BigDH - 2012-04-01 2:40 PM I had a really wonderful race this morning. A 10k. I thought I would likely get sub 48, if I was lucky get sub 47. Well I ended up with 45:24, which is so much faster than I thought possible. Especially after a horrible week of time in doctors offices, little sleep (today I was up at 4:50 so I could be in the office for 2 hours before the race)......I don't know how I did it. I am amazed. Well, alot has to do with the lady who caught me at 6k that I ended up trying to shake for the rest of the race. Without her I may have well only gone sub 48. Good day.

Congrats on finding the speed despite a tough week.  There is nothing more motivating than having someone stalking us during a run.  Glad to hear that you were able to persevere.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your day!

Took the new bike out on its first real ride today.  Wow - what a difference.  Yes - it was a mile or two faster than my old piece of crap but what I really liked was the stability.  I felt so much more in control and as a result I was able to make the most out of the hills.  The 25 miles felt pretty good and my hips didn't hurt when I got out of the saddle.

Question - I saw that they are getting ready to launch the Spring Mentor groups.  I'd love to stick with my beer drinking friends.  DH - are you going to be a mentor again and if so can we join your group? If not - do you want to join the same group?

Thor - that's a bold goal.  Definately doable - just make sure to factor in a couple of rest days.  I too want to move towards 3x per week but I think I will hold off until June when I go on vacation.  But its a good goal.

I'll think about what I should be working on and get back to the group.

kevinbe - 2012-04-01 11:33 AM I rolled back into training with a 19.7 miler today.  It started pouring, then  turned to snow.  The heavy wind on my soaking clathes felt no good.  After 4 miles of this or so, it let up, and I was able to finish relatively comfortable.  I took your advice David, and went out slow.  I had a few moments of race pace miles in there.  8:50/mi pace.  I was able to ease back into long run to see how it would effect my foot.  Also, practiced nutrition intake.

great perseverance on the run! What are you using for nutrition?

I've always used Power Gels from Power bar.  I don't love them, but they pack alot of punch.  I use one about every 3 miles after 9 miles on a long run like that.  The only other thing I've used is Hammer.  This is more like jelly.

I've messed around w/ gatoraid in my camelback.  about a 3:1 water/gatoraid mix.  But most of running is with camelbak for anything over 10 miles I take two good swills every mile until about 15 miles, then it's water about every half mile.

So glad to hear that you had a good run!  Damn - 20 miles.. that's pretty impressive - especially considering the weather.  Any foot pain today?

I had a thought yesterday as I was doing my trail run.  I don't know if you have any long trails out there - but running on dirt or grass will also help your feet.  If you can find the right path - it can really keep your feet from taking a beating...

Enjoy a well deserved beer

I hadn't felt anything for 2 days w/o training for a couple of weeks.  I thought it was all gone.  I started running today, and for the first 1.5 miles, I felt the heal immediately.  I told myself it it didn't get better, or got worse, I'd cut it short.  I Need to keep the mileage up for race in May.  The pain went away until about 14 miles when it came back w/ achilles pain to boot.  I put it in the back of the mind, finished the run with continuous throb, but I feel as though it's pretty light for the mileage, and after the marathon, I'm going to cut the running volume way down anyway.  Will continue to ice in the evenings and take IB's and drink librally when that does not work!

Nice ride.  So glad your getting past the pain.  As you get stronger and more fit, your body is rewarding you by getting healthier and pain free.

x2 on the group.  You're great support for me, and I get alot by reading your stories.

I think this is a great goal.  Being off of Hockey is great because it frees up another day to train.  I thought that I would be able to work out 6 times a week, and found I haven't reached that goal yet.  I get way too tired, but this continues to be my goal.  I also went too far.  I think if you ease into your workouts at a volume your currently doing and slowly build it up, that would be a good plan based on your 30 in 30 plan.  GO FOR IT!  Don't beat yourself up if you only get 29 though.  That's 29 more times you kicked A over the guy that didn't do anything.

David, going to do some 2/day workouts...one in the morning and one after work/during lunch to allow some rest days. At least that is the plan so far.

Kevin, if I ran as much as you I would probably only be working out 2x  a week. You and Darren go for some crazy a$$ long runs!Smile

First swim of the year...ouch! Speed is fine as long as I don`t have to swim more then 50mLaughing!

First 600m was tough going. Arms felt like they were going to fall off. Last 1000 wasn`t quite as bad. Gotta get swimming that is for sure!

Good job Thor on getting in the pool.  I always find the hrdest part is geeting from dangling my feet over the edge to jumping in past the waist!

I did my first Brick workout of my career today.  21 mile bike followed by a 6.2 mile run.  It was bad A$$.  I definitely need to look at nutrition as the weather get's warmer.  I used 2 gels in a bottle of water for the bike.  I'm thinking I need to add a solid, like a bar, or something.  I was pretty wobbly into the run.  I had 2 Gels on the run with water pack.  I felt fine by mile 5, but I think if I dial it in on the bike a little better, transitioning to run will go smoother.

That water is damn cold at 5:30am in the morning!

For an oly, try a bar or something before you run. You will find that your legs are wobbly after a few whisky`s, oops, sorry wrong conversation...actually just the change of biking to running will cause you run like that. You will get used to it. I find something solid while i am running just doesn`t work for me. I usually try to get it down in transitions. I also use a powder in my bike waterbottle.

Good job on the brick, that is massive.

Question - I saw that they are getting ready to launch the Spring Mentor groups.  I'd love to stick with my beer drinking friends.  DH - are you going to be a mentor again and if so can we join your group? If not - do you want to join the same group?

Oh don't make me blush. I actaully am not too impressed with my mentoring job this time around. It was everyone who participated in the group that made it worthwhile and kept me motivated.

Work and family life have been so busy. Training on top of that has given me less time on the computer than I think I needed to keep up with everyone.

So, no I won't be doing the mentor thing in the Spring time. But, of course, this thread isn't going anywhere and I plan on checking in frequently (or as frequently as I have been checking in) to see how everyone is doing and share my stories.

I probably will join a mentor group myself. I think everyone should. It is a chance to meet new people and get new perspectives.

Great stuff.  One thing I need to do is partake after an event with a beverage.  I'm puting that on my bucket list.

In other news.  TI is awesome.  I feel as though it's finally coming together.  I hit 20x75 in the pool this morning after 300 of TI drills.  The drills just helped me carry it right on into the main set.  I was relaxed, long, and lean.  Slow is smooth.  smooth is fast.  I feel like I can carry this momentum into longer, smoother sets.

Another thing I'm picking up on;  The swim is a fraction of an event.  as long as I stay afloat, finish out of the water, I can continue on the bike and run.  I spend a massive amount of time over thinking the swim, when it's not such a huge deal come race day.  I just have to be prepared for the distance.

Good job. You are right, it is a small part of the event. But if you get even a little competitive the swim, a long with the transitions, are an important and relatively easy way to reduce your time.

I would suggest you think just a tad more critically about the swim, sure you got to stay afloat and finish but if you are going to take that view then it is important also to make the goal to "get out of the water fresh". TI teaches that relaxed easy swimming technique. Not strenuous. Swim all day type of thing. When you get out of the water, and you aren't racing, you should feel like you are getting out of a tub. Seriously. Think that. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Just chill in the water. You don't want to be in a position when you are swimming the last bit of the swim struggling to hold your form and doggy paddling every 10 strokes. The water to me, especially in the IM or HIM distance, was always just a chance to finish digesting my breakfast, purge all the extra water I drank, and wake up a little. I never even really thought about it as part of the race. Just something I had to do to get to the real part of the race which was the race on the bike to the bike cut off.

So like I say, just a tad more critically. Nothing huge.
