Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013: CLOSED (exc/ Pop Tart bribes) Originally posted by Asalzwed I got a PR on a tougher 6K course and scored 3rd on my team (helping my chances of makibv the A team for nats.) Watching a teammate put a needle through her toenail to drain the blood. Ahhh running. More later... Congrats! Yay! Yum! |

My friend Chuck finished in about 15 hours plus....He must have had some problems cause his last 3 bike splits were horrible. He's a strong cyclist and his last 3 bike splits were averaging 16.5---13.5.....11.6 mph NOT the way Chuck rides at all. Glad he was able to finish though. He has IMFL next month which he has to go to as he got into Kona on the Legacy program and IMFL would have been the 10th IM for him. He said he might aqua-bike it if he's not recovered from Kona. |

Expert 1452 Troy, MI | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013: CLOSED (exc/ Pop Tart bribes) Just popping in to say hello and WAY TO GO to our RACING MANATEES!!! I read through a bit and you guys are amazing!!
I am struggling with run:walking. It will be a long haul back to even where I was but that is what I get for letting life force me to have a year off, jumping back in to the deep end and then getting injured because I had very little base. It sucks to get old and come to a reality that maybe you really do have to work to maintain, let alone improve. Long journey ahead but I have no goal in sight so that journey is a little aimless right now. I am completely star struck today. My massage therapist was the 2nd US female (by seconds) to finish the Chicago Marathon. She was 10th woman overall and had a 20+ second PR with a 2:32:35. She is just fricking amazeballs and I adore her! I think I have a total girl crush but more for the way she can work my muscles. I love, love, love this woman!!! I just saw her for a neck/shoulder issue on Monday and we chatted all about Chicago and her race plan. I am so happy for her!! I hope all is well with all of you! Those on the disable list, heal quickly!! Have a great week!!! |

Master 6834 Englewood, Florida | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013: CLOSED (exc/ Pop Tart bribes) Yesterday I rode a route that I haven't been on in a while. Manasota Beach Rd. There is a Strava segment on there that is held by Jesse Thomas, so I have no chance. However, I did check since I PR'd this piece and I currently hold down 86th place. Just 3 seconds less and I take 85th from Hands-Marie. I'm gunning for you in a couple of weeks, buddy! |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013: CLOSED (exc/ Pop Tart bribes) SWIM BREATHING 1. Breathe when you need to. 2. Be able to breathe both sides. 3. Keep calm when you get snootfuls of water instead of air. That's pretty much it. Most of the good swim plans out there have some breath control work--the KEY as others have also pointed out is CONTROL. The focus is on stroke rhythm, good deep breathing, managed heart rate. |

October 12-13 I think the DL is quite long enough, thank you. Especially in your family! Notice that you are the only one with an "and family" tacked on! Speaking of the DL... Yanti, if you are doing 1+ hour runs does that mean that you are relinquishing your "DL Headliner" title or are these simply, uh, ill-advised workouts? Never, no, and both. Wait, what? They aren't runs ... all powerwalks. Okay, sometimes in great glee I have to break out into a little trot, but otherwise, it's straight-up smokin-fast granny style hoofing. That said, it's all probably still ill-advised. Mainly because, as usual, I'm advising myself. |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013: CLOSED (exc/ Pop Tart bribes) Originally posted by switch Also, how does Kingsley know when to turn in the pool? How does he swim OWS? Also, Ben, I'm assuming as part of Masters you work your flip turns and streamline pretty hard. Do you ever purposefully drop these and do nowall sets to simulate more OWS stuff? I've seen some sets for triathletes written that way, and just am wondering about the impact the wall has on OWS conditioning. I know I certainly feel it (read that as "dread it") when we go from SCY to LCM. Seriously? Where? It's about time for a good dogpile The answer is heck no. A really good push-off from the wall with streamline is an awesome, every-length opportunity to improve your body position in the water, feel for eliminating drag, and swim-specific strength conditioning. For vision-impaired in competitive pool swimming, there are folks (tappers) standing on the end with long sticks with a bit of foam on the end. They tap your head as soon as it reaches the T-end of the black line on the bottom of the pool.
Open water is trickier. Whenever possible, in races that have/allow it (many do even for sighted swimmers, especially swims that may have any part taking place in low-light/night times) Kingsley has a paddler, and he can see/hear the paddler if the paddleboard/canoe/kayak is right next to him. When he doesn't have a paddler, or the paddler sucks, he really just has to depend on hearing, his stroke, where sunlight is coming from, and his feel of the water conditions to keep his stroke and path straight to where he wants to go. If there's something giant in the distance/horizon that creates a very stark contrast against a bright sky he might be able to see that. It's pretty amazing what he can do with the tiny bit of vision he has. I mean, he rides a bicycle to get around ... even in the dark to get to training. He's got the equivalent of high-beams on his bike, though, so at least he can see general shapes in the road and the difference between road and not-road. He also bangs into a lot less shyte than I do. I pretty much navigate by banging into and bouncing off things. |
