Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi, everyone. I didn't disappear off the face of the Earth...work's getting a little crazy. I got in my biggest training week ever last week, and am adding a little this week. My daughter usually has swim practice on Thursdays but can't go now because of a school commitment, so we decided to swim on Tuesday afternoons when there isn't any practice. I asked her coach (also my Masters coach, and a good guy...) to put together some workouts for her. Last night we're he's telling what to do, and it's basically "yeah, warm up, then 4 x 200 descend blah blah blah...oh, and make sure you do some kick sets and wave to your dad as you pass him swimming". Ouch. |

Ouch. That has to sting a bit! Had a similar situation this Summer. My son is a college distance runner and was having some knee issues over the Summer so he decided he would swim to maintain fitness. No lessons or swim team growing up. He would come back from the pool and ask if 29 minutes was good for a mile swim (1:40/pace) Told him it was great but I was sure he was miscounting laps or fudging on the time. So, we go to the pool together one Sunday and sure enough he can swim. Breathing to both sides, just cruising along and every 5-6 laps he just does an easy back stroke to "rest". When he is really swimming I can't keep up with him. In 2-3 weeks he was already a better swimmer than I was after 4 years and over a million yards. He does zero swimming all Fall and over Christmas break he swims a few times.....comes home and asks me if 1:08 is a good time for 100 yards. WTF! I've never been in the same zip code as 1:08 for 100. I'm excited for him as swimming is such a struggle for so many of us and hard to pick up late in life and now he seems to have some interest in doing triathlons in the future. He already crushes me on the swim and run........but he will NEVER catch me on the bike.....right? Tell me I'm right. Steve-nice work on the weight loss. You have put together some really nice training weeks. Bryan-I am zero help on the trainer issues. Sounds like the rear skewer isn't long enough to mount the bike properly. Do trainer's come with a longer skewer or are they available? Randee-I'm afraid I would never get anything done if I tried to work from home. Easy run and bike intervals are the plan for me today |

If no one ever tells you that you can't be fast, why would you doubt it? You just go out and crush it and don't think twice. Good for him. Looks like another 4-6" here tonight. Thrilled. Did "Fight Club" last night on the trainer which was just awesome. Love some of those Sufferfest vids. Hoping today I can get to the pool before the snow starts in case I can't get home in time to do anything tonight. |

School vacation. 2/6 lanes closed for family swim. 1/6 reserved for water aerobics. 3 lanes for what looked like 12 people all doing the breast stroke. Glad it's only 2 minutes from my work. Might be a lite swim week for me. |

I made it through two plus weeks of really rough workouts as of today and have an entire day OFF tomorrow! I could also cry because I'm off for not one, but two root canals and crowns in a few minutes. Anyone else want to go to the dentist for me? Basically will take 5 hours of your life you'll never get back. Only positive, maybe I'll lose a little weight since I know eating will be too big of a challenge! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yow! Two root canals. Bummer. Back from Northern Michigan. Snow over my head in some places. Lake Michigan is frozen as far as you can see from shore-apparently the most frozen the Great Lakes have been in 25 years. I did lots of downhill skiing and a moderate amount of cross country skiing. I had always heard that cross country was hard but now I understand. My quads are more fried than they would be at the end of a hard week of bike training. So much for the "time off." I cross country skied about 3/4 of a mile out on Lake Michigan to see the strange ice caves and cliffs and other crazy formations that the lake created when it was freezing. Very cool. Totally surreal out there and who knows when the lake will ever freeze this much again? I am more convinced than ever that I could very happily move to the northern Lower Peninsula. It is fabulous up there. Have to get both kids out of the house and then we will start to get serious about this. Some folks retire to the South. We are going North. ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Right after I got home and unpacked the car I ran to the bike shop to pick up my bike. New tri rig front brake looks very nice (Editorial moment, I don't understand why companies like Specialized, Quintana Roo, Cervelo, etc. build these space-age aerodynamic frames and then put completely non-aero brakes on? I know it probably won't change my time, MUCH, but if nothing else, the tri rig brake is about a 1000 times more aesthetically pleasing. Had to get that off my chest.) New cables throughout. New bar tape. It is all ready for a two hour trainer ride tomorrow. That should give me plenty of time to figure out if I like the new fit. |

A couple of our guys from work went over this weekend and had some awesome pictures when they came back. I agree with you about Northern Michigan, one of my favorite places anywhere. Unfortunately for me, my wife hates everything having to do with anything colder than about 65 degrees!! So, I always end up skiing and enjoying winter sports with just me and the kids. On a SBR front, I had the most fun I have ever had on a bike workout tonight. Just a one hour ride on Trainer Road but a bunch of different types of intervals. Low cadence, big gear, high cadence, sprints...It was a blast and the hour absolutely flew by! I was apprehensive when I saw this workout in my schedule for the week but now I will look forward to my short, hard day for the next three weeks of this phase of the plan. Felt so good, I just had to go for a run afterward! Have a great night everyone! Chris |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jason-my wife had seen something on the national news about the ice caves and the accessability due to the cold Winter. I saw something on TV about them the other day. Pretty amazing. I can't imagine living in the North. Yeah, I moan and groan about the 6 months of heat and humidity down here but not sure I could deal with months and months of snow and cold! Chris-I'm with you on the bike workouts. Variety is what keeps it interesting. Tonight my main set was 5X10 min @ 235+ watts on 3 min easy. What kept it interesting was that sets 1,3 and 5 were at 88+ cadence and sets 2 and 4 were at 55-65 cadence. Had to really jack up the resistance on the rollers to do the low cadence work.....felt like riding through mud and definitely got my quads working!

I hear you on the mud. I had 4 short intervals, can;t remember whether they were 2 minutes or 3 minutes, that I was supposed to keep the cadence at 50-60 they were all between 105% and 120% of FTP. My default, comfortable, natural cadence seems to be right around 91-93 so this was a big difference for me, turning a bigger gear much slower than is comfortable. My trainer resistance increases as speed increases do I was absolutely "in the mud" as well. |

Ouch! Good Morning! Happy to report after 5 hours at an endodontist and then the dentist yesterday, I am a-ok. ready for my day off! Jason--the ice caves on Lake Superior look awesome. If Paul wasn't still recovering we would make that mile trek across the lake to check them out. They've been in the news consistently over the last few weeks. Chris--my favorite bike workouts are ones that include variety just like you're describing. Even SLDs seem ok when you have other things to look forward to! |

I was in-between meetings the other day and there was a huge Giant shop (huge Giant, sounds weird) right down the street so I went and took a look and their Trinity Composite model had the brakes hidden really well under the forks. I looked at some other models online afterwards and noticed that some of them really do sit out there. I thought that was weird because like you said, once you get serious about every piece of equipment you'd think they would just tuck the brakes away from the start so you don't have to think of it later. Brand new model was $1925 or the Trinity 2 was $2550 and came with Ultegra components instead of Tiagra. So tempting. |

That sounds like a nice deal on the Giant. With the "aero" versus standard brakes I think alot of it comes down to the convenience of maintenance/adjustment of the brakes. The ones that are tucked up under the front fork or down low off the frame in the back are much more difficult to adjust and work on. My tri bike has the brake tucked down low in the back and I have to put it on the stand, turn it upside down and then use a tiny little hex wrench to open up the brake or make adjustments. Its also a bad place as it gets alot of road grime/sweat there. The only time its a problem for me is when I'm putting on my race wheels and need to open the brakes some. At a minimum replacing the standard front brake with something more aero like the TriRig model or even the new Magura hydraulic brake would be pretty simple for most manufacturers. I recently bought a TriRig rear brake to replace the current brake....which in my opinion is a piece of crap. I have a nice Dura Ace on the front and may replace it with a TriRig at some point. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Suzy- good to hear that your root canals went well. I had a great treadmill workout this morning. It's been a year since I felt like vomiting during a run workout. Glad to see that things are finally starting to return to normal. Running all out for 30 seconds at a 10% incline tends to make one want to puke. Happy Girl today!! |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Suzy - Happy you got through the root canals. I can't stand the thought of having to go through one at any point in my life. Gonna get a bike workout going in about 30 minutes on my trainer; great day outside to ride (71 IN FEBRUARY!?!?!?), but I still need to test it to make sure it will function properly if/when I need it. Not to mention that I'm not entirely sure the spoke is 100% secured for an outside ride right now. And yes, the trainer got assembled; I was tinkering with it off an on until around 11 PM Monday night when the trainer finally decided to give up the charade and secure my bike. Too bad it was too late for a ride at that point. One huge benefit to trainers: I don't have to stop dong schoolwork while riding, at least the kind requiring a lot of writing. Math has to stop, Law and Tocqueville doesn't. :P Anyways, I'm still having a rough time shifting my sleep schedule around to 745-800 in the morning; I hear the alarm, but my brain is in "go...away" mode still. :P. That'll get shifted around....I hope. Weight on 2/13 was 235.2. I'm scheduled to do another round of metrics tomorrow; I'm not expecting good news after 4 straight days off. Happy day ya'll. Enjoy the weather! ![]() |

Suzy - Ditto on the well wishes in regards to the root canal, sounds like you made it through relatively unscathed. At least as much as can be expected from any multi-hour dental procedure. Rene - Great job on the workout. Now just duplicate that effort/feeling for the first mile of your next 5K and hold on for the rest of the race. Pacing problem = solved! ![]() |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, finally laid rubber after 2 1/2 months, but it was on my wall (odd sort of place). I never hit the brakes, but the rear wheel was too close to the wall and after I stopped pedaling on one of my sprints, the trainer became my brake and christened the wall. :P That being said, I didn't realize what trainers can do to wheels. I got off the bike to find bits of rubber on the wall and directly behind the trainer. After looking at my wheel, there were a couple crevices that were not there before. Whether they punctured or not I'm not sure of, but it's got me wondering if this kind of reaction to trainers is commonplace for rear wheels or if I did something wrong. It was a good trainer ride though. Did 45 seconds worth of sprint intervals, 2 on small gear and one on the large. The rest of the time was simply load bearing. I can't wait to get settled in on some cycling shoes; it'll be interesting to see how my performance is once I get the shoes on board. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Trainers eat rear tires. Some trainers more than others. Some tires more than others. You can buy a trainer tire that will last forever but is not approved for on the road use. They are typically $40-50. I use old tires that are almost worn out or buy the cheapest, most durable looking road tire I can find. That way if I want to pull the bike off the trainer for an impromptu road ride I don't have to change out the tire if I don't want to. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, I just finished up the most frightening run ever! I got home from school and it was around 70 degrees, so I decided to go for a nice short run before swimming tonight-wasn't even going to have to wear a shirt. I also decided to take Gus, my golden retriever, with me since it was nice out and I wasn't planning on going too far. I decided to run through some neighborhoods I hadn't been in before, for a change of scenery. We were about 2 miles in and running down a neighborhood street when I looked to my left and saw a Rottweiler mix push open the storm door in the front of its house and come barreling into the street. I love dogs, and I believe in not judging breeds, but when a Rottweiler is running at me, I assume the worst. I instinctively pushed Gus behind me, but the dog ran right past me and jumped on him; he meant business. He was trying to pin Gus to the ground, and he had about 40-50 lbs. on him, probably. I managed over and over again to push him off, at one point I even picked Gus up and was holding him in the air, but that damned dog wasn't giving up and was just jumping all over us trying to get to him. After what seemed like forever, but was probably only like 30 seconds, I was just screaming for help in the middle of the road, and a guy came running up and pulled his dog away. I was just panting and checking Gus to make sure he was ok, which he was, and the guy was just holding his dog back. Once I knew Gus was ok, and I was able to catch my breath, I told the guy we were just going to walk away nice and slow. I could've gotten mad, but he did have the dog in the house and must've not realized he could get out the storm door. I would've had a MUCH different reaction is Gus hadn't been all right, though. Fortunately, dogs being the awesome creatures that they are, it wasn't 20 seconds before Gus was ready to just get back to the run. Now, he's just lying on the floor next to me panting from the run. It was definitely scary, but I'm glad everything worked out fine! |

In our house, though, we joke/cry/cringe at the fact that my husband such extensive dental work 3 years ago that we could have bought a really nice new car. 2 implants with bridge, a bone graft, 8 root canals with crowns. Cha- bing! Jason....growing up, our winter ski vacation was always to Petoskey, MI. We loved it. Would love to visit the area in the summer. |
