Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by aviatrix802 Okay, just trying to catch up with everyone! I have been following everyone's posts this week but only from my phone and I don't always like posting from my phone, I can't quote people from it so I wait to get to a computer. Good swim and hour run yesterday. Today I had a bike/run brick - 45 min on the bike followed by a 15 min run. This is the workout I've missed the last 3 weeks so I'm glad I finally got it in. I'll admit I'm a bit disappointed in my bike today - I like to always be 85 rpm or higher when on my trainer regardless of gear. Today I averaged around 80 I think (I'd have to look it up). I know by the end I was pushing a bit bigger gear but sheesh I'm annoyed I didn't catch it. Actually there was one point where i had to jump off the bike for a second and I know my cadence dropped to nil before I paused my watch but it shouldn't have affected it that much I wouldn't think. I still have to get cadence on my watch....that would solve that. On a HUGE positive note, I was looking at my training plan and got to thinking...I am running 1+ hour runs 3x's a week which is typically in excess of 6 miles and on the 1:15 days I get up to 8 miles....10k is the farthest I ran last year due to my knee! I'm doing it 3x's a week now! I'm telling you, the run/walk thing works and I am living proof. hahahahaha happy dance...now to keep it going and not annoy body parts on this journey.. Tomorrow I have another swim and an hour at 100+ rpm....let it rain! I've got The 100 on Netflix! Oh, does anyone do the cycling training videos on Strava or do you do Sufferfest or ...I'm blanking on the other popular one. I'm thinking I should start doing something like this for more structure rather than catching up on Netflix... ![]() Jenn, I've used the Sufferfest videos along with TrainerRoad and they're a blast - though they're damn hard, as in wanting to puke afterwards hard for some of them. The TrainerRoad workouts are great, too. I think they have like 1,000 different ones now. That would also solve the cadence issue, as it displays on the screen. And that's great news on the running!

I got the call from the school nurse; the 8 year old threw up on the bus ride in this morning. Poor nugget. That's okay, I can do PT on the floor near him and we'll watch the NCAA tournament today and tomorrow....may our brackets not explode. Hopefully the bug is short-lived and he doesn't share it... ![]() Stuff happens and we move on. If he's feeling better later I'll jump on my trainer for a bit, but we'll play that by ear. I've now got an entire day to do squats, lunges, and planks..... ![]() |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by nicole14e Had a tough gym workout this morning and plan to go on a run this evening either before or after I give a swim lesson. Have another tough workout tomorrow morning (this is my last week of the unlimited sessions of that gym I was telling you guys about, so I'm trying to get as much out of it as I can), and will likely swim some laps tomorrow after my lessons. I am going car shopping on Friday. I've never actually bought a car by myself before. My parents came with me to buy my first car and they bought me my second car as a graduation present (along with a $12,000 loan to pay off...unfortunately I'm not THAT spoiled). I know this is not tri related, but I was wondering if anyone leases their car, and if so why they prefer it that way? Gretchen, I know you just went through car shopping so I'm hoping you may have some tips fresh in your brain for me ![]() I've never leased a car. This is only the fourth car I've ever bought, and the first two were purchased by two kids straight out of college with no clue. To this day I'm 100% sure we got totally taken to the cleaners on those cars! What we have done on both of our recent vehicle purchases (bought a used Murano about 18 mo ago) is to search autotrader.com to find vehicles we liked in our price range somewhat nearby. The used market here sucks (a bunch of college kid trade ins and things they want to sell to college kids with 100K miles on them), so we searched regionally. I like to buy 1-2 year old cars used because it lets someone else take the depreciation hit on them, but I still get a relatively new car in the end with low miles. I did a lot of research on KBB, autotrader, edmunds, etc. to find the right price for each vehicle we were interested in from their autotrader profiles and then went and did test drives. With background data on pricing and all that the negotiation process was super easy. I'd also suggest securing your own financing through your (or another) bank before you go in. You can still have them run your info to see if they can find you a better deal, but it is really comforting to know you have the $$ handled. Of course, that doesn't apply if you are dropping cash! Good luck!! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by aviatrix802 Originally posted by drfoodlove Long run this morning followed by four hours of truck shopping/buying (2015 Ram 1500--deep cherry red). Thank goodness for calf sleeves!! I have decided to start the Ironfit HIM training plan. There is still a very slim chance I could go to Egypt in May, but I'm tired of the wait and see approach to this season! monday morning is go time!! Love the cherry red color - that's what our Pilot is. Congrats on the new wheels! I am also doing the Be Iron Fit training plan for the full. So far is seems pretty good. I'm only in the base building phase; that finishes up in a couple of weeks then on to "build" phase. Oh, I'm so curious about the beard falling off King Tut's mask.....my 8 year old read about it in "Time - for kids". (totally off tri topic...) I'm curious to know what happened to the guy and why he tried to hide it by epoxying it back on, etc, etc, ...did he get fired?. I figured if anyone knew about it you would! Hahaha The beard!!! It is awesome (in a horrible, train wreck kind of way). So, first, you should keep in mind that the beard is (or at least was) removable. It was supposed to be able to come off!! I don't think, with the epoxy used, that it ever will come off again. Everyone involved with the debacle lost their jobs plus their supervisors. In late January eight people were charged with "negligence and violation of the professional rules of the workplace" which could end with jail time. As far as I know, there hasn't been a trial date set. As for why...no one is really sure why it went so badly and why they ended up allowing a custodian (husband of one of the curators) to epoxy the beard back on. Those involved aren't saying anything right now, which is probably wise. From my perspective, it all seems very normal to me in that Egyptians rarely want to take responsibility for anything officially. There is a lot of unofficial agreements for things, but then no one will ever sign off officially on stuff because they don't want to be held responsible if things go wrong. I think this is what has happened here. The removable beard fell off, but then everyone panicked and tried to hide it so they wouldn't be held responsible (which could involve losing their job, and that would make it next to impossible to get another job in Egypt--very major consequences). |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by aviatrix802 Originally posted by Moonrocket I have been totally slacking- anyone have tips for getting back on the horse? Consistency is my total downfall. set a goal or sign up for a race!! That is what does it for me. I also have to follow a plan to take the thought out of it too much in the beginning. I agree!! Set yourself a goal--something that seems slightly crazy, but totally doable if you are consistent. This is the origin of my 400 workouts/year goal. I was totally inconsistent in training during 2012-2014 and it was really reflected in my races (few as they were back then). I knew if I wanted to perform better I had to train consistently, so I looked at Oly training plans and noted that most had about nine workouts a week (3x s/b/r), so I Just took that to the logical conclusion (9x52=468) and then relaxed the goal a little to allow for work travel, life, and rest days. Ended up with 400 for the year as my goal--slightly crazy because it averages out to more than one workout a day, but still totally doable. My other piece of advice is to give yourself rewards for meetings small intermittent goals. I only sorta did that last year (new bike after 200 workouts), because the overall goal was going to be satisfying in and of itself. However, this year I set the same goal (400 workouts in 2015), but have decided to reward myself with $1 per workout during the first 100, $2 per workout during second 100, $3 for third, and $4 during fourth 100, and $5 for anything over 400. In the end, it will total about $1000+/-, which is a pretty substantial reward! I can only spend the money after the workouts are done. I recently topped 100 workouts, so I moved $100 into my "tri account" (aka an envelope taped to the refrigerator!) and can use it for whatever I need for tri. I could also use it for something else if I wanted to, but seriously, who has time for another hobby?!?!? Use something that works for you and motivates you. |

On the bad - my left ankle still hurts. Hoping for a miracle on Sunday - in addition to the 12 inches of snow we are supposed to get. Good times. Hope everyone is well! |

In my mind, I think I will be better off doing these over the standard PVR/Netflix ride. More focussed. They require visa#(which I used a just about used up visa from walmart so if I forgot they keep charging you.) Depending on your setup it will show cadence/heart rate etc. I have been alternating between a downward spiral and a very dark place... The thing about sufferfest and trainer road is that I HATE riding in doors. I would rather go out in sub zero weather for an hour than ride a trainer for 15 minutes. However - I need something to push myself when I am biking. Any idea of something that I could put onto my iphone to give myself the same experience. I listen to music but that hasn't been doing the trick any more. I'm not even sure such a thing exists. Thoughts? |

Same problem here. I got off to a great start in January, totally fell off the wagon in February, and just as I felt like I had some motivation back at the beginning of the month, I got hit by some crazy cold that had me just exhausted for over a week - I was winded standing for more than 15 minutes or walking up a flight of stairs. I'm better now, and the weather was beautiful yesterday, so I went out for a 2 mile run on my lunch break and wanted to throw up by the end. Turns out after a year and a half of near inactivity you shouldn't resume at your old pace right off the bat! Back it today, maybe with some better pacing... DQ, good luck with the HM on Sunday. I'm still crossing my fingers that the snow is a joke. I'm supposed to be helping the wife build some new garden beds this weekend, not getting the snow blower back out! And for a little personal brag, the no-booze, no-sugar thing I'm doing for March with my wife seems to be working: as of this morning I'm down 11 pounds since the 1st. Now back to lurking! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A bit of a /state of the union post... The loss of my job has really put a damper on my training. My depression has sucked the life out of me but I've gotten about 60% of my workouts in and so I'll give myself a small pat on the back for not saying F it - but I need to be doing more especially with Boston coming up in 5 weeks. My biggest problem is food. I'm weighing in at 235 which is the heaviest I've been since 2012 when this group helped me lose 95 pounds. Permit me a walk down memory lane for a moment. It's November 2012. I've lost the weight and my racing season is over. It's a sunday morning so I weigh myself as usual - and I weighed in a few pounds more than I had the week before 171 instead of 169. I remember having a panic attack right then and there - oh my god, I'm going to get fat again. All my hard work is going to be for naught. And then I had a thought that calmed me immediately... I lost the weight with the help of this group (Cynthia, Thor, Kevin, and DH) and as long as I stay a member - there is no way I will ever go back to being 270 again. And so, I need to reconnect with this page and with you all. I need to build the relationships with you - the new people as well as the old - that will give me the power to put the chips/pizza/second helpings down. So far the external help I've gotten from Kate, John and Scott has certainly helped.... but its like the train that has fallen off the tracks. Part of the reason is because I haven't been a regular poster and I need to do that more often. because I desperately need to get back on for my own health, peace of mind, and so I can hear those magic words again - David Qua (hopefully they will pronounce it right this time) you are an ironman. Just a thought and thanks for the support and letting me unload. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thor--that pic is awesome! #108--1:15 on the trainer this morning (inside). It was a chore. I managed to keep the cadence high (85+), but I couldn't get my HR up into Zone 2 to save my life. Coupled with the fact that my HR right before starting was in the low 90s, I'm worried it might be a sign of over training. I'll be keeping a close eye on things for the next few days. |

Along with some other changes, it got me from a decade of running part of a year nad injuring myself so bad I had to take the rest of the year off - to currently on my 19th straight month of running without stopping (this past week for the jhip aside, I blame the swimming for that!
