How's everyone's weekend shaping up? I did an open water swim with the Newbie Tri group here in Singapore. I don't often get to show up because wife works most Saturday mornings but mother in law is in town and babysat so I could get out.

Sunday morning is a sprint distance duathlon. 3km-18km-3km is the format. Using it as a hard brick day and transition practice.

Matt - Crush that race and show your mother in law who is boss! Seriously - enjoy every moment and don't forget to post the post race beers.

Anyone else racing this weekend besides Matt, JOhn, and me?

Not sure but they did have a free week subscription to try their unlimited App usage of videos that you can just watch on ipad or whatever. They require visa#(which I used a just about used up visa from walmart so if I forgot they keep charging you.) Depending on your setup it will show cadence/heart rate etc.

I have been alternating between a downward spiral and a very dark place...

However - I need something to push myself when I am biking. Any idea of something that I could put onto my iphone to give myself the same experience. I listen to music but that hasn't been doing the trick any more. I'm not even sure such a thing exists. Thoughts?

It's really the #%@!*^$ trainer I hate. I'd rather do almost anything than ride on it for any length of time. Some guy on one of my my other tri sights is doing a five hour trainer ride this weekend. I'd rather eat my own vomit.

I guess it just goes to show that you and your young son are mentally tougher than I am

Coupled with the fact that my HR right before starting was in the low 90s, I'm worried it might be a sign of over training. I'll be keeping a close eye on things for the next few days.

Just a thought - the fatigue is a pretty good sign that maybe you need a day off - especially if you can't get the HR up.

Part of the HR thing might be that you are getting a lot stronger as a cyclist and it's time to drop down a few gears to get that hr up. Remember - you are a machine after all!

Hey - I took a video of my morning run... check it out (seriously watch this video - you will be glad you did) http://digg.com/video/free-running-is-intense

Seriously - all I did was just over a stick on my last run.. and even that was tough

Last night - took the boy out for wings - that's good pre race fuel right?

Good luck to all the racers tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!

I seriously considered taking that test day, Dave, I really did. In the end, I went out for my planned Z1/2 run this morning followed by yoga and strength training. HR was back to normal this morning (high 50s) and I had no trouble getting it up into Z2 (and beyond!). Overall, it felt good today. Tomorrow is a scheduled rest day and I plan to take advantage of it!

Hi Folks - I posted this to the main page - but thought I would throw it up here as well. I need a plan.

I'm looking for a training plan (book or online) I can use for IMMD which is in 28 weeks. Here's what you need to know about me:

- I'm a back of the packer - finished IMMT in 2014 in 16:22/ Rev 3 Maine in 7+ hours
- I'm often injured - so I'm looking for a plan that has two weeks of hard training and 1 week of recovery
- Money is tight so hiring a coach or buying an expensive plan is out
- I'm current not swimming (inflamed bicep tendon), my long ride is 2 hours and since I'm training for Boston - I'm running 15 miles for a long run
- I don't care how long it takes me - I just want to avoid injury and finish

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

My HM and tri PRs were based on pre-race pizza and wings, so YES!!

Dave, the beginner plan here on BT looks pretty good, and it's free.  It's set up as 3/1 but I think you could just do the 28 training weeks something like:

1,2,4,1,2,4,2,3,4 (9 weeks - slow build up)
5,6,4,6,7,8,9,10,8 (up to 18 now)
11,13,12,14,15,17,16,18,19,20 (28 total)

The only time you don't do 2/1 is the last four weeks, because 19 and 20 are tapering.  16 is the biggest week, 4 weeks out.

I love playing around with this stuff.  :-)

Hey Everyone,

Been flat out busy so I need to go back and read through everyone's posts for the last week or two. Hope everyone is doing well and getting some training in.

It's been a crazy week, I've been home one day in the last 2 weeks. I flew to London last Sunday after a week in NYC and DC. Didn't do any running but walked about 35km in two days around London. I was checking out one of our newer pilots on International flights so it was busy trip for me. We flew home Wednesday, and then left for Fort Lauderdale on Thursday morning. You'd think by now I'd be used to time changes and jet lag......no, took me 3 days to clear the fog out of my head.

I did get in a nice 16km run on Friday and an 8km on Saturday. I was going to run this morning, but we were kicked out of the hotel at midnight due to fire at the hotel. Hallway was filling with smoke and water was dripping out of the ceiling in the hallway. We packed up our stuff and got out, passing firefighters in the hallway. I suspect it was something electrical by the smell of it. So we bailed out of there and headed to West Palm Beach at 1am. No vacant hotels for miles.

I guess I got about 4 hours sleep last night.

We fly home this afternoon, and tomorrow we have a snowfall warning issued .......30cm. Yes, spring in Atlantic Canada is a wonderful time of year. No road biking for awhile.

On the plus side, I did get to spend some quality time in some of London's finest pubs, sampling their best pints, and the Elbo Room in Lauderdale is great place to tip a few while watching the craziness of Spring Break.

Have some down time coming up soon, need to catch up on my swimming and biking.

What's left of a pint of London Pride

My biggest problem is food. I'm weighing in at 235 which is the heaviest I've been since 2012 when this group helped me lose 95 pounds.

I went through a similar patch not to long ago. I left teaching after putting 13 years into getting my education and teaching for 8. Had my calf act up for over a year, threw my back out and am still seeing PT to help manage. The stress alone with the teaching prof. can lead a person to drink. It did for me, which didn't help.

I gained to 224. I was depressed, first time in my life. I had to find reason again. It didn't come over night for me. I got initially inspired back in October from you (DQ). You've been on here since the beginning of BDAS. I find this incredibly inspiring that with all the work/life/injury stress you've endured you continue to rise up and compete. You completed IMMT. You've gotten through and trained with countless injuries. You will get through this period. I know you will.

Because of your mentorship, I'm still here. Not as active on the board as I once was, but climbing back up the ladder. Thank you for your support, and let us know how we can support you.

Hard week at the office. I have a very physically all job as a painting contractor. I woke up a couple of mornings this week and just had to bag it. I got my mid week speed run In Friday afternoon. I broke into the 7:xx time for my pace with a 7:45/mile pace o err 4.6 miles. Pretty happy to see that again and a good direction for the future.
Got in my 9.5 miler and took off 7 minutes from two weeks ago. Another step up.
Next week I'm moving up to 11.5 miles. I have a 25k later in April, and a marathon planned for the first of June. Trying to build up miles without injury, but have to build enough to run the distance again.

Looking forward to reading some race reports!

Looking forward to the race reports from yesterday.  Glad someone is out there toeing the line.

A solid week - first time in a long time I've felt my planned Sunday day off was earned.  This week is just trying to build on last week, taking care to slowly build the run volume back up.

Weekly totals:

2 swims, ~ 2150 meters
4 rides, TSS = 236
4 runs, 9+ miles, rTSS = 100
45' of ST and core

Had an absolutely fantastic (if hellish over the last couple miles) first Half Marathon yesterday!!! It was awesome to be there with Dave Q. The bad weather held out for us - no snow or even cloud cover until we were done. The cold really came in during the race though and the wind picked up especially on the ~4 miles or so we were down the peninsula surrounded by ocean.

Post race beers with Dave was awesome as well. Very much deserved! And we were hysterical walking up the stairs and down the 2 blocks to get back to our cars from the bar. Especially up the stairs... Neither of our legs would work at all!

Dave thanks again for making the trip out and I sincerely hope the achilles calms down in a hurry and you can get back to normal training life.

My biggest problem is food. I'm weighing in at 235 which is the heaviest I've been since 2012 when this group helped me lose 95 pounds. Permit me a walk down memory lane for a moment. It's November 2012. I've lost the weight and my racing season is over. It's a sunday morning so I weigh myself as usual - and I weighed in a few pounds more than I had the week before 171 instead of 169. I remember having a panic attack right then and there - oh my god, I'm going to get fat again. All my hard work is going to be for naught. And then I had a thought that calmed me immediately... I lost the weight with the help of this group (Cynthia, Thor, Kevin, and DH) and as long as I stay a member - there is no way I will ever go back to being 270 again. And so, I need to reconnect with this page and with you all. I need to build the relationships with you - the new people as well as the old - that will give me the power to put the chips/pizza/second helpings down. So far the external help I've gotten from Kate, John and Scott has certainly helped.... but its like the train that has fallen off the tracks. Part of the reason is because I haven't been a regular poster and I need to do that more often. because I desperately need to get back on for my own health, peace of mind, and so I can hear those magic words again - David Qua (hopefully they will pronounce it right this time) you are an ironman. Just a thought and thanks for the support and letting me unload.

You can do it, David. Just take small steps. Don't try to accomplish everything all at once. Weight is an issue almost all athletes face and coupled with body image issues that most of us have beyond just as athletes, it's easy to be very hard on ourselves over it. What you should be doing right now is less. Don't try to train more. Don't stress yourself about how many workouts you're getting in. If weight is your main concern, focus on what you're eating. Make gradual cutbacks to your intake. Set MFP to maintain your current weight and track everything for a week. If you stay on target calorie-wise, bring your intake down one notch and do it again. Just keep repeating weeks if you find yourself going over all the time. Losing weight isn't about cutting back calories its about developing good eating habits. It takes time to do that.

Was planning on it anyway that was the motivation I needed - lol. I made it public, but the race reports here seem to be finicky (ex. no matter how many times I select 'Half Marathon' as run type, it saves it as blank)

Great race and way to hang on through the end.

Your RR brings up a great point - it is SO easy to overcook the first 1/3 or 1/2 of an HM.  I've had the wheels totally come off - as in I can walk and that's it - the last 2 miles of an HM where the first 10 miles felt great.

HIM Training Week #2 started here!

Morning: 3 mile run with the dog
Mid-Morning: 2000 yd swim (without the dog)

Both felt great! I really do think the nutritionist might have been right. I have been very careful about eating 3500-4000 calories a day over the last three weeks. I initially lost 9 pounds. Last two weeks have been the same weight, no loss, no gain. I think that initial weight loss was more about water retention than anything else, as I had just returned from a week in Vegas when I had the test done. My workouts are rocking though! I feel strong, well-rested, and ready for the next one when the first is over. As hard as it is for me to believe, having been told my whole life to eat less, I think I wasn't eating enough, by a lot.

Congrats to Dave and John on the HM, even if it was a little rough at the end!

    Weekly goals:

-New FTP test for the bike (I've been guessing based on an old test all winter).

-One additional ride beyond the test.

-Get in at least three runs.

-Final week of no alcohol (actually through Tuesday), so I'll need to pick out something nice for when we're done. Any recommendations in the lager or hefe categories?
