fattyfatfat - 2012-01-13 10:40 AM The doc stuck his finger up my butt!!! No cancer!

Excellent news!!!!!  Reminds me of that referral sheet on my refrigerator for my annual mmmmmammmography.  Yes, we AA cuppers need check ups too!!!

My new running group (Thanks to Kyla) calls that the slammogram.  The things I hear on our runs!

Glad you are listening!! But really, it's a Mammoslam. Close, though!!!

HaHa!!!!  I figured it was just Steve's awesome spelling again! Never heard of a slammogram...but my friends and I call it a mammoslam!!!  (price money vs. prize money)....love you Birdy!

Janet Evans: Sooooo inspiring.... much more so than Dara Torres, IMO!! (But then I've always respected the distance athletes more than the sprinters -- what can I say? I'm biased, but happy to admit it.)

It also shows that if you train like you once did (as much as life permits), you might surprise yourself. That said, I'm not willing to put 15+ hours/week into the pool at this point in my life!!

400: check.

Amazing!!!

For sure. Heck, I'd hit it, too!! (No, you can't watch.) And yeah, saw the 400 results after I read the article. So impressed!! Cannot wait to see how she does in the 800!

Started to look at flights this morning.  Do I bring the kids or not?  It will be Nicholas' first week of school (1st grade) so I'm hesitant based on that alone.  Alexa can miss daycare no problem.  But then there is the issue with the hotel room (reservation at the Concourse Hotel with 2 Queen beds).  They are night owls and, from experience at Timberman, they fought bedtime pretty hard.  Then there is the issue of what would they do all day.   Overall, I really want them there but when I think of the logistics I wonder if its better for them to stay home. Thoughts???

I was going to stay out of this, but I think you brought up an important concern that's been overlooked. Everything else aside, this would make it a no for me.

no.  not overlooked.  i certainly would not elect to propose racing ironman during the first week of school.  but i have to assume, based one her posting this question, christina already had this conversation with her husband and decided to go for it.

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound so grumpy. That's what I get for posting quickly while doing other things! I should have added that my son is about the same age and has a hard time with transitions, so he would have an easier time staying home. That may not be true for other kids.

I checked the three pages since this post, and not one person jumped oh this!!So i will........ Like mother, like son - "my son has a hard time with transitions."

Basement will be done and unpacked by the end of the weekend. Pretty happy with a swim, bike, and run this week. And i did hot yoga today. What a great workout. Scenery isn't bad either.Looks like i missed a good family/ no family debate. All i can say is this- they helped me get there, i want them there to celebrate with me. Yes its a long day, but coulsn't imagine them not being there.

Wow - amazing that someone kept that vid.  The "oh the places you go..." vid was also pretty cool - especially the girl without pants.

I couldn't make it past the goofy guy with his hat on backwards like some kind of a punk...

Wait, I am sure I have many pictures of me looking and acting like that. HAHAHA

Hope everyone has a great weekend. I have to make up some workouts this weekend. So double up tomorrow and Sunday. We finally managed to get some snow. I can't get my dog to come in the house now she loves this stuff.

I will be up and at it for an easy 10km run in the morning. Hoping the roads and sidewalks are clear enough.

I never really lose my MOJO to quit working out, but sometimes I go into a workout less than enthused. This is especially true in areas that I continue to struggle with.  To get back on track all I do is look at my goals for the year.  I won't achieve them, if I don't put in the effort.

PS.  If you haven't set any '12 goals that might be the place to start.Laughing

John-  Love the video, dude, you are still a babyface and look the same!!!

If you watch movies on your vomitron while riding and like the Tour de France, stream "Hell on Wheels" the next time you are messing with netflix.  German documentary that follows the now T-mobile team.  It will change the way you feel about Chamois Cream!!!  Laughing

I keep checking the Ironman St George Volunteer page.  First it said that they would open on Jan 1. Now it says:

"Volunteer Registration for the 2012 Ironman St. George is coming soon! Please check back for updates"

What do y'all think is a great place to volunteer?

Tiana

Not joining in on the taking kids to races debate.  I'll just add that I agree it's what is best for your family.

John and I volunteered at the finish line (6-9) at IMFL this year.  It got cold, and believe it our not it was kinda hard.  Loved it, so many emotions.  But after our shift we went home and went to bed, didn't even go back for the midnight finishers.  We talked about what we thought would be prime volunteer spots - body marking if you want ealry morning an mixing with all the excitement and adrenaline.  Another idea is registration for the following year (day after the race).  Stay away from any type of finish line food job.  I heard plenty of not-so-nice things with that job.

Anyone else consider your children to be little plague factories?  Seriously, they start by getting sick themselves, making you wake up multiple times a night (and as a stay at home mom, I'm usually the one that gets up with them, unless it's the weekend).  That way, they deprive you of sleep.  Your immune system is knocked down and you have no defense when their germs move in on you.  Then, when you feel horrible, they get all their energy back and want to play, play, play.

The only saving grace is, it is now the weekend, so I can trade sleep with my husband.  Training has been almost non-existent this week.

It gets better. Pretty soon, you'll have an immune system of steel.

John (jslacker) and I were talking about swim sets on our group run this morning, so I thought I'd post a callout. Anyone else have some favorites they'd like to share? Maybe we can all get some new ideas!

Here are some of my favorite main sets, to which I add 400-800 yards warmup and 200 yards cooldown. I swim all my sets on fixed intervals, so I get more rest if I swim faster and less rest if I'm slower. Disclaimer: I'm not a coach, I don't have a coach, and I don't play a coach on TV. These are just sets I like.

Endurance:

20 x 100 on an interval that provides ~5 seconds rest and is challenging to make for the full set. Goal is to hold a strong, consistent pace throughout the set without losing form.

ladder set: 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 400, 300, 200, 100 on an X:XX/100 interval that provides ~5 sec rest per 100. Goal is to swim faster on the way back down the ladder.

Speed:

4 x 200 EBEH (1st 200 Easy, 2nd 200 Build, 3rd 200 Easy, 4th 200 Hard), 2 x (4x100 EBEH) - the interval on these should provide ~20 seconds rest after the hard efforts

3 x (5x100 hard), with 50 recovery between sets - the interval for the 1st set should provide ~20 seconds rest, increasing to ~25 and 30 for the 2nd and 3rd sets. Try to hold the same pace for all 3 sets.

Since I just got back in the water after 3 months out and I don't have enough freestyle endurance to swim any of these sets right now, I'm doing shorter sets and mixing in other strokes and short kick sets to give my arms recovery time, which helps me swim longer workouts without having my form totally fall apart.

Quick breaking news...women's Olympic trials, 1.5 miles to go, Desi and Shalane neck and neck, Kara 3 seconds back! So exciting!!! Oooh, sorry to anyone watching tape delay later....off to work...then Niners rooting! Have a great day all. Julia, those swim sets look terrific...at this point I can't believe I ever swam 2500 yds last year let alone 4200...but as usual, somehow we get there, slowly but surely...
