Ran a 5k this weekend with a time of 29:35. I'm pretty pleased with my efforts even though it was much slower than my last 5K. We convinced some friends to come out to run their first ever race. I stayed with them for about the first 1.5miles where we averaged about an 11min/mile pace. It was comfortable and fun to chat while enjoying each others company during the race. But at the turn around I was starting to get antsy. They were okay with me going ahead so I did. It is fun to pass people instead of being passed! I pushed pretty hard and was happy with the sub 30 time given the slower first half. All that while pushing the double stroller! Best comment as I pushed my two kiddos was "Holy Cr@p!!" as I was passing some guy.
Makes me want to keep working on my running! Hard to imagine that just a year ago I was struggling to do 2miles at over an 11min mile pace. I just need my knees to cooperate now. I love this, the guy didn't just get "chicked" but got "strollered" too. Nice job! |

Veteran 478 Hoosier heartland | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED Well, I've got a swim and a run on tap for today. I have a day off, so I usually like to double up on the training. I've finally got my asthma under control which has been wonderful!! The doctor put me on an asthma maintenance medication (flovent) which has been a life saver. It's nice to be able breath when working out. When I was doing my marathon training last summer, I felt like I had to nap a lot too. Sometimes I would be reading a book to my daughter and I would be falling asleep while I was reading to her, LOL. Take advantage of naps, your body needs that recovery. Hope everyone has a great day. Congrats Adrienne on your hockey win!! |

Coastal Carolina | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED Nicely done on the hockey tournament Wow Keye that's a great run- negative splits with a carriage? That's great I kind of fell off the wagon for sunday and monday training wise but I'm back at it today. This is one of those big tests on desire to train weeks for me, work 7 of the next 8 days- if I can get my workouts in this week it'll be aboost for the peak periods mentally when I have days off to get the workouts in. |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED jimmyb - 2012-01-29 10:18 AM In the winter I ride my bike trainer in the garage where the temp can be as low as 20 degrees starting out. I have a space heater that works well within about a 3 foot radius (despite what it said on the box ). Once I warm up, I turn off the space heater and I can break a sweat. The next challenge that arises is when I get hot and turn on the fan. It cools me well, but ends up blowing ice cold air on me. I plan on buying a "real" space heater this week but before I do, does anyone have any other suggestions? Is there something else I'm missing? 90 min run today. Did not get to the pool. Late night movie (Mission Impossible) with my 2 boys and their friends. Long bike on tap for tomorrow. Wish me luck!!! Hmm, can't help you on the climate stuff--it's pretty much always hot and humid as hell here, even indoors with aircon! I really wanted to see MI Ghost Protocol in Jakarta but just couldn't squeeze the time in ... (and napped ferociously when I did); I don't think it's playing here in Bali anymore (only 1 theatre, 2 screens on this island!). However, the pirated DVD has been out before the movie came out in the U.S.! (That's usually how it goes here). How'd your long bike go? |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED jogo - 2012-01-30 1:57 AM Yanti, I love your menagerie photos. I am such an animal lover. My daughter is home from Lansing right now for wisdom teeth removal so we have bonus kitty, Ms. Charlotte. Still praying to the big 3 for Gollum (and Suicide). Hoping kitty returns home well and was just out on a bender or something. On a training note, I am exhausted. I feel like I could nap for 2 hours after every workout. Just close my eyes and go to sleep. This happens every time I train for a marathon. Does anyone else find that they need naps? Am I just totally abbie-normal that I want a midday nap after a long workout? Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. I miss them terribly. On my long run Sunday I stopped to kneel and peer under a parked car because a calico kitty (like Suicide) had dashed under it ... sweet pretty cat, but not her Ramping up always makes me tired-er ... then when you're carrying a big training load, that makes you tired, too ... you know about Paula Radcliffe's famous DO NOT DISTURB everyday 2-hour naps, right? And she is already one efficient training machine. I am SO BAD at getting enough rest/recovery, but ... I really do know its importance and I'm trying to change. People in general (especially Americans--no siesta! What???) don't get enough sleep to begin with, and when we put training on top of that, you do need additional rest. It's not the killer intervals or long hauls that make you stronger. It's the FRICKIN' SLEEP afterward when your body has the chance to devote the energy to repair, restore, strengthen. |

Good luck on the running ramp-up ... you're already the ultimate body listener and remember the extra stressors call for sharp nutrition and additional rest. It's part of the prep that keeps you focused and sharp, AND gets the willies out before the races. The good news here is that I LOVE FOOD. In all seriousness I have been turning some of the focus of my treadmill runs (which are notoriously boring) into food runs. I get on there and run and don't allow myself to get off until I have eaten and drank everything that I brought. I don't know if this is an effective method but so far so good (IE I haven't puked.) I have even brought some of this method to my group runs, trying to impress my fellow runners with not just quantity, but creativity of food. They said they won't be impressed until I can pull out celery sticks and apply peanut butter on them while maintaining pace. I consider that a challenge. |

Just smear the PB and eat the celery, already! Now what would be really funny is running along with a PB jar stuck to your face while you are trying to lick the last remnants of PB off the bottom. THAT, I want pics of. I once toasted Pop Tarts, poured a glass of milk, and ate them all while on the trainer. |

Expert 866 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED Monthly Totals:
Overall a pretty solid month. My biggest improvement has been in running both in speed and endurance. I need to do more time in the pool. Not sticking to the Fink Plan exactly as I often modify things based on schedule, how I feel, or just to maximize the fun. Weight down to 194, feeling pretty good about that considering I was up to 211 around Christmas time.
How has everyone else done?

Trauma #2 - got lapped on 50s by my 'normal' lanemates..last month I was leading this month trailing. Can't wait for Thursday's swim test! Head in the game..focus...eyes open!
