Congrats to our two IM finishers this weekend! It takes some guts not only to race an IM but to race a new course where you don't benefit from reading about past years, both David and Jimmy, you guys put up some solid efforts, and I was able to check the live feed, watch you come in and you both looked great! Congrats

Cant wait to hear some RR from this weekend!

Traumatizing day for me today. Started off mowing the yard before my ride. Accidently ran over a young bunny, freaked out and saw the mother come out of the hole after the incident had happened to see her poor little one lay on the ground motionless. Tried to get on the bike for my long ride with 3-4 hours planned. Clear skies and warm made for a great start. 2 hours in and it became overcast, then 30 minutes later it was as dark as night I was in the middle of fields and could see lighting and storms forming. I was somewhat close to my car so I started a TT effort ride back to the car. Got to my car and as soon as I did the downpour of rain started with limited visibility. Got home to find out a couple of tornados touched down in the La Crosse area not far from our house. No damage, but a close call. Glad to be home safe and sound, was not looking forward to the option of laying in a ditch somewhere waiting for that storm to pass.

I actually ended up racing that 5k this weekend.  Didn't have a PR in me, but ended up 5th overall and 2nd woman (small fieldSmile).  The whole reason for the 5k was Pre-eclampsia and HELLP awareness, so I was entered as a "survivor."  I was surprised when they told me I was the first place "survivor."  I don't dwell much on what happened to me, but it didn't take much to bring a lot of emotion to the surface.  I just feel so grateful to have survived and have healthy children (and be healthy enough to run a 5k).

And WTF, my legs gave out on me before my CV system did.  Is this from having a sinus infection?  Riding my bike the night before?  All the Z1-Z2 training I have been doing? I don't remember this being a problem in previous 5k's.  They still feel much more sore and tired than I think they should!?!

And can I use my average HR over the last two miles as a basis for HR training?

Great race Fred, you have had great improvement since 07' in that race. Anything specific you attribute that to? Consistant training?

Out of curiousity where have you seeded yourself in the swim before and where have you seeded yourself on IM swims as well?

Fred Doucette - 2011-05-23 8:25 AM I have always struggled early in the swim. I should have been in the first row, but I sometimes question my swim ability. I will post more on improvement later.

It must be gratifying to look back over the years and see such consistent improvement.go

I can relate to what your saying about the swim. I am the same way as far as underestimating myself. I am timid about being knocked around. Ironic that when you just go to the front you get knocked around a lot less. It is a little intimidating for me to go to the front of the line.

I'm going to be Debbie Downer I guess. My workouts have been really pathetic this whole weekend. I had a nasty ride into a 22 mph wind with 32 mph gusts today. The first 55 minutes were straight into the wind. Mentally I just quit. I could not get myself to try. Several times I felt like I was on my trainer, pedaling but not going anywhere! Very disappointing.

It is finally warmer here which I am so thankful for but it seems the older I get the harder time my body has adjusting to the heat. I actually had to stop and walk to catch my breath on my run the other day. My heart was racing out of control. It's allergy season here too so that doesn't help.

Just feeling discouraged because my race is getting closer but my fitness seems to be on the decline.

Dina...don't worry about that ride at all.  You've put in a lof of quality work up to this point so just forget about the weekend.  And the heat is hard on all of us this early in the season...that'll come around after a bunch of times training in it.  Keep your head up...you'll bounce back!

Thanks for the pep talk !

Great job Fred.  Any ideas of racing again next year using a full taper for the race?  How far ahead was 1st and 3rd in your AG?

Will you still be 40-44 next year.  Hopefully one or more of the top 4 will age up to 45-49.  And I suppose you don't need to worry about the 35-39 aging up.

Wow - thanks everyone for the encouragement! IMTX was freaking amazing. I'm on such a high still. I'm back at work now and totally swamped but I can't wait to write up my RR. Overall I was really pleased with my performance. One of my training buddies beat me by just 7 minutes, and I know I could have dug a little deeper in parts to make up that time. He ended up in medical with two IV bags though. I felt fantastic at the finish, so maybe that tells you something.

The finish line at midnight was freaking incredible. Won't forget that moment! Way to go Jimmy and Fred and anyone else who was racing over the weekend.

Okay I have some serious catching up to do but I'll leave you with this...

For those of you with HIM experience, what would you suggest as your last weekend workout (assuming you normally do long rides saturday and long runs sunday).

My goal is not to add fitness, as it's too late now...just trying to stay as sharp as possible.

Here are my last 7 weekends

4/9     58 bike/2 t-run & 13 LR
4/16   62 bike/4 t-run & 13 LR
4/23   65 bike & 14 LR
4/30   69 bike/4 t-run & 14 LR
5/7     56 bike & 14 LR
5/14   OFF & Olympic race
5/21   60 bike & 14 LR
5/28   ??? & ???
6/4     Hawaii 70.3!!!!!

My initial thought was to get 45-50 on the bike, and 10 miles on the run...with harder, race type (maybe faster than HIM race pace) efforts thrown in the middle of each.  I'm thinking I should be pretty good with that...but if anything maybe would be open to the idea of toning it down a smidge...like 40 and 8???

ETA: Logs are 100% up to date.  Normal week for biking and running are 3x bike/115 mpw and 5-6x run 30-40 mpw with peaks of 130 and 45 the week of 4/25-5/1

Jason I would go more 40/8 at higher intensity. I don't think you want to run so much 1 week before a big race. Ignore my 17 miler before my recent race as that olympic was not an 'A' race.

Agree with Fred - I would back off. You are not going to get any fitness. I would go with 30-40 on the bike, with some tempo work in the middle and 8 on the run with a few strides mixed in.

OK, ready to start training again tomorrow. 2 of the last 3 days with no training is not a normal phenomenon for me.

I really don't feel any soreness or fatigue from my race, which is strange because usually I am more sore after even an olympic. Wonder what gives??

Same thing with me. I used to get sore after an Oly and very sore after a 1/2. I am/was fine after both this year. I think it has to do with years in the sport and training paces. Looking at the race - any of the individual pieces of the race could have been a hard training day for me but none were that different than what I do in training on a regular basis (swim was but swimming is not likely to make you to sore). Thoughts?
