ceilidh - 2010-05-18 9:20 AM I saw that Kendra and Stacy dropped by.   We need to hear more from our Queen and resident librarian!

Nice to be missed.  We are gearing up for summer reading and decorated the branch last Friday.

Sorry to hear that you aren't feeling well Robin.
Feel better soon.  Traveling really doesn't help, but a gal must work.

Thanks, at least when I finally get to my destination it will be at the beach rather than the usual industrial setting!

ironannekidd - 2010-05-18 10:33 AM New pain medicine - I called my doc because my arthritis medicine really isn't doing anything anymore. I was thinking she would just put me on something else, the less pills I have to take the better.

Instead of changing meds, she adds one. A barbiturate/analgesic pain med. It may have some side effects. UH YEAH!

I took the first one last Thursday at 6 pm. I was ready to go to bed by 7:30, I was totally out of it.

I'm supposed to take it 4 times a day, but I'm not getting up during the night to take a pill. So I took the next one at 6 Friday morning. I got to work no problem, but I was totally out of it while I was here. I could not think straight to save my life, and I was very sleepy. So I left around 11.

I called my sister on the way home, otherwise I'd have put my head down on the seat next to me and taken a nap. I get home and I'm still on the phone with her. She emailed me this later because I didn't remember it all.

She asked me where I was. I told her I was sitting in the driveway. She asked what I was doing. I told her I was looking for my cell phone. She said "what are you doing?" I told her I was looking for my phone. She said "what are you doing?" I said looking for my phone. She told me to go in the house, call my doc, then lay down.

My doc said things should settle down in a few days, but I could back off and only take it 3 times a day, which I've done. I took a 2.5 hour nap then. I have had a few similar episodes over the weekend, I think things are getting better though.

When I'm taking the pill though I feel nothing, anywhere. I don't think straight either. I was doing search and rescue training with my friends over the weekend. My one friend put me in a spot and marked me on the gps instead of letting me find my own hiding spot. I don't know how many times she told me to sit there, don't go anywhere, just sit there until they found me. Although we were training, so if I'd have wandered off I'm confident I'd have been found... eventually.

That sounds plain scary!

This is the first time I thoroughly read that - Ann(e) - I would get off of that crap immediately!

That sounds scary!

Yeah... side effects are not good, but when I take it my back doesn't hurt. I was able to play on the floor with my kids over the weekend, then get up off the floor with no pain. I'm sort of torn.

I'm going to agree with everyone else.  Scary stuff!!!!
I'm going to agree with the others on this too. If you are trying to function and you can't even remember what you are doing let alone did, this is not a medicine to take. Surely it has a Do not Drive or run heavy machinery warning label on the bottle. Maybe you better read up on this prescription.

Um... yeah... the bottle was covered in red labels.

Don't take with alcohol
Don't operate heavy machinery
May cause nausea
May cause dizziness or drowsiness
May cause dependency

All the good ones!

Ann, I'm going to jump in as well.  It's ok to give meds a few days and tinker with dosage to find what's right for you.  It is also ok to try other meds to see if they work.  Managing pain is a tricky and individual challenge.  In the end, though, a barbiturate is a barbiturate.  It should NEVER be taken with alcohol. Choose one and only one.  I have been known to ignore that particular warning with other drugs, but not barbs.

Hope you're feeling better.

Are you on a benzo? I didn't think barbs were used that often anymore because of the effect on the liver...I guess you will eventually get used to them...but all the stories I've heard about benzos/barbs pretty much go: "ya so I took the med and was just out of er..." They use them as a pre-operative drug to calm patients down because it causes anterograde amnesia I think...So you just don't really care that you are going into surgery. I've heard them used for pain control too, but more post-op for a few days...But I could be completely wrong...:S Still seems like you are having a hard time with them!

Well, I am still in the office.  Most of the video here would be coronary angiograms and the books a bit heavy on thrombin and platelets.  Fortunately I am leaving early to go to PT and am not coming back.  I think I will curl up on the sofa with a book when I get home.   What happens, happens.

I don't remember the name of it, I can look it up when I get home.

I can see how it would have a very calming effect.

Kim - I wanted to tell you that I got a compliment on my swim cap last week at the college pool. I was there around lunchtime and it was only open for faculty and staff and an older woman in the locker room told me she saw it while I was swimming and liked my cap.

Melindy - if you're around in an hour I'll post the name of the drug I'm on when I get home.

I will call my doctor this afternoon. I like the way it makes me feel. I have no pain, and I'm generally in pain all the freakin' time. I will make the call though.

Ok - the name of the drug is Fioricet and the bottle says to take it 4 times a day.

Here's the thing. I called my doc's office because my arthritis medicine isn't working. They called in this prescription, but I only got 30 pills, no refills, and it says to take 4x a day.

I called the doc's office going at this as my arthritis medicine isn't working and you only gave me a weeks worth of pain medicine. I think something else needs to be done. The person on the other end of the phone says I'm only to take it as needed for pain.

I told her I am in pain all of the time and the bottle says to take 4x a day. She looks me up on the computer and says that it was supposed to read as needed. Nice.

I still tell her that I'm in pain most of the time and need a more long term solution that what was prescribed. I now have an appt Thursday afternoon to talk to my doctor.

Hmmm...I looked that drug up. Its a combo drug--its basically a barbituate, acetominophen and caffeine and indication for tension headaches and pain.

Hope you get it all sorted out on Thurs!

kcarroll - 2010-05-18 3:39 AM Morning everyone.  It got quiet here.  Hopefully everyone is busy training or doing something fun.  I was able to get an appt with my PT this afternoon to check out the knee.  The swelling has gone down a bit and it's stiff but there's no pain.  All good.  I won't be around this morning but will check in later today. It's going to be a gloomy rainy one here in NJ.  Blah.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for your PT appointment today Kim! And for some better weather for you. At least you're on a forced recovery so you're not missing any training days, right?
