Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() jsiegs - 2011-07-18 7:11 AM What I think is key for me is that I had experience with cycling. Even though swimming is the hardest to learn, all you need is a pool membership. Cycling is this whole new culture and one that does NOT come cheaply! It also takes the longest time (I believe) to work yourself up from slow to fast. I really admire people who are in this sport who had no previous cycling background. If I got in, realized the cost and how fast everyone else already was, I really don't think triathlon would have ever crossed my mind. No kidding re: cycling! I am JUST starting to realize now exactly how important biking is to the triathlon. Nice insight there. I think most of us in this group are seeing that we have a lot of biking to learn. Fun topic Karla. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Very true about cycling! Running is kind of a no-brainer, but cycling.... there is soooo much to learn, and no, definitely not cheap! My dad was looking through my USA Triathlon magazine last night. He was astound at the prices of gear, and the gear itself! He doesn't understand why people would want a Garmin to tell you cadence, pace, time, distance, heart rate etc, then to hook it up to a pc so you can analyze everything, lol! It was pretty entertaining ![]() |

I picked it up yesterday and wanted to ride it last night, but I was beyond tired and thought that wasn't a good idea! I was in bed by 7:30 :/ I've tried a couple times to upload a picture here... any tips? lol I'm headed to spin, I'll try when I get back |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The guy that sold it to me told me I would go about 2-3 mph faster on this bike... he better be right, or I'm taking it back! OK, maybe not, but I will give him a hard time about it if not

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() khharms - 2011-07-17 9:44 PM I bought my bike!!! I am SO excited!! Couple things... Other than being overly excited about buying, don't freak out that it only took me 1 week to decide, lol! In all honesty, I had 4 bikes to choose from in my price range. I went in not expecting to buy a bike today, but my friend and I wheeled and dealed this guy, so I got a lot for a really great price. Accessories: So super excited, I pick it up tomorrow. They are putting everything on it, and I go back for a final fit (he had to change out the stem and seat). I can't wait to ride it, WOO HOO!!! YEAH!!!!! It is pretty! Hope you get a chance to ride it soon. Christy |

My first ride on a road bike a REFUSED to wear spandex. Uh-uh, not gonna happen, I am a MAN!! 7 years later and I wish everything I own was made of spandex. Even some of my favorite dress shirts are the "stretch" kind with spandex (or something similar) in them. I still think roadies are dorks, but now I'm one too. haha, even when I ride my new mountain bike, I'm wearing my spandex road gear...I've got nothing else! Other MTBers have been looking at me like I'm an alien.

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all,Just wanted to check in real quick....Knocked out a good 60 min run on Monday in my new shoes, and it felt great. Was only going to do 30 since I am still congested from being sick last week, but pushed through and did a full 60. Glad I did, it felt great. I surfed quite a bit the last few days, so I opted not to swim as shoulders are already sore/whooped. Tuesday I had a great day, caught a really fun surf session in the morning, and did a trainer session in the evening (30 minutes). Wednesday: strength in the AM and. 40 min run (in the insane heat/humidity!) in the evening. This morning I did a 30 min recovery spin on the trainer. Definitely needed it as my legs are rather tender from the strength work i did and the run. On a side note, I learned multi-tasking at it's finest. Playing xbox (yes, I am a dork at heart) while on the bike trainer. Makes the time go by so much quicker. The things we do... |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Checking in on this end, too. It's my post-triathlon "do whatever the hell I want and eat whatever the hell I want" week. Unfortunately, it's been the week from hell at work, so on top of my muscles needing recovery, all the added stress has taken a toll. I did run on Tuesday (felt fine) and swam on Wednesday (arms still pretty sore from the OWS). Planning a little bike in the AC at the gym tonight. I'm finding that as much as I was planning on ignoring workouts this week, I really really need them in order to stay sane. Go figure. But I'm also feeling really, really tired and slightly worn down. Do you guys find that to be typical after a race, or do you think it's just the heatwave (it's about 100 right now) and stress? |

Do you guys find that to be typical after a race, or do you think it's just the heatwave (it's about 100 right now) and stress? heat could be it. It is just draining to be out in the ridiculous heat/humidity we're having. I thoroughly suffered on my bike yesterday in it. I'm generally back pretty quickly from races (fatigue wise, not always motivation wise) because I'm so rested going into the race, it doesn't knock me out all that much. I'd say, take it easy in the extreme heat (or find AC) and try hitting it harder when it's over. Ether way, you'll be good to go when the heat is gone. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Since we're apparently into sharing photos these days, here are a few from race day. I forgot my real camera (bummer) but managed to snap a few with my cell phone (thanks Blackberry). The first is something that I have had written on my wrist throughout my last few weeks of training "Finish Strong." I always try to write little inspirational messages to myself inside my wrist based on the race that's coming up. For instance, when I was focused on the 10-miler, having a 10 on my wrist definitely motivated me to get out and get my miles in even when I didn't feel like it. Finish strong was my mantra not to slack off as the race got closer, and on race day it kept me focused - and sprinting down the last 100 meters. The next is just a pic of my bike set-up before the race. And the final is me, after the race, after I got my results, and after I visited the food tent. Where they gave us free sandwiches and other good food. I swear this was the best sammie I've had in my life. So that's it. No glorious crossing the finish line photos because my cell phone was in transition at the time, and no age group medals or cool new gear, but I thought it would be fun to share anyway.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Christy-great looking award. My daughter got a plaque from a soccer tournament years ago and called it a "piece of wood with wallpaper on it". Your's is much cooler! I would have that sucker sitting out where everyone could see it. ![]() Nicole-nice pictures. Not unusual to be a little lethargic after a race. Sometimes its hard to get back into training when there is nothing major on the horizon. I'm trying to get back into regular workouts after an easy post race week. Feels good to get back at it. Still no specific plans for the Fall but hope to do a couple more races. Anyone racing this weekend? Randy |
