uhcoog - 2013-01-17 6:22 PM What's everyone's take on oval chain rings.

Can you explain a bit about bike components...for example, I know there is a big chain ring and a small one right...but oval Vs (circular I assume) ??

Could you also explain more about wheels...I read tons of posts and other pieces of information about wheels and I know it would be a good investment to upgrade and I know a bit about the aerodynamics etc.. but I really lack a more comprehensive understanding about the differences in wheels....For example, Kelly - I noticed the picture of you on your bike and your wheel set up...why did you choose that vs a disc, vs something else?

Yep.  Oval vs. Circular.  They're supposed to increase cadence and eliminate dead spots in your stroke.

As far as race wheels it can go several different ways.  Torodial (sp?) vs V shaped, depth, etc.  Supposedly if you ride under 24 anything over 60ish on the front is just a waste.  Deeper is better on the back.  I really like what Flo is doing for the price point.

As much fun as bike toys can be -- its all about the engine.  Race wheels will not make or break your race.

This is how I feel about all these toys.  Sure, they're nice.  If you can afford to buy them and want them, then by all means go for it. Do you have to have them to succeed in this sport?  Nah.  Plus, these things are acquired over time.  I'm all about keeping things simple.  I feel as if I have the bare minimum of equipment, clothes, gear, etc., and I'm ok with that.  Keeping it simple has served me well.

Having said that, I would like a triathlon bike.  I think I put my time in on my roadie and I'd like an upgrade.  I earned it  If I don't get it, I'll ride the roadie another year and hope for a new bike next year.  It's all good.

So I officially heard today that I didn't get that job in California.  Can't say I'm upset, it was not quite the right fit, I was compromising on where we want to live, and they were certainly compromising on location since they want someone in Texas.  Anyway, I'm kind of relieved and can start planning the rest of my race schedule now.  Also, most of the "stress" at my work resolved itself just before Christmas.  There's a lot of potential opportunities here in Alpharetta, so we'll see how that plays out.

In other news, I did an LT run test tonight and my HR reached #'s I don't recall seeing very often.  My prior LT (on several field tests) was always between 178 - 180.  Today my average over a 5k time trial was 185.  Does that mean anything?  Am I in worse shape, better shape, didn't push myself hard enough on other tests, pushed myself too hard on this test?  I'm not going to read too much into it, just reset my zones, but curious why it was higher than I expected.

Better things will find you elsewhere. The job just wasn't meant to be.

x2!!!

Thanks Michele & Jen. Honestly it's ok. The thought of selling our house (we bought when the market was at it's peak, selling now we'll take a beating), packing and moving to a super expensive place, my husband finding a job, our son figuring out if he stays or goes, was just too much right now. The job itself was perfect, but the location and logistics just didn't make sense. In hindsight we probably should have taken a look at Texas...

You can't really push yourself too hard.  5 bpm difference is about 3% different than your previous tests, however normally LT does not go up -- usually it goes down by about 1 bpm per year as we get older.

If your going to use a 5K TT as a stand in for threshold, you should drop the first mile of the 5K TT and just look at HR over the last two miles.  There can be lot of variability in the first mile, which can throw off the results.

I did a 15 minute warmup w/ some strides thrown in, then did the 5k time trial. The first mile of the 5k was the lowest AVG HR, but do I still drop it if I did the 15 min. warmup?  Using just the last 2.1 miles would put my LT at 186 so not much difference.  I was just surprised for it to go up, but as you say it's only 3%.

Still drop the first mile.  I would also re-test in 4-8 weeks just to confirm.  It is a little strange for Threshold to go up (but not unheard of).  If you were dealing with chronic fatigue during the previous tests, your HR could have been low and now that you've resolved that fatigue its gone up to its "normal" level.

I want to say there are coupons out there from time to time that get it down to the $160 area.

I like my Bell Javelin.  I don't really like to wear sunglasses on the bike so the fact it has a clear visor is a bonus.  Better than having to buy clear lenses for sunglasses.

I have never tried oval chainrings, but for me, there are some other things I think I'd prioritize before I thought seriously about getting them, like a triathlon bike, a Power Tap, and aero wheels.  The concept makes a lot of sense to me - making it easier to pedal in the traditional dead spot in your pedal stroke - but I just haven't ever really thought seriously about them.

As for wheels, I have had wonderful luck for my road bikes with custom wheels.  Joe Young (http://www.youngwheels.com/) did the wheels for both my road bikes, and they are light and bombproof.  What's nice about them is that you pick the components, and they're tuned exactly for you (i.e., your body weight) and what kind of riding you're going to do.  I've never had aero ones because I've always focused on climbing, where the aero qualities don't help so much, but when the time comes to get aero wheels (and when I get a pass from my wife), that's certainly who I plan to call.  I haven't compared prices recently, but as I recall, they're even comparably priced to the well-known brands.

I've never ridden any of their wheels, but I've heard lots of really good things about two other wheelbuilders - Ergott (http://www.ergottwheels.com/) and Psimet (http://www.psimet.com/).

We watched it - and I have to say he was pretty honest.  There were a couple of times I wondered if he was telling the truth (like the accusations of him forcing team members to dope or they'd be dropped from the team, which he denied).  I'm sure it was implied that they had to, and he did say he was the leader, and such "leading by example" gave the perception it was necessary.  He admitted to that.  I have to respect the fact that he would not give names when asked.

I'm looking forward to part 2 tonight.

Other than denying using PEDs after 2005 (very convinient considering the applicable statute of limitations on potential breach of contract claims from former sponsors).

Agreed - that was a bit questionable.  I told my husband I need to see at timeline starting when he first started doing tris as a kid up until 2013.  And on that timeline when he admits to doping, when he was acused of doping, everything.

The other thing that bothered me (I can't quite remember the details) was the test he failed but he was not worried because it was going to be covered up.  And then I think he donated a big chunk of money to that organization???

So, now that Lance has admitted his dark secrets, who's next, Ray Lewis, admitting to the murder he got away with back in 2000. Of course, he'll have to wait until after he retires this weekend when the Pats win.  Maybe he'll reach out to Oprah! You know, if Oprah forgives, then everything is ok.

Made some huge gains this week.  I ran a total of 3 miles!!!!!!!!  PAIN FREE.  No pain in the surgically repaired nerve area.  No swelling from ZR trainer rides, and the 1.25 mile and 1.75 mile (12 min pace) runs on the treadmill.  I just need to keep reminding myself to ease into running again. (I better not have just jinxed myself)

On another note, I am still going to PT, because my foot remains cold, 24/7.  It's been that way since Sept 2011.  It is now being related to bulging discs from that same accident.  WTH, I'm 35 and on paper, I'm like 70.  Anyway, still a big win for me this week, mentally and physically.

Excellent news Jeff (except for the foot)!

On a different note, I thought you guys said Augusta 70.3 was flat and fast???  The write up does not sound like that at all ....

Located at the Augusta Rowing Complex, athletes will enter transition and  prepare to start their single-loop, 56-mile bike ride throughout Georgia and  into the countryside of South Carolina. The hilly terrain of this one-loop  course will spread out the field and be a true test of stamina, proving it to be  anything but “peachy.”

I said Augusta was a fast swim (if there's a current), rolling bike, and flat run.  I ride a lot of hills, and I mean a lot, so Augusta was no big deal to me.  But it's not flat by any means.

Are you going to do Augusta?  I hope so, I will come cheer for you!!!
