out. That and it's hard to drink from a bottle while riding. I always feel just of the edge of being out of control. I'm excited about next weekend! Printed out my race checklist. Have a few items still to get like gels and baby powder (to help get the wetsuit on). Will practice transitions one evening this week. Tomorrow will be a longish run. I discovered a women's tri team that offers track workouts every Thursday morning nearby. The catch -- at 5:45am! Still I think I will go this week and see what they are all about. Thursday is their first session. |

Extreme Veteran 495 | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! Yes, Melanie- you can trim the straw, but measure twice, cut once! When I got mine, I think I poked myself in the eye the first time I got on, so I grabbed the scissors and hacked at it- and now it's so short I can barely reach it. Stupid. This afternoon, I did an OWS race at the lake where next weekend's race is held. It's been a loooong time since I was in open water- the town lake is only open for organized events, and the others are 1+ hours away. I did the 2000 meter race - didn't manage to time it or see the clock, but I wasn't last! My new wetsuit did great, and I was able to get out of it afterward without the jaws of life, so I call that a success. I think I'm actually ready for next Sunday's 70.3. As long as I can avoid disaster and disease for the next week, anyway. Two nights ago, I took 1/4 inch off my fingertip while chopping kale. It's got a jaunty little angle now. Hopefully I won't end up with a staph infection from the fetid lake water! |

Veteran 159 Cleveland area, OH | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! Anyone ever use a Garmin foot pod or bike cadence sensor outside? Does it trump the satellite signal? I'd like to use the foot pod outdoors to keep an eye on my cadence, but don't want to goof up the satellite tracking. Same with the bike. Also, what's the difference between the trainer axle and the one that comes on the bike? Would it be really bad to use the trainer one outside on occasion? The weather's a little bipolar here on the southern shores of Lake Erie and I'd rather not be switching out the axle all the time. Thanks in advance! |

Extreme Veteran 495 | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! Michelle, I use the Garmin footpod and cadence sensors, and they don't trump satellite for measuring distance- I think you can tell it to do so if you want, but you have to calibrate it. And yes, you can leave the trainer spindle on the bike to ride around. As far as I know, there's no disadvantage other than maybe a little extra weight and aesthetics. I've been riding around with mine for a year, and I almost never use the trainer; I just like it to be quick and easy when I do! |

Extreme Veteran 495 | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! OK, taper madness has already set in (and I ran 14 miles today, so that can hardly be considered tapering)! I spent the second half of the day cleaning out and reorganizing my pantry- a major undertaking, considering that I am a prolific baker and minor-league food hoarder. I have an inability to pass up free samples, which is why I have a bunch of bars and gels that I don't even like. I'd like to pass these along to one of our newer members who is experimenting with nutrition. Louise, I started to send some of this stuff with your package, but I didn't want it to look like I was dumping my junk on you! The first one to respond here in the forum gets the goodies (sorry, Suzi, US postage only!). |

Expert 1618 Temple, TX | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! Michelle, x2 to all that Tammy said. The cadence meter has nothing to do with the GPS, in fact I have to turn the GPS off when I ride the trainer. And yes, you can use the trainer skewer anytime outside. I actually had an attachment that came with my trainer that allows me to use my original bike skewer, but either one will work just fine. Suzie, it was just a clip art that said Happy Easter. |
