BigDH - 2012-04-03 9:42 PM so work has again exploded for me. And I have the flu, and maybe a cold. Second day in a row without a workout. Woe is me.

No bueno! Feel better soon.  Good on you for allowing your body to get over the flu/cold.

I got a question about dropping time in the pool.  And I know I dropped the ball on creating a "swiminar" of sorts, but I found a great video that shows the proper flutter kick.  Here's the response I sent:

The most important thing in swimming (any stroke) is the kick.  It's the first thing I teach my kids and we spend a lot of time kicking.  Here's a video that I think is a great tool to use to learn how to flutter kick properly:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73njoEbYvIY&feature=player_embedded

Once you've gotten the kick down, the next part to work on is rotation.  Think of your head and spine as a spit and the rest of your body is rotating around it.  The head and spine should never be out of alignment even when breathing.  With open water though you will have to be slightly out of alignment considering waves and splash from other swimmers.

The shoulders should touch your chin and your hips should be vertical to the pool floor.  A good drill for this is kicking flutter kick with your arms by your side.  You might want to start off looking up (backstroke style) until you feel comfortable enough to turn onto your stomach.  While your kicking, keep rotating your body from side to side.  Your hips and shoulders should move at the same time and your legs should stay straight while kicking.

You can add in other drills to work on the catch up front, keeping your elbows high in the water and during recovery (over the water), and the finish.  Take a look at the isport videos similar to the one I posted above... they are pretty informative and it's always good to see the drills and how the are supposed to be done.

It's a real abbreviated version of swimming, but I'm able to get on the site more, so if anyone has anymore questions about it, please send me a message and I will get back as soon as I can.

Speaking of the yucks:

I have had a low grade fever, joints on fire, headache and feel pounding in my head chest and back, weak feeling and shortness of breath.  Flu like symptoms without the flu.

A few years back a dr. tested me for Lupus and it came back inconclusive but he thought I had a mild form of Lupus...never concerned myself too much with it bc the only symptoms I ever had was some joint pain and maybe some swelling.  This week however was horrible!  Training was a bust!  I did get a 5K in on Sunday but it was not pretty for sure!

Left work early on Friday, I NEVER leave work sick, slept Saturday and felt weak but pretty good on Sunday.  Monday rolls around and not so much...maybe I am allergic to week days?  So has anyone had any experience with this disease?

I don't know much about Lupus. Hope it isn't though.

Being sick sucks but the fever is the worse. Beats you up more than a super hard workout, so takes some time to get better. I always forget.

If you are wondering about people diagnosed here just throw a post out in tri-talk. IF someone knows something they will let you know.

So it started innocently enough. It was supposed to rain yesterday morning but it never so I didnt have to force myself to ride. So good ride. Started to rain at lunch but a killer 13 k at lunch which was awesome considering Wednesday and the 23 k.

So good, then it starts to pour. Them it starts to snow. A bit. So I get out if there. First 13 k or 30 min are okay. Then the flakes get huge. I mean giant motherfucking snowflakes. Anyways. I am drenched to the bone. I can hardly feel my hands. I had to get off at times to walk to warm up. My drenched magic mitts r useless. Man.

I get home and I just about die. My hands start to thaw and the pain was incredible. New definition for pain. So cold. So cold. Last 13k took 60 min darn near. Shivered in a tub for 20 min.

Good day.

So here's the deal, when I don't imbibe in my favorite beverages, I seem to lose weight.  When I imbibe, I can never moderate it to just one, or two, and usually have 3 or 4 and occaisionally 5.  This would happen every other night, or nightly.  Then my weight is consistently hanging around 185-187.  I haven't been imbibing the last few days, and I'm back down to 182, hoping to get down to the 170's by the end of May.

Hmm.  Maybe I could go on a reward system of only imbibing on weekends...  IDK.  Any thoughts?

I had a thought.  Whiskey=less calories.  This may be a healthy alternative.

Whisky=more drinks...I say go with 6 drinks max, Friday/sat/sun. This is what I try to do. I usually imbibe more on a friday. Try for double workouts that day to account for it. I also tend to eat more on the weekends!

I don't know man. I gave up drinking 4 weeks ago and I have seem to have more than replaced the caloric intake with chocolate.

I used to be like you with the drinking. But I would encourage you to consider the 1 beer or 1 whiskey a night routine. Every night. It is really quite rewarding.

x2.  That's awesome Darren.

I have gone week long stretches, and feel great and have results on the scale.  But then I always go back to it and gain back up to 185+.

I like the idea of 1 beer, or 1 whiskey an evening, but will power to do so is never there.  Thor, I like the idea of limiting to weekends, but it never happens for me.  When I played hockey, I tried to only drink on game nights and weekends.

I think I'm at a point where I will decrease because I want to weigh less bad enough.  I am ready to commit, and this alone is important in setting/attaining any goal.  You have to be ready to commit.

There is no "one size" fits all answer, everyone is different. My dad quit cold turkey 30+ years ago after he made an of himself at a wedding. Of course I have one upped him but still drink...I hang out with a lower class of friends so I don't look so bad! :-)

I mean I used to drink quite a bit, maybe once or twice a week. It was not good for my health. Being hungover. I pretty much stopped the partying activity 3 years ago. I found out almost immediately that drinking to excess frequently really effected my late night / early morning fathering responsibilities.

Anyways, then I started the beer a night thing. I figured since I used to drink maybe 15-20 over the span of 2 days that a daily thing would be better than a binging thing. Now it took a couple months for me to get into it. And I wouldn't have a beer every day. Some days I wouldn't drink and some days I would fall a bit into my old habits and have 5-6.

It is strange to say it this way, but I perceived. I am also quite busy and don't usually have time to drink until 9 p.m. and usually in bed by 10 on weeknights. Regardless, I really didn't get much out of one beer. It was gone before I started it. But the funny thing happened that if I drank every day I was less greedy when a bigger opportunity to drink was there. And then I started really liking only one beer, like one beer was enough. Which was never the case. Funny.

That said, I never completely mastered the art of drinking with other people. I was always the guy who had to drink the most.

Now, I am on a 4 week dry run. Weirdest thing since this Doctor told me I was poisoning myself. Every time I look at a beer I think, "sure is tasty poison, but I am not drinking poison".

The whole thing has been really strange. Almost like he hypnotized me somehow.

Good for you. Kids definitely put things into perspective! My kids are the reason a lost weight as well as cut back on my drinking that is for sure!
