Wednesday Smack Talk - I wanted so badly to sleep in but have stuff going on this evening so I kicked my own a** out of bed and went for a run. It was 28 degrees with heavy fog. My hair was frozen into a big frosty lump and there were icicles on my eyelashes at the end. Very cool morning.

Anyways, here are my January totals (with heavy skew towards the swim):

Bike:        17h 33m 01s  - 308.35 Mi
Run:         12h 20m 15s  -  82.41 Mi
Swim:       16h 00m  -       27650 Yd
Strength:   5h 30m

- Steve

What a good month you seemed to have, too! That's a lot of mileage in the pool - bound to see good results from that. Planning same for Feb?

I missed this one...until someone mentioned it.  I'm surprised that some people have difficulty keeping their legs afloat.  Me, I don't kick (I tried, but it feels weird, and it feels like I slow down more when I kick...my goal for swimming is to improve my kicking skills)....so my legs are easily floating on top.   Is it because someone is much more muscular than me that their legs "sink"?  I have flabby fat legs, so I have more fat in my legs, and I float to the top easily.  Advantage? :-P

My kick has always sucked, DJ... became a challenge for the coaches to figure out what I should change in order to be able to move forward while kicking, but I've always been an upper-body swimmer... PT has had me really working on glutes, and I think it's actually improving my kick... I can do kick sets now, without flippers, and not cheat to finish   Even when not doing exercises or the strength training specifically, I try to really focus on my glutes periodically while running (tho it kinda feels like I'm trying to hold a stick up my butt), and in spin, and I'm starting to feel the difference in the pool.

January totals:

January's totals:
Bike:6h 00m  - 86.37 Mi
Run:8h 37m 30s  - 51.42 Mi
Swim:1h 25m  - 1900 Yd
Strength:3h 55m
Stairmaster:30m

My weakness is the swim and it shows in my training.  My goal for February is to get to the pool more often and get more yards in.  I made some progress in January, but I need more time to get up to speed.

I want to continue to build my distance on the bike and run - my gym has a 3 hr spin class planned for late Feb.

Good luck to everyone.

I think i am going to take everyone's advice and try aquajogging starting next week. I found a water running exercise regime by Pete Pfitzinger  that seems pretty intense http://pfitzinger.com/labreports/water.shtml Only problem is the pool is a pain in the butt to get to - 25 minute drive to Anchorage or in town but late in the evening. I will let y'all know how it goes.

Lost 4.5 pounds last month - hoping to lose 2 more pounds this month.

Well, I have 2 things to report...

1.  My hamstring & knee did not respond well to last weeks upping of training g volume.  Feels better now & hopefully gonna go to spin Saturday & try again.

2.  The snow is coming daily.. Shovelling is becoming cardio!!!  If it was the 4th event in a Tri, I'd be podium!!!

I like that everyone is posting their January stats and goals for February.  I will give it a whirl:

January - Swim 10,350 yards  |  Bike 62.65 miles   |  Run 62.87 miles

Interesting that I actually RAN more than I biked in January. My Feb goals are:

February - Swim 20,000 yards | Bike 300 miles | Run 80 miles (originally had 100 but it's a short month)

I am also going to really work on nutrition and rein in the "boredom eating" and hope to be at 154 lbs by the end of February. Currently at 158.

Yeppers... "sandblasting" is one step away from "Jackhammering!" .. but we are training by "Any means necessary!" When it comes closer to race day I have had to initiate "Black Ops" to get myself moving! Power set done! Man that was hard. ANT+ Stick misbehaving again... will post stats late evening after Cadance HOUR of POWER!

I am a fan of Pete Pfitzinger!  I hope it helps Robin, even if you only get a session or 2 a week, it may be enough to save your tri season!

Everyone posting your numbers is a great idea!  Nice work everyone too!  Don't worry what yours looks like compared to anyone elses, we are all training for different length races and are at different stages in our tri training!

I'm certainly gald to see that Carla most definately seems to motivated this last week.  Keep training like that and you'll do great at your next IM.Laughing

I'm happy about my January training.  Probably the best month I've had in all three since I started training.

Bike - 210.89 miles  (Missed my training goal because I had a fever Monday and missed my long ride)

Swim - 24225 yds (Best month by over 10,000 yds.  Master's swim is really paying off)

Run - 58.2 miles (Not my biggest month but I did finish my first HM)

I lost 9 pounds and feel great!  I'm using the same app as DJ (Lose it).  Not sure if it is exactly accurate but it keeps me accountable.  The first 4 months of the year are by far my heaviest work load.  If I can keep this up and do well in May (Florida 70.3), then I think I will be able to do much better than originally thought I would in Nov.(IMFL)

February goals are to stay on track with my training program and weight loss.  I want to be at 180 by Florida 70.3.  I'm right at 200 now, so I this rate I'm going to be right where I want to be. Training program calls for 17,750(swim), 272.4 miles(bike) and 68.8miles(run).

Great work in January Wesley.Keep up the great work..I'm debating on doing Florida 70.3.Question for you how many Kcal are you consuming a day? What are you finding is helping with your weight lost....I'm hovering 195 and can't seem to get the weight to move off so I'm curious what is working for you..Thanks in advance for the advice...Goal weight 165 -170...

I found an interesting article on timing of nutrition and its impact on training and weight loss on face book.  It was a link from LAVA magazine on the IRONMAN page.  I will see if I can find a link and post it here.

Good stuff.  Some folks are fasting from 8 p.m. to noon the next day so all their calories are focused around workout and recovery.  I haven't started the long stuff over 2 hours per much so it hasn't been needed, but I will.

I think we can make room for another!

Cool!!! Thanks! Sorry I'm so late everyone

NAME: Meulen/Brian

STORY: I'm soon to be 38 years old. I had an athletic background in HS/College. I played baseball, basketball and golf in HS and played golf in College. I weightlifted through College and ended up pretty bulky. That bulk turned to fluff pretty quick after that. I was basically your typical party animal kid through my twenties. I got married at 24 and continue to pack on lbs. till I was in my 30's. I ended up being north of 215 (I quit weighing after that in denial! ). At 6' 1" with a small frame I was pretty pudgy. It was about 4-5 years ago I finally said enough. I got back into the gym and started trying to lose weight. I then bought a hybrid bike to ride around the block because I was too heavy for my knees to run much. It was about 4 years ago I did my first indoor tri. I could barely swim across the pool! I met some poeple mountain biking after that and they sucked me into mtb racing for a year. The following year I came back to tri's and have been here ever since. My first outdoor (real tri) was Xterra Ft. Custer 3 years ago. I've done several since then, the biggest being Racine 70.3 last season. Through it all I now weigh 170lb and have been as low as 163 on race day!!

FAMILY STATUS: I'm married to my AWESOME and BEAUTIFUL wife Anne Marie. She's in my cornor at every event and she even does some training and racing with me. Couldn't ask for anything more!

THIS YEAR'S RACES: In 2011 I cut down the number of races I did from the prior year and focussed on two races, the Illinois marathon and Racine 70.3. Both were firsts for me in these distances. The marathon went rather well for me, but Racine beat me up! I'll be looking for revenge on this race this year.

2012 RACES: So far I'm signed up for an early half marathon in May and Racine 70.3 in July. I'll be adding a couple Oly's and maybe an Xterra or two along the way for training. Work has gotten significantly more demanding for me lately so my dreams of training for an ironman are on the wayside.

WEIGHTLOSS: I'm definitely one that struggles with weight. I just lost 10lbs to get back to 170. I'd like to be more close to 160 and possibly under this year. I've been using livestrong.com to log my food and excercise.

WHY I'M HERE: I've recently been hitting some walls in my training that I could use all the help and extra motivation to get over. I was in GoGoGo's group a couple years ago and he mentioned this group to me.

Thanks again for taking me in!

BTW....I wanted to say I REALLY enjoyed that MTB vid!! My wife and I go to Vegas a couple times a year. We found McGhies bike shop last year and rented bikes for a road ride through Red Rock. I wish I could convince her to mountain bike! I'd love to do that out there!!

Anyways, here are my January totals (with heavy skew towards the swim):
Bike:        17h 33m 01s  - 308.35 Mi
Run:         12h 20m 15s  -  82.41 Mi
Swim:       16h 00m  -       27650 Yd
Strength:   5h 30m

- Steve

What a good month you seemed to have, too! That's a lot of mileage in the pool - bound to see good results from that. Planning same for Feb?

Thanks Marla...  I'm hoping to keep it going for Feb... we'll see. Starting next week, I'm planning on doing at least one OWS session per week.
