Fred Doucette - 2011-01-30 2:39 PM OK ran outside for my long run. Just couldn't stomach another long treadmill run.

Nice run and bike today Fred! I find I feel lucky every time I run outside this winter with pretty clear roads and good weather as it hasn't been all that common.

I ran some outside today too Fred.  Felt good to do that.

Going to see a talk tonight by Bob Seebohar, "Nutrition Periodization for Endurance Athletes and Metabolic Efficiency Training: Teaching your body to burn more fat".  Looking forward to hearing what he has to say.

Good luck finding solutions to those injuries Kathy.  Wish I had some useful advice to offer.

Keeping up with this thread is a full time job! I'll try to catch up tomorrow on my rest day.

We had a great weekend in Austin. Took our youngest (18) to visit UT on Saturday. Ran the Austin 3M Half Marathon today and PRed. I'm pleased with my effort considering the amount of time off for illness the last month. Now it's time to focus on training for HIM and IMTX this spring.

. Rob, I found that after a lot of treadmill running this January, that my outdoor running legs were not quite up to snuff. Outdoor running is just harder I guess. Thoughts?

For me, outdoor running seems tougher on my lower legs, easier on my hammies.  So far anyway.  We'll see what happens as we get more warm weather.

I definitely think that running outside is harder than the treadmill. I guess that would be physically not mentally, I struggle mentally with the treadmill.

Big month for me for riding.

Bike:19h 27m 15s  - 569.65 KM
Run:9h 43m 52s  - 119.03 KM
Swim:6h 39m 30s  - 17651.8 M

Running volume is starting to increase, but I still need to find some more time in the pool - although I am trying to stretch the workouts so they are at least 2000yds per session (nothing for most of you, I know).

I've increased my overall volume for the each of the past few weeks, so this week I'll scale things back a bit, plus it's the last week of the cycling program so the load and intensity is less this week, and then next week is test week again.

Fred - enjoy your testing this week.  Tongue out

Super January numbers everyone! Neil, I think you said this was the most biking you've done ever... awesome.

Hope everyone's niggles/injuries get better (this is always the little beast nipping at our heels, isn't it, when we do this much training)

Did anyone read article in Sunday New York Times, in week in review section, by Frank Bruni, titled "The Ripped and the Righteous"...it is online (sorry my computer skills are horrific and I don't know how the set up the link Cry).

I saw my PT today and have made progress but still have a ways to go with full knee extension which is needed to do more strength work.

He said when I ride I'm basically riding with 1 leg no wonder my power is down.

He is confident that I will gain more run speed working on body alignment, strength and correcting bio mechanics than I could run training right now.

I saw a PT back in 2008 who was able to get my pelvis is right position and instantly I ran a minute a mile faster. Problem is that her work didn't stick and I went back into my old body movement patterns. Goal this time is to make changes permanent.

I need to put rehab and PT first right now as that will long term help me most and don't do any extra running right now.

It will take about 5-7 weeks to gain quad strength back after I can start doing heavy quad strength work which earliest will be 7-9 weeks from now.

January is in the books for me:

Swim      30,150 yards           12hr 45m

Bike        464.29 miles            24h  47m

Run         91.3 miles                13h 37m

Sports (Yoga)                            6h 35m

Good month for me-had a bit of a "new bike" bump.  Right calf flare up kept me from breaking 100 on the run but I decided to do the smart thing, for a change, and bag the last 2 runs of the month.  Feels better today but I'm going to hold off until Wed. to test it out (big picture right?). Thanks to all for the encouragement over the last month.  Hope everyone has a healthy February.

January's totals:
Bike:12h 48m 01s  - 254.17 Mi
Run:19h 35m 18s  - 160.27 Mi
Swim:7h 29m 53s  - 22650 Yd
Broomball:3h 00m

Not bad numbers I guess.  I backed off my run build in the fall/early winter a bit and started up with swimming again.  Bike was all on the trainer and all pretty intense.  For Feb, I'd like to bump swim to 12 hours, bike to 16 and lose as little run as possible...hopefully still hit 150 miles, with some intensity in there.

My

January's totals:

Bike:

16h 55m  - 338.82 Mi

Run:

14h 28m 31s  - 113.47 Mi

Swim:

9h 49m 15s  - 33250 Yd

Strength:

6h 55m

Not to bad considering December I was still recovering from my Blood thing.

I finished my recovery week on Saturday with a good day.  On Sunday I started my next build phase with a decent CT ride.  I am starting to get on board with the lower cadence (rpm's) on the bike. I have always had a higher cadence spin which I think comes form my cycling race days.  Criterium racing I think set this natural cadence, it did me well.  Now maybe time for some change.

On the rationality that I'm doing this for fun as well as health, I confess that I manipulated my workouts the last two days to produce the resulting nice round numbers below:

January's totals:
Bike:15h 58m 46s  - 260 Mi
Run:9h 13m 02s  - 60 Mi
Swim:9h 32m 30s  - 32000 Yd

This is probably the most balanced month of training I have ever had, and although my participation in the group has been time limited, it has been a great motivator for me in terms of making me thing harder about how I approach training, attaining balance between exercise and the rest of life, and keeping focused and priorities straight.
My goals for February is simple; string together two balanced months in a row.
Thanks folks
