Sorry I don't have much course info...long story short...it was supposed to be my first tri, lots of rain, swim was cancelled and they shortened the bike.  I didn't race.  I wanted my first tri to be a tri   I had friends race the 70.3 the next day, and like what I have heard and read in race reports, they said the bike was hilly

If you are signed up, good luck! If your thinking about it good luck with the decision.

Yah I've heard it's got a lot of climbing!  I signed up a few months ago, but all of my training is targeting Louisville - I'm treating it as a warm-up and a nice, hilly challenge to get me ready.  we'll see how it goes, but I'm more concerned about getting my nutrition ready to test on the day of the race than actually kicking major butt - that said, i hope to do both

jasmel99 - 2011-03-03 2:56 PM This will be my first IM and I have a question regarding shorts? I'm trying to figure out if I should wear my bike shorts while swimming or go with a tri shorts and change in T1. Any suggestions? All my bike train has been with bike shorts.

As others have said, most people do not swim in bike shorts for a reason. If you doubt this advice, just try it and see for yourself. Actually (and probably obvious), but try ANYTHING you plan on doing. A lot. A lot a lot a lot. In all different conditions. Then you'll see what is most comfortable for YOU.

For ME, I swim and bike in the same shorts (DeSoto 400-mile shorts) and then switch to run shorts on the run. Works well for me, and was something I tried in training many times.

I will not be participating in this race, but my dad is...

I was just wondering, how far is the Galt Hotel from the start and from the finish?

Thank you!

Gobey,

Try Lexington or Cincinnati.  they are both a little over an hour away from Louisville.  I assume you will be renting a car.

Strong week of training.  My run is coming along.  I am really looking forward to the build section of the Be Iron Fit plan.  It should be challenging and rewarding.

I travel back and forth between Boston and Louisville a couple of times a year; I do not think I have ever found a cheap or a direct flight.  Try... Cincinatti, OH 1.5 hr drive, Nashville 2.5 hr, Indianapolis 2.5hr.  I would caution against Lexington... small terminal with few options.  Good luck.

Just curious if anyone that has done IM Louisville before stayed in a hotel outside of the city limits.  Hotel rates seem to go down significantly if you stay on the Indiana side of the river, but I am curious about parking the day of the race.

Todd-

I have and will be again, staying at the Comfort Suites Hotel in Jeffersonville, IN. It is located about three minutes from the start. I had no issues getting in and out of the city, or with finding parking.

Good luck!

Todays Run LT Test.....Love what coach Dan is putting me thru. Finding HR Zones for future workouts, but requires MAX effort testing like this one.....
Find a track in your area. If you cannot find a track, pick a stretch of flat road at least 2 miles long.
- 5 min of VERY easy running
- 10' getting up to your maximum effort by gradually increasing your intensity to your previous LT (5K race effort).
* Begin the test *
- Once you are there hit your split counter and grind out the 10'
You will go as far and as fast as you can. SUSTAINABLE pace.
- 15' of easy jogging.
Record the avg, max HR and distance covered for the 10' section and your overall effort/time.
The most common mistake athletes make in completing their performance tests correctly is not being at a maximum effort when they start timing
Be sure to not go out too fast and fizzle at the end but achieve a max.

Results for 10min Max effort:
Dst covered: 1.41mi.
Avg Pace: 6:58, best pace: 5:56
Avg HR: 187 Max 193 (call EMS)

This was a good HARD effort. Short day, but set new HR zones for future run training, very cool.

Struggling to find a hotel I'm happy with... I really need/prefer a suite with a full kitchen like those at TownePlace suites or a Residence Inn (too many dietary restrictions to risk eating out during race week - I'm cooking baby!). Traveling with another BTer and her husband so we're looking at the 2-bedroom suites. TownePlace in Jefferson looked awesome but upon further investigation appears to only have ONE BATHROOM in their 2-bed suites, which baffles me as every other 2-bed suite hotel I've stayed in has 2 bathrooms. And honestly, race morning would get kind of crazy with 3-4 people sharing 1 bathroom, 2 with race morning "jitters." Ew.

There *is* a Residence in EAST Louisville but it looks pretty far away (15 miles?) and the room descriptions for beds said "double murphy beds" and "sofa beds" for the bedrooms. Uuh?

Does anyone have other suggestions along these lines, something I may not have found so far? There appears to be a Residence in Downtown but 1) they don't come up on the Marriott search online (??) and 2) on the IMLOU lodging site they only have 1-queen rooms available.

Sigh.

Sigh.

I had to call them directly as it didn't show up for me either using the marriott website.  I liked the idea of having a kitchen as well. I think they wanted $179/nite.

I have a shoe question... has anyone owned or tried the Avia Bolt II or III yet?  It is time for new shoes and I am considering them but info is scant regarding the III.  Among the little info I found  one description mentioned it was a Neutral, which is ok for me.  I am an under-pronator and very bow-legged heal striker so I put a lot of pressure on the outside edge of my sole.  I've had past success with Brooks Ghost but feel like they wear out fast.  Sauconny felt ok too.  Thanks.

I did a quick search for suites in Louisville and I noted a Residence Inn and Quality Inn near Airport/UofL area; not sure about vacancies though.  It is not the prettiest area but it has quick access to I-65N which will take you dwntn in appx 10 min.  I live in east Louisville near where I-64 and I-265 cross and it takes me about 20 -25min with lite traffic to get downtown.  In east louisville there are also some extended stay rooms/hotels/suites off of I-64 at Hurstborne Ln and Blankenbaker Pkwy areas; these are nicer areas than airport and appx 15-20 min outside of dwntn.   Jeffersonville IN mentioned in earlier posts is 5 min to T1 area and so so too.  I have not been dwntn on IM race morning yet but I do not anticipate too heavy of traffice on I-64 or I-65.  once off the interstate I think things may get congested going near great lawn at T1.  I imagine parking will be easy for those who want to pay $$$ on race day.  good luck.

Redremy--I can't speak for that particular shoe, but I can pass along advice that I was once given.  Find the most reputable running store in your town.  Tell the staff you have no preconceived thoughts on shoes and that you want them to check your gait (preferably on a treadmill with computer).  Once you have done that, have them bring three pairs of shoes that they think will work well for you based on what they discovered and your training plans.

You probably have heard that before, but it bears repeating.  Too often I have seen people buy shoes based on color or brand or price-point.  You really can't do that with running shoes.  They are too valuable.

Good luck in your search.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.  I ended up with tickets out of Manchster, NH.  Little better than Boston.  Nothing direct...that Poland Springs' commercial comes to mind "You just can't there from here"

Jillian- Great job again and I watched the video last night as well. You've come a long way! congrats!I took the day off yesterday and this morning I hit the pool with some of the peeps from the tri club. There was this girl in the group and we were following her lead the whole way. WE only swam 2000 but found out from her during one of the rest periods she's done three or four Ironmans and she is one of those elite swimmers. Her PR is 55mins- I tried keeping up and she sure does fly!!!!!!Anyone else getting excited?thomas
