You could also email the race director, explain your situation, and see if you can register & rack your bike race day morning. Depending on the race, I've been able to do that for some.

Kuma - 2013-01-16 10:44 PM Sigh. I need advice. A good friend told me today that he's getting married on this upcoming September 7, Saturday, the day before the Nations Tri - one of my planned "A" races. The wedding will be more or less local, though about 2 hours drive away. I dont know what time that day the wedding will be. I'm ok with going to the wedding and not drinking and even sneaking out of the reception early, but with the travel time to and from, I'm worried about having enough time to do all my race prep and get enough sleep, even then. Bike racking lasts from 11 am to 8 pm on Saturday, the day before the race. I have already paid the $190 entry fee, and their website says it is non- refundable and non-transferable, on pain of losing my USATri license. Some of you more experienced types must have had a serious conflict with an important race arise like this before. How did you handle it? I have to say that "non-refundable and non-transferable" is a real when the entry fee is almost 200 bucks and real life happens. Any thoughts?

You entry is non-transferable to another individual and USAT will impose a ban for transferring (its a huge liability issue).  While I think a lot of races would let you rack on race morning, Nations is a HUGE event and a little bit of a cluster on race morning, so I'm not sure they're going to let you rack on race morning.  I would e-mail the race organization asking for options.  It may be that they'll let you rack early the day before.

You can also see if you can transfer the registration to another competitor group event.

This is a generally tough situation with races generally.  I lost over  $4000 in race entries in 2012  because I got injured (and had to miss IMNYC, which I purchased through a charitable foundation slot).

rizer22 - 2013-01-16 7:09 PM And that's the reason Sonic Endurance Rocks!!!!Scott, just noticed you have a level 3 Cycling license. Can you tell us about that?

Honestly I did it to boost my credentials for getting into the USAT Coaching clinics.  There was some interesting science on hydration and A TON of info on para cycling that while not all together applicable was interesting.  Shockingly the doping section left a lot to be desired.  LOL.

Oh and I figured out I know NOTHING about track cycling.

Last year USAT changed is policy for getting into coaching clinics.  Rather than a first come first served (you would literally need to wait at computer for when active.com registration opened and clinic would sell out in seconds) there is now an application process and USAT selects who can attend the clinic.  Strangely one of the biggest factors USAT looks at is whether you currently coach triathletes, so USAT is essentially saying you need to coach athletes without being certified in order to get your certification.

Yep.  Encouraging people to coach w/o liability insurance seems a bit backwards, but that's what you get with national orgs

Matt-First off good luck with the logistics but I will say this. Your friends wedding will only come once, we hope . The Nations Tri will be there next year. That is of course if the logistics doesn't work out. I am pretty sure though if you explain they might work something out for you. Maybe they would let someone else rack your stuff? If that is an option let me know I could do it for you. I might volunteer for that one anyway.

30 minute recovery ride on the trainer, 2300 yards in the pool which is the most since my last HIM in September and 20 minutes of core work.

Were you trying to qualify for the age group nationals? If not, and you can't swing the race, have you checked out the Columbia Tri? I am from Columbia and have a friend who has done it and said it was good. Not the same month but its approximately the same distance.

A local racing company came out with their 2013 schedule this week, and they added a second triathlon in my neighborhood (we live right on Lake Erie)!!!!  It's a sprint and timing is about a week off from when I technically should be racing, but I think I have to do it to support it.  I did the other one the last 2 years.  So cool

Registration hasn't opened for the June or July clinics.  I decided waiting until after IMTX and this baby thing has settled into a groove would be best.

As an FYI -- Nations and Columbia are about as different as can be course wise.  The Columbia bike course is HILLY.  Very HILLY.  Nations is pancake flat.  Columbia is a great race, just realize its very different from Nations.

Bummed. Had bag packed, ready to hit the pool at the Y...Swim meet, pool closed. So I was going to go to the other Y in Portland....Swim team. So that means I have to get up extra early tomorrow, which was to be a rest day, hit the Y as soon as the pool opens (530) so that I can be finished in time to be at work at the hospital by 8, which on Fridays is an hour away.

Thanks everyone very much for your great suggestions on this.  The good news is that there are still several months to go until the race.  If it doesn't work out that I can rack during the normal time and still make the wedding, I'll ask for a dispensation to rack before the official time on Saturday, or, if that doesn't work and Larkin decides to volunteer, explore asking him for assistance (with a case of beer of his choice as my sincere thanks!).

As it happens, I'm also already looking at the Columbia event, and am just waiting for some other real-life scheduling to be worked out before I jump in there also.  I love hills (riding up them, at least), so it may be that that event is well-suited for me anyway.  There's also the Olympic distance version of the Savageman the weekend of September 15, so that may also work.  Thanks again everyone for your advice.
