IceManScott - 2011-06-22 10:28 AM Power test last night on the Computrainer.  20 min all out effort.   New FTP is 318 watts, up 4% from 306 in just two months.  Now it needs to translate to faster speed on the bike.

Great job Ice!  That is a huge improvement!

kenj - 2011-06-22 9:59 AM It isn't the easiest thing until you have done it a few times.  But basically you need to put the photos into an album, next to your name.  The biggest problem is getting the pictures under 200KB or mb I can't remember which.  There are some resizing software available for free.  The one I use is http://www.irfanview.com/  .  Once you get the picture down to size and loaded into an album, you right click the picture and click on properties.  About half way down the page you will see the picture address.  Copy this and then go and open either a forum post or blog post.  In the 2nd command line a little more than halfway across is a picture, just to the right of the anchor.  Click on that and it opens a box.  Past in the image location in the first box where it asks for the image url.  I think you have to put a name in the next box to but I have no idea what the does, but it does prompt for that to be done.

Let me know if this works or if I have confused you more.

Thanks Ken.  There was one little step that I wasn't doing right, but I've got it now.

I have a watch/timing question.  For my tri last year, all I had was a simple Timex that I started at the swim start and just let go until the finish.  It allowed me to see my overall time and if I was on pace for my goal finish time.  I didn't take my own splits, but I was able to figure them quickly during the race.  The nice thing about using this watch was that I could swim with it.

I now use a Garmin 305 (mostly for running) and I really like knowing my run pace and my distance.  Can this be worn during the swim?  I've heard of some wearing it under their caps.  If you don't swim with it, would you put it on in T1 or T2?  Putting it on in T1 or T2 would prohibit keeping a cumulative time as well.

What do you do?

I used a 305 before I got a 310xt..In workouts set the auto multisport before the race  and then hit lap button at each timing mat, I used my during the swim on my wrist and had no problems, the swim distance will be off but the time should be correct...FYI even the new 310xt swim distance is off..

Shake, how hilly is it where you're going to be racing/riding?

What do you have on your current bike?

Do you feel it is not meeting your requirements?

Just wanted to say a quick "Hi!"

Ken - your puppy is freakin' adorable

I just finished a brick... now it is lunch time and I am not in the mood for the pork roast I brought for lunch... i would really rather have a big salad... pile of green with chicken and hard boiled eggs and full-fat dressing.

Hubby's family owns property on a lake in MA.  We are heading up there tomorrow for the weekend.  I want to get in 2 - 3 swims this weekend, but I am not entirely sure how to measure distance.  I am curious to see what it is like to swim 800 yrds in open water (as opposed to the boring back and forth in a pool).

This is what I do and did with the 305 and now with my 310.  Some people use a different watch for the swim and start the garmin on the bike.  One piece of advise is to practice transitions when doing bricks and include setting up and using the Garmin.  It takes a little bit of thought to hit the lap button instead of the start/stop button or to remember to hit it at all.

Assuming you have standard cranks I would recommend a 12/27, but if you are comfortable with what you have on your current wheels, Tom is right about sticking with that.

I use a Cobb saddle on my tri bike currently.  Can't remember which model but I will look when I get home tomorrow.  Nice thing about Cobb is that you can call them and they will recommend a saddle based off the conversation about your physique and riding style.  Then if you don't like it, they have very generous return policy.

Thanks!

Tough to measure open water unless you have a gps watch you can put in your swim cap.

Have a good time! I hope the weather is good!

Not that hilly some tough climbs on different routes but mostly a lot of rollers..On my tri bike it is a compact crank with a 11/23 I was thinking of going 12/25..My road bike is standard crank with a 11/25..

I wear a Nike workout watch in the water.  My 310 is for the run.  I'd never wear it in the water.  The band once came lose running.  If that had happened in the water, bye bye $400.  Won't tell me anything useful in the water anyway.

I ride Adamo race saddles.  Love them absolutely.

Cassettes, I agree, a good all around is 12/27.  Also I'm buying a SRAM 11/28 for the IM in Wisconsin.  With a compact crack on the front, should be as fast on flats around here and be able to climb the side of a barn.

Just a small word of caution: if you train her that eating shoes it ok you don't get to complain when she gets ahold of a good one.

What kinda dog is she?

I know, so far only nuzzling them, she is pretty good about using the toys to chew on.  I kind of think she gets some comfort from my scent.  This morning she pulled my neck pillow I use for flying off the shelf and fell asleep on it.

She is a chocolate lab.

Very sweet!

I often hit the start/stop button instead of the lap button.  It would have been better if they switched the two buttons. I used my 310Xt for the first time at the tri last weekend. I put the quick relase thingy on the bike, set up the watch before the race and started it at the start of the bike. It was pretty easy taking it off the bike and putting it on the watch band. It does take some practice though and probably slowed me down for a second or two

Glad we are talking about cassettes. Julie and I have a race coming up that has a very steep climb in it. Last year I used a 12/27 and I will probably need to resort to that this year. The only frustration I have with that cassette is that I spin out so quickly.  Is there a way I can switch my 12/27 for an 11/27? (basically take one of the cassette rings and which it?) I know some combos won't work but I have no idea about what would and wouldn't work.

There are some 11/27 and even 11/28 cassettes out there, but not all of them are compatible with every derailleur and the shifting can be clunky as the jumps are real big.  I would suggest talking to your bike mechanic or bike shop to see what your options are.

I was in my local shop earlier this week and the subject of gearing came up.  He was telling me that the recent trend has almost everyone other than the real pointy end of the curve (elites) are buying compact cranks (50 X 34) versus the standard (53 X 39).  We were specifically refering to tri bikes.  I have the compact on my road bike with an 12/28 cassette and wouldn't hesitate to put that same set up on a tri bike.

I have an 11/28 cassette that I got especially for a very hilly race that I do every year. The 28 also comes in handy on some short but steep climbs on my regular rides. However, once in a while on flatter areas I can have a little trouble finding just the right gear. Generally not an issue, but I will probably switch back to a 12/27 for the Musselman HIM because, although there are hills, it is generally flatter than most of my rides. I am also considering switching to a compact crank because once in a while I would like one more easier gear so I could spin more and mash less.

Have a great weekend everybody!

I deceided to go with an ultegra 11/23 with my compact up front most races I do are fairly flat with some rollers. I have had no problems climbing where I train also the gap between gears is not as great like the 11/27 or 11/28..I can always change if I have too. This is what the mechanic at the lbs suggested also...

Best of luck to all those racing this weekend.

Let's hear from ya!!!

Quick question: is a heart rate monitor worth getting for running?

Wondering if it's something that's just useful for a short while or are there long term applications.

I only saw a race on Anthony's schedule, but I may have missed some.

Good luck to all that are racing!

In my opinion, a HR monitor is a valuable tool for run training.  Most, if not all of your run training should be in the Z1/Z2 range and a HR monitor is a very good tool to know where you are.  The problem is most people, when they begin running with one realize they need to be going slower and get frustrated.  But, if you follow the plan and build the run volume slowly, the pace will steadily increase as the HR steadily declines at the slower paces.  But it can be months long, if not years long to get there.

You can get an inexpensive Polar or Timex at most sporting good stores.

So is it possible to take an 11 from one cassette and switch it out with the 12 on my (12-27) vs having to purchase a whole new cassette?

I am not a bike mechanic, so please don't take this as a definitive answer. I think you can do it except there are 2 buts. First I think the lock ring for an eleven is different than the one for a 12, so you would have to switch the lock ring as well. The bigger thing is that in the 2 highest gears your gearing would jump from the 11 to a 13 instead of to a 12 which might be too big of a jump. Not sure if that makes sense, but here are the cogs on an 11-28 and a 12-27 to compare:

  • 11 12 13 14 15 17 19 21 24 28

  • 12 13 14 15 16 17 19 21 24 27

That jump from 11 to 13 might not seem like much, but you might find you don't like it. Here's some more info at Sheldon Brown's website: 10 Speed Cassettes.

All this gearing talk makes me wonder how in 1965 at 7 years old I was able to ride 4 or 5 miles into town on my Schwinn Sting Ray with just one gear and a coaster brake. That was the greatest bike ever!

Thanks for the info about the cassettes!  I appreciate it.

Here are a couple of pics of the brutal climb that Julie and I tackled yesterday (Julie took the pics). 90+ degrees and dehydration on top of the grade of this climb had me stopping numerous times and walking at one point. It was a very tough day.
