Jamie--just reading your story freaks me out.  I had something far less invasive happen when I was out walking Cooper and it scared the heck out of me.  I hope it never happens again.  Was your dog scared?

Jason--you're crazy, but I have a friend just like you.  They live in Traverse City and while beautiful the summers are so short and the winters so long!

We're bracing for another round of storms.  Ice storm tonight, then rain, then snow.  I hope they're wrong.  I don't want to miss Master's class tomorrow morning. Teeth are fine by the way.  Never had any pain once the anesthetic wore off.  Good stuff.

Jamie-glad you and Gus are OK. Very scary.

Suzy-glad the root canl was relatively pain free.

Nothing too exciting going on here. Short swim and then a run this evening. Legs were still feeling the low cadence intervals from last night's bike workout. Swim only tomorrow....leg rest day.

He definitely wasn't thrilled with what was going on, but he really only had a second to react before the dog was all over him. He's also about as good at fighting as I am, which means not at all! I'm pretty thankful this evening!

Also, went to Master's class tonight, and you know what sucks: when the real swimmers are all there. Suddenly, I'm in a lane with a guy who's fast, and fast people on either side of me and we're trying to do 100s at remotely the same time. It was not easy...but I can at least say I hung in there

Suzy -- Glad you made it through your root canals okay. I've had more than my fair share of those things -- ugh.

Rene -- Great job on the treadmill -- hopefully, you kept a bucket nearby!

Jamie -- I'll never complain about being nipped in the ankle by a Dachshund again. That sounds like quite an experience. Glad your dog is okay. :-)

Last few nights I've been laying out my training plans for the summer including all my races. It gives me something to do when the snow refuses to stop falling. I have two A races this year... sort of. I have my first Olympic distance on June 15th. Although it's my first go at that distance I'm going into it expecting certain things because most of my training already encompasses the distances, so I don't need to stretch out at all and mentally that is huge for me. I know physically there is still a huge challenge ahead of me to get to where I know I can be, but at least the mental side I can put to ease. My second A race is my HIM which is August 24th. There's 11 weeks between events and I was just looking and there is a 12 week Oly to HIM bridge plan on here that Mike Ricci laid out and it's super detailed and looks like an awesome plan. I was really worried about how I would bridge that gap so I'm psyched that I found this. He has a really good 12 week Oly plan that I may use going into my June race which is still closer to 20 weeks away but the next two weeks get really messed up for me with my wife going to Europe and then myself going to Florida. Now the snow just has to melt so I can get my longer rides and runs in.

Suzy--let me echo what everyone else said, glad the oral surgery went so well.

Jamie--Wow, you got off lucky. It is great that you and your dog are doing fine. I'm glad you kept your head and didn't go off on the owner but he needs to make sure that this never, ever, ever happens again. What if it was a kid with their dog out there? I was mauled by a dog many years ago and still carry the scars. My tolerance for aggressive dogs that chase me is zero. I am a dog lover but I never want to go through that again.

Jon--sounds like your plan is rounding in to shape well. It is so nice when a plan can fit right in to your schedule. It makes it so much easier.

We are bracing for the same storm that Suzy is getting. My run tonight pretty much has to be outside so it might get a bit interesting to say the least. The last 20 minutes are supposed to be at 6:35 pace. Hope the sidewalks aren't too icy at that point.

I swam this morning and had one of those totally rotten, no good, very bad swims. I just could never get it right. I was slow and uncoordinated and generally a rock in the water. I guess I shouldn't be surprised after almost a week away from the pool. If my usual on/off pattern holds, I should have a great day in the pool tomorrow.

Yep, I felt the same way. I was talking with my girlfriend last night about it, and she was saying the same thing. She has two dogs, and would've been entirely helpless in that situation, which is scary. The thing is, it was definitely a not-so-savory neighborhood, and I definitely felt like an outsider in it. I'm not apologizing for the owner, but I also didn't feel like it was a good time or place for a potential confrontation. I'll definitely be avoiding that area from now on.

I'm pretty tired from yesterday; swim practice seemed to take a lot out of me. I'm also noticing that my weight is up, to about 161, but I really think a lot of it is upper body muscle from my Master's practices. All of last season, I swam alone, and rarely swam hard. Now, twice a week, I swim really hard, especially since I'm swimming with better swimmers I'm trying to keep up with. My times reflect that, which is nice; I am swimming at paces that I never thought I'd reach. Basically, I'm saying that I'm technically heavier, but it's due to muscle mass, I think, which is something I'm ok with. I also anticipate dropping weight once summer comes and I start doing 5-7 hour bike rides in 80-90 degree heat! I've got a bike ride later today, and I'm hoping the weather stays nice enough that I'll be able to do it outside. I hope everyone is having a good week!

Hello my fellow multisport friends!
Tax season is in full swing and my play time (read: computer fun time) is severely limited. But I'm trying to catch up here:

Mike - that's fantastic what your coach said to your daughter. HEH!

Randy - your son will never catch you on the bike. Especially if you give him an old heavy steel bike with crappy wheels to ride.

re: my working from home - I think I get MORE work done at home for a few reasons:
1. No phone calls
2. No one to come in to my office to distract me
3. I don't go into anyone else's office and get distracted
4. I'm accountable! If I don't get my work done, they'll know something's up - so I'm motivated to work so I can KEEP working from home.
5. Pjs and a hoody are so comfy in the winter

Suzy - glad the root canals went ok. I've never had them but I hear they aren't as big of a deal today as they were years ago - you know, technological advances and all.....My husband has had a few.

Jason - it's all about how your bike looks while you ride it - not how aero it is Money well spent, I say!

Jon - my first roadie was a Giant and they'll always have a special place in my heart. AND they give you great bang for your buck!

Bryan - buy cheep tires for use on the trainer!!

Jamie - how awful - I'm glad you and Gus are ok!

I hope I got it all!!

All your talk of TRAINER rides finally inspired me to hit the spin bike for 30 minutes this am. I would have gone longer but I wanted to spend extra time rolling my cranky tibial tendon. It's not happy with the recent increase in running volume.

Ok, that's all - back to work! Have a great day and hang in there - it's almost FRIDAY!!!!

Super happy that I was able to make it to Master's swimming this morning (is this really me talking? ) and I had a decent day (and I won't say "for me"). The ice storm ended up going a bit north so it was rain for Madison which was awesome.  We're bracing for snow and 50mph winds later tonight.

Jason, please be careful running if it's glare ice.  No reason to get injured just to get those 6:35s done!

Jamie, I have to agree with you.  I am more tired from harder Masters swim sessions than my solo pool efforts.  I think that is a good thing.

So, I had my last hard bike workout and brick run before my indoor/outdoor  tri on Sunday.  I have to say I am really looking forward to it.  It'll be interesting to see all these college kids compete.  I hope I beat some of them!

Glad to see everyone checking in. really busy morning at work then a 3700 swim squeezed in that I really did not want to do.. That's it for my swimming this week. Somewhere around 9500 yards but I feel like I'm slacking compare to my other weeks so far this year. Up until about 4-5 months ago that would have been a big week.

I was thinking about Jamie's dog story and it reminded me of something that happened to me on the bike 2-3 years ago. Not nearly as scary but still not a good situation. I took a different road, thinking it was a shortcut, to get back on my normal route. Headed down the road and a few hundred yards in these 2 big dogs came running out of their yard chasing me. I was able to sprint by them and they soon quit the chase. So, I keep going and about 1/3 mile down the road it dead ends. I turn around and the dogs are now laying in the middle of the road (very rural area). Crap, I have to ride back by there to get to the main road. I actually thought about calling my wife to come pick me up as I was only about 15 minutes from home. Finally, the dogs wandered back to their yard and I was able to pick up enough speed on the way out that they only gave a half-hearted chase.

Another dog story. The path where I usually run is right next to a moderately busy 2 lane road in  a residential area. 10 foot wide concrete path with beautiful scenery and well shaded. I was about 2 miles from home on my way back when a big dog started following me. As he does this he is running back and forth across the road and people are honking and obviously think I'm just letting my dog run around with me. Finally, I'm able to grab the dog and check his tag. Its further to take him to his house by this point than to take him to my house. So, I drag the dog (tag says his name is "Horse"...which is pretty accurate) all the way to my house and then call the owner. She drives to my house and Horse happily jumps in her Jeep. She says thanks and that Horse does this all the time. What the hell? Not a very good owner if you know your dog is getting loose and you are not doing anything about it......would have hated it if Horse had been hit by a car.

Randy, both of those stories are scary!

I got a good bike ride in today: it was 70+ degrees, so I was able to do it outside! I wasn't all that motivated at first, but got into it once I started-there's a lesson in there somewhere. It's still early, but I'm feeling pretty strong on the bike. I don't ride using a powermeter, so I don't have any specific data to back myself up, but my speed seems a lot higher than last year. I averaged 20ish on Tuesday, and just about 21 today. I can tell a difference in two ways, for the most part: My steady pace is much faster than it was last year, and I recover MUCH faster from a hard effort. I tested it by getting out of the saddle and pushing hard up a few steep hills, and I was able to recover pretty quickly. It's nice to know that training is paying off!

I'm heading to the mountains this weekend, planning on doing some mountain biking Saturday. I don't own a mountain bike, so I'll rent one and see if I can avoid breaking my neck! I hope everyone's Thursday workout was as good as mine!

Jamie- Glad to hear you guys made it out ok. I have a 10 year old Golden who definitely is more of a lover than a fighter. Great breed.

Jon- Which Oly are you doing? I'm planning on King Pine on 6/22.

Had a trainer melt down last week. After about 30 minutes or so the resistance would get crazy hard and even locked up the rear tire a couple of times. Oh well, it was given to me last year so it didn't owe me anything, besides I got to go out and buy a brand new Cycleops. My sit bones are sooo out of cycling shape. Started doing one of the base building programs on TrainerRoad. Having a little trouble getting run motivated again, it was easier running in the slop and cold when i had a race hanging over my head. Now not so much. It's supposed to be a decent weekend so I'll get my butt back out there.

Suzy - Good luck in your tri on Sunday. Show those college kids how it's done!

Jon - Sounds like a good race schedule this summer. You'll get a good build up to the HIM in Aug.

Jason - Hope you got your run in before the big storm. Icy runs don't sound like much fun at all.

Randee - Very cool that you get to work from home. It works for some people better than others.

Randy - Yikes, I'm glad I don't have any dog stories like that to tell!

I squeezed into my wetsuit today for my first OWS of the year. It wasn't as cold as I thought it would be.  I think the water and air temps were about the same (~58-60F). But it took me a while to get into a groove. My sighting is a little sketchy. No boats on the lake this time of year -- nice. :-)

Happy Friday everyone. Easy run later for me........and maybe a nap. Stayed up late, till 10:15pm, to watch the UNC versus Duke basketball game. Then, severe thunderstorms had the wife and I up from 2:00-3:00 am.   Can't believe we didn't lose power.

Have a good day everyone!

I'm doing one in Ashland, MA. It's where I ran a HM last year. Nice area, kind of hilly but that's ok. It's where the Boston Marathon used to start actually, so kind of cool. I didn't know about King Pine. I'm doing this one because my buddy is doing his first and it's a half way point for us. I'm also throwing in a few sprints, one in July in Amesbury, MA and possible one in August right down the street from my house in Kingston, NH. Those would really just be glorified brick workouts but they are both local races that I like to support.

My bad swim/good swim pattern failed me today. I had my second day in a row of feeling horrible in the water.

Must press on but it can be very disheartening when one's gains disappear for no apparent reason. Every once in awhile I wonder why I don't just become a runner and give up the ongoing struggle on the bike and in the pool.......

Hang in there Jason. I always feel awful swimming after an extended time out of the pool. Maybe an easy session with some pull work and a few drills will get you back in sync.

I would be ecstatic with anything even resembling anyone else's bad swim days in the group! I keep reading and hearing that at some point it just clicks...yeah, I'm ready for the click.

Did my longest trainer ride ever today at 2 1/2 hours. Ughh...Hope I can skate for hockey later! And I'm not exactly sure how I am supposed to follow it up with another 2 1/2 hour ride tomorrow. At least tomorrow's is much easier from an FTP standpoint.

Have a great weekend everyone, we are headed out to my youngest son's hockey tournament in a little while here.

The WIAA swim state meet is here this weekend.  A friend of mine (who is a very good swimmer herself) has a very talented son.  He won the 200 IM in 1:53:59 and just won the 500 free in 4:39:82.  Can't even imagine what that feels like.

Going to be a very interesting week for me coming up. My wife left this morning for Spain for 7 days so it's just me and my son who is only 2 1/2 years old. He'll be in daycare like normal during the week, however I'll have to pick him up at 4, which my wife usually does, so I'll be just squeezing in 8 hours at work which leaves very little to no time at lunch for a swim or run. I can't go out for a run at night or in the morning and leave him alone, and I don't really want to do a ride on the trainer in the basement while he's up sleeping on the 2nd floor. I have to dig out the old baby monitor and see if I can get that rigged up so I can at least keep an eye on him if I'm on the bike. He's a really good sleeper and I'm not worried about anything happening, but if I'm on the trainer I just feel like I'm in another world and no way I'd be able to hear anything in the house. Looks like it might be a week of P90X in the spare bedroom so I can keep an eye/ear on him while he naps and sleeps. Sorry in advance for not keeping tabs too closely this coming week, hope everyone has a good one!

Nice. So far my confirmed races are Nashua, King Pine and Mascomaman. A few of my friends are doing Pumpkinman. I'm trying to decide on that or go for a little marathon redemption at Bay State. I won't be able to do both. I'm sure there will be a few others thrown in during the summer. Perhaps our paths will cross.

Great work. 2 and 1/2 hours on the trainer is a really long time. I just did 90 minutes and I don't think my rear end could have taken another 5 minutes.
