suzimmer -
On cold weather running....Before last year I too would not even attempt to run if the temps were in the 30's.  Such a wimp, was I.
Last year I had to train through the winter since I had an April marathon (Boston) and I was not going to do long runs on the treadmill. So had to HTFU and get outside no matter what the weather, and in the process discovered I actually like winter running.  Who would have believed?  not me.   Although the coldest I've run in to date is 16 degrees.  This sunday's run may beat that in that the projected high temp is 20 and we will be running in the am so we can get our 13 miles in and have plenty of time before the Bears game.

13 miles!!! wow, big run!
I've really gotten into winter running this year. I actually like winter running better then summer running now. I dont like getting over heated and NY is so humid in the summer, bleh. This is weird  but I think it helps my running when my legs and butt gets a little numb, I dont feel the tightness I sometimes get in my glutes and dont notice other little aches as much in really cold weather.

Have a great weekend everyone! I'm going to take my kids swimming sunday and a movie with my partner tomorrow night, those are the extent of my plans...

Ahhh, so far behind with reading all your posts!

As for me, the other day I did 4 laps straight freestyle which is huge because I've been stuck at 3 for so long.  Then I finished up switching between that and breaststroke but that was one accomplishment so far.  Next time hopefully I can do 5!

Ok, now time to catch up with all of you!

Hi guys...don't laugh but I must get this off my chest.  I was just rereading my story post and to my absolute horror realized I used the contraction 'it's' when I clearly needed the possessive 'its'.  Ok, I feel better now that I've corrected myself.

Another question!  (imagine that!)  My workout plan is designed around periodization.  I was looking ahead at my training this week and thought "that's it?"  My workouts are 1/4 to 1/2 of what I've been doing for two weeks.  Someone please tell me to trust this.  Would it be bad to add in any other cardio type work that doesn't involve swim/bike/run after I've completed my tri specific training?  Or, am I already a head case, worrying about lost fitness when this should be a good backing off period.

Haha, you are so funny!  Thanks for the correction : )

And that is an awesome question, looking forward to knowing the answer to that so thanks!

50 min run on the treadmill, 30 min free weights, weight machine, yoga and stretching.  Swim in the morning (speed drills) and then 90-min bike workout after work.

You are a crazy man!  Not that you need encouragement but keep it up, you're awesome!

Now that I'm all caught up reading all your posts, congrats to all of you who have lost weight!  That's awesome and keep it up!  I'm right behind you hoping to lose at least 10lbs. so before and after pics to come...

It's been a crazy week.  I started a new master's program in wellness and fitness which is a year long program and in the end you sit for the NASM personal trainers certification test.  So I've been trying to get organized with that and then my whole household is sick too just like some of you guys.  I have two little guys and between coughing, sore throats, fevers and pink eye (which is just about the grossest thing ever to have) I'm pretty sure we've just been passing these things back and forth between each other.  Anyway, I'm not sweating it too much because I still have a few weeks before I really buckle down and get started on my training.  Perfect timing too because I will be traveling again and it is so hard to keep training while you travel let alone eat decently healthy.  Once Feb. 5th comes along you all better watch out though!!! Laughing

Oh, and I signed up for a stroke lesson tomorrow which I am very very excited about so I'll have to keep you all posted on how that goes.

Last, Iceman your kitchen is beautiful!!! Makes me want to go make some yummy healthy treats!

Well everyone, keep up all your great training and have a good weekend!

Love that you are stretching out your swim.  It gets easier.  It's all about taking it easy in the water.  making friends.  Not fighting.  Thinking aerodynamic.  Mr. Smooth Swimming has some great tips.  They have an avatar that illustrates the best stroke.  And a few days ago someone posted a Youtube of Lance Armstrong swimming at Hawaii.  He probably will compete this fall.  So Mr. Smooth analyzed his stroke.  I learned a lot.

Happy weekend McFuzzies!  Good luck to any racers!

Thanks for the youtube info on swimming.  Here's my question:  when I do my swims I am breathing to the right with every stroke 80% of the time.  In the middle of my workout I'll work on bilateral every stroke and then bilateral every third stroke.  Since all my swimming is open water should I be moving towards breathing every third stroke or is it personal preference/comfort?  Is one way more efficient for distance swimming?

I like breathing every 3rd stroke, it feels more efficient to me. I alternate breathing on both sides for my entire workout unless I'm pushing speed to the max and then I'll naturally favor breathing on my right.
My first open water swim I found my self pulling to the right constantly, bilateral breathing fixed that. I also try practice sighting and breathing together because every time you sight, you slow down... There are some good Vids on the web about how to do that efficiently to minimize how much speed you lose.
Love this girl, she explains very nicely

I made the 8am spin class!!! I was starving when I was done. I didn't eat much before hand though, I just can't stomach food that early in the morning.  Does anyone have any recommendations on what to eat that early?  I like smoothies but never know if that's enough...

Ran 5K today with no walking!!!  Just a month ago I wasn't sure if I would ever get there.  Quads are a little sore but otherwise feel great.

Excellent!  Nice work.  It's all about progress.  Celebrate the victories!

I did a brick today:

1:30 on the bike w/ 3X 15 mins @ 50-60 rpm @ 85=90%

Then 45 mins on the treadmill

1 X 1 @ 4% in zone 4

2X 2 @ 1.5% in zone 4

I did yoga X 30 min.   Back felt better during the workout.  Sore again now.  Heat pad for a while.

I need a little advice!  I started tri's  last year with some sprints.  I'm looking at doing a sprint ,OLY and possibly a HIM in the fall.  I'm 17 weeks out from my race date (OLY) and there are not any plans for a OLY for 17 weeks.  Should I keep training at sprint level until 12 weeks out from OLY?  Or should I go ahead and start a OLY plan now?  I was looking at the OLY plans and the bike and swim distance are not a problem( starting distances).  The only hard part will be the run.  I'm not at running for an hour yet. So, I'm not sure where to start.  I would like to be at OLY distance by the end of May and HIM distance in September.  Any advice?

Or should I just start HIM training now and be aware that I will not be hitting my running work out times.

Look at the 20-week plans, and you might be able to start the 3rd or 4th week.  Look at the next 2-3 weeks of the plan, because the 4th week might be a recovery week and you think "I can do those workouts" and then the next week you realize why.  (Yea, you probably could do them anyway.)  So either jump right into the plan, or take a week to transition into it.

Woot!!  Big change from "I don't want to do anything."

A couple pieces of toast and a bit of cheese might be good.  Peanut butter is also good.  A little bit of protein probably helps and can be reasonably digested during the drive and while you're changing.  Too much (or too much fat) and you'll probably feel queasy if the workout intensity is high.

Have you checked out the custom plan option that the silver level has?  I created a 23 week plan for my first HIM.  Check it out!

I can't eat that early either.  If I absolutely have to eat toast or crackers with peanut butter or dry cereal - either multigrain Cheerios or Quaker oatmeal squares.  Both are great without milk.

Just popping in to lodge a complaint.
I just checked the weather, its supposed to get down to 8 deg here tomorrow and I was planning a long run... Oi. Bummer. I really want to get my long run in but darn thats really COLD! Have any of you heros run 6-7 more mile in this kind of weather? Is it a sufferfest? I sometimes have a hard time breathing when it gets that cold : /  I'M SO OVER WINTER -even though yesterday I was saying I love winter running, there is a limit to how cold I can take it! And no way can I tolerate going around and around the track at my gym 28 times!  Its going to be all about the treadmill I guess

The good thing about eating as soon as you can in the morning is that it kick starts your metabolism which runs slower until the first meal of the day..
Whole wheat english muffins with cream cheese and oatmeal are a couple of my favs.

I bought some wheat rolls today, I do love peanut butter and jelly ANYTIME! Also Nutella on bread, although I tend to just eat the Nutella straight from the jar.

The class today was great, full of great people. They obviously knew I was new and told them it was my 2nd spin class in about 1 1/2 years. A couple of them asked me to come back tomorrow to try out another instructor, so I think I will.  I didn't push myself that hard however so I think I'll be ok.  Right?

I've done 11 miles in 16 degrees, never run when the temp is in the single digits, although it looks like tomorrow's run will change that.  I have some trouble with breathing when it gets below 20.  I have to start out slower and usually after 15 minutes or so I seem to be OK.  Tomorrow will be interesting.
And I just checked the plan, and my run is 12, not 13 miles.
