Good morning Manatees! I kept up with the Manatee chatter over the weekend, via email, but haven't read the RRs yet. Looking forward to reading those!

My weekend was pretty good, considering. I got my training sessions in, in spite of having housepests. Even the visit went better than I anticipated. Maybe the fact that I did a 3 hour bike ride while they went site-seeing was part of the reason it went well Wink

Now that I am back to the work week I need to figure out how to get my swim session done tomorrow! I have to be at work early so my normal Wednesday routine won't work. Getting to the pool earlier isn't really an option as the lanes are full from 4:30 to 5:00 (it looks like a scene from "Cocoon"). I can't swim after work because Wednesday is small group. So my options are 1) go straight from the pool to work, but I worry about having everything I need for work and swim, and I don't like to leave the dogs locked up that long, or 2) re-arrange the session with Thursday's bike or run but the locker room is closed this Thursday morning and I don't know how crowded the pool is in the afternoon or 3) skip the swim session Yell

Happy Tuesday (Wednesday) all!

Option 1 sounds like the best.  The dogs will be OK with a rare day of being locked up longer than usual.  Laughed at the 'Cocoon' reference!! Tongue out

Erin - thanks for the pics, it looks like you had a wonderful time at the beach and in the sun and warm!!  And you went hiking as well?  Awesome!

I'd post a pic of our current weather mess but everyone would get depressed and sad.  It was supposed to rain (yuck) but it snowed instead (yay!) but at 35*F it's just a little too warm for it to stay, so now it's melting into a soggy, salty mess (no offense to our Salty).  It's foggy and grey and blech out and...oh wait, I wasn't going to depress you!

I've been studying (obsessing) about the elevation info for Oceanside too. I love having the info, though!

As for on course nutrition, Oceanside has Powerbar PERFORM. It doesn't state which flavor and I can't find the stuff at any local stores so I might have to order some off the interwebs so I can try it out. I've been trying the gels and chomps to see which flavors I can tolerate to supplement the waffles I'll be bringing along.

Oh yeah, that's their drink. I think it only comes in lemon lime (Yuck, I don't know why everyone does that!?!)

Buuuut, perhaps I can get you some. It's not something we generally hand out but I think we might be pushing it a little more heavily this year.

If I get some in my hands I'll send it your way.

If you guys have a couple hours to spare ever (no, I'm  not kidding.) Read this article: http://www.nytimes.com/projects/2012/snow-fall/#/?part=tunnel-creek

It's a tragic story (and today is the anniversary) but is one of the most engaging interactive pieces I have ever read. In my opinion, it's a huge sell for the digitization of, well, everything.

Well worth reading, interactive-ness notwithstanding. But it's an amazingly well-wrought piece.

How are you gonna write your book without video and how am I supposed to finish mine without all the crazy cool pics?! Here we have our answer ...

Asalzwed - 2013-02-19 2:29 PM How do you all handle massage in your training schedules? Do you do it after hard days? Or do you just fit it where you can?

The first step is to find a massage therapist that you like and trust.

Then I schedule them kind of on an as needed basis and let her know when I have an event coming up and let her influence the schedule.  I had one on the 7th so nine days before Myrtle Beach and I wanted one this week but my work schedule did not allow it so I have one schedule for next week (she has not evening availability this week and I can't take a long lunch this week).  I feel pretty good from the marathon so no worries.  With the Gator half coming up next month, I want to be sure that there is nothing lingering.

I figure that maintenance is less expensive (and more fun) than fixing me up in PT.

Salty, I'm sure that you kind of know when things aren't quite right and your stretching is just not quite cutting it.  It's at the moment that I would get on the phone to make an appointment.  Then, as the as an A race gets closer (Boston, Milwaukee), I'd let your trusted person influence the schedule.

I fit him in whenever and wherever

Honestly, looking at YOUR schedule, that would be wherever you can. (Mine too, for that matter). If you can afford it and have a really skilled therapist/s, a "flushing" massage post-hard-weekend or races can--in my experience--make a huge difference in recovery. Conversely, a few days after a hard weekend/week/set of sessions/long race is an excellent time for deep-tissue / sports massage.

Full disclosure, I don't really stretch. Also full disclosure I'd seriously be doing this 99% for pleasure (I don't want any of that painful crap.) Another full disclosure, I picked the place I am going to go for the following reasons:

A. The therapist was HOT

B. Location (a few blocks from my house)

C. I got a free one but also they don't need a referral (not sure how that works...) and my insurance will cover it (apparently) so...

So, while I think you give really good advice. I am doing this azz-backwards.

I had one on Monday, after Sunday's race. He stunk!

So, the best thing I have done at this point is get every coupon/deal I can find and start working my way through therapists. I have one that I kinda like and there are a bunch more to try. If you find one you like, cling to it them a kid to a candy bar. Location, availability, knowledge, ability, etc all matter.

Asalzwed - 2013-02-19 2:29 PM How do you all handle massage in your training schedules? Do you do it after hard days? Or do you just fit it where you can?

I had one on Monday, after Sunday's race. He stunk!

So, the best thing I have done at this point is get every coupon/deal I can find and start working my way through therapists. I have one that I kinda like and there are a bunch more to try. If you find one you like, cling to it them a kid to a candy bar. Location, availability, knowledge, ability, etc all matter.

Literal stench?

No, just an inability to make my legs happy.

I'm starting to transition into specitivty training for Boston.

Got the details on what is on course. Powerbar (that makes that part easy) and of course, Gatorade (the yellow crap, boooooo.) I am not a fan of that flavor of Gatorade  I need to buy some and learn to like it as I won't be carrying liquid and I will need it (and water of course.)

I've also made a folder with so much info about the course elevation changes it will make your head spin.

This kind of information exists , specific to EVERY hill:

"Elevation (top): 51 meters (167 feet)
Elevation (bottom): 15 meters (49 feet)
Length: 951 meters (.59 miles)
Avg. Grade: 3.8%
Steepest Grade: 5.6%"

God bless the internets!

My previous PT also hot got it as he was a triathlete and accomplished swimmer. The new guy hotter is an ex Aussie rules team physio he knows how to get you loose enough to play the match and repair after! He inflicts so much pain I don't go often. When I'm crying he just says HTFU you wanna be an ironman!
