Getting divorced has really thrown me for a curveball but I'm going to make it my goal to become healthy and happy in 2019.... More on that later. Most importantly - thanks to Gretchen for getting us going for 2019. As you all know - she is a machine. I'm so glad you're part of the group - I need a little of your spirit as I try to get back on the wagon. Speaking of - I'm off to the gym for the first time in a month. I'm gonna bike for 20 and swim for 10. Baby steps. I'll check back in later but I want to wish everyone a safe and happy New Years Eve! How did you like the Christmas Ale and the Edmund Fitzgerald? They are made by great lakes brewing in cleveland. I love the Christmas Ale - it is beloved in Cleveland. Hope you enjoyed it! |

Edmund Fitzgerald has become “my beer” over the last year or so. It just seems to be the one I gravitate to when I’m at the store. Started 2019 with a run. Nice and slow...almost painfully so, but I’m trusting my coach. |

Let's talk resolutions for a second. What's on everyone's list for things they want to do better this year. For me, I have a few things on my plate: 1) I want to lose 120 pounds between now and my 50th birthday in February of 2021. That gives me 26 months to make it happen. My plan is to lose a pound a week between now and July 1 and then 1.5 pounds a week for the rest of the year. That's approximately 75 pounds and would put me within 35 pounds of my goal. 2) I need to get back into exercising and the way I'm going to do that is to sign up for some races. I'm going to do the Dopey at Disney world next January. And I'm hoping to do two or three sprints this year. Maybe next year, I'll sign up for a half or a full ironman. Those always seem to motivate me. 3) I need to get my eating under control so I'm going to start logging my food onto my fitness pal. I've also got to start eating better. I eat way too many carbs. I'm not talking about doing Keto - I just need to eat more fruits and vegetables. As for beer - I had two Boddington's with one of those nitro cartridges - so fricking good. I haven't sat down and decided on goals for 2019 (other than finishing MiTi), but I'm toying with the idea of 450 workouts. Anyone use zwift? Coach has me on it, but I'm not sure I see the point. I can accomplish the same thing by just watching my power numbers, right? I don't really give a darn about watching my avatar ride along the route. What am I missing? My coach made it sound like the second coming! |

Still toying with the idea of joining you for the 2020 Dopey, but just need to get my 2019 plan set up. Since the Dopey training takes up a good chunk of 2019, it would mean I needed to be mostly done with Tri by September or so, and round these parts there isnt much tri over the summer because it's too hot. Gretchen - I haven't personally tried Zwift (or Rouvy or any of the virtual cycling programs) but I really want to. As far as I can tell, it's combining cycling with video gaming. It's not supposed to take the place of riding outdoors, but it is supposed to add life and drive to your trainer workouts. I think it appeals to those of us who could easily lose 4 hours trying to level up or anything else video game related. Not sure about Zwift but I think Rouvy has real video uploads of real routes around the world. So you can do things like visually climb Stelvio (with the corresponding resistance difficulty via a smart trainer if you have one), in place of that pesky 'having to travel all the way to Italy' thing. Previously you needed a grand or more to get into a smart trainer, but nowadays Tacx and Bkool have them for like $300. Ideally for me this would mean my two weekday training rides would be indoors riding around the world, then my long ride on the weekend would be as normal. |

I stayed mostly in shape, running and biking while living in MA, then HM training (running only) once I got to FL. The idea was that 2018 would be just that and 2019 is when I'm settled in the house and can get back to it. Multisport doesn't happen much in FL between June and September because it's too hot. It's like winter in the North, but the opposite. In any case this means that half the calendar is between February and May, which leaves me focusing on May at the earliest for a Sprint. Top item on my personal bucket list is a full IM by the time I turn 50. I'll be 45 this year, so an HIM seems like a good goal for 2019 esp if I can do it late in the year, which gives me enough time to learn to swim 1.2. I struggle so badly with the swim. Was looking at Challenge Daytona, put on by the owners of the infamous Challenge Roth. It's pretty much in my backyard, adds the cool factor of swimming, biking, and running the infamous race course, and it's in early Dec so fits my plans. Plus, not that there's anything wrong with the actual Ironman brand, but its nice to support the wider array of multisport organizers so we don't get stuck in a monopoly. Plus at least this year in the inaugural edition there was a lot of star power - Andy Potts, Cam Wurf, Sarah Haskins, Meredith Kessler, Matt Russel. What are the chances I can switch gears from HIM to the Dopey Challenge (48.6 over 4 days including full marathon) one month later? |

I spiraled a bit around new years, but now I'm ready to get back into my routine (I feel like I've said that a lot lately but the holidays make it so hard!). Need to get back in the pool first and foremost, so I might try to make it to practice tomorrow morning in Towson. I'm not drinking for most of January and all of February. Need to reset my body, lose some weight and feel really good again. I don't have resolutions per se, but just intentions for the new year. Mine are: 1. Meal prep, meal prep, meal prep! I want to make this a priority, over spending time with friends or anything like that. I got an instant pot for Christmas so that should help! I want to lose at least 10 lbs so this will move me in that direction. And it will save me money! 2. Be consistent with workouts - I need to get in to a really good routine that includes swimming, running, might even get on my trainer that I bought but have yet to use, and also yoga, stretching/foam rolling and boot camp. I set up a little mini gym in my house (see attached pic) and plan on using it while I'm watching TV/between episodes when I'm on a binge or when I can't make it to the gym. 3. Only do things that make me happy/bring me joy - I feel like I load my plate up with activities because I want to keep certain people in my life but really need to say no when I'm not feeling something (these things often involve spending money on booze when I don't even really feel like drinking). This will lead to me being healthier because I will not be doing the things that distract me from my health related goals. Basically all my intentions are focused on being good to my mind and body and focusing on my happiness. I was at 162 lbs this mornings. I'd like to be down to 150 by summer, which I think is very do-able. So no new mentor groups this year? At least we still have each other! |
