here's a little update on me - from my blog - as you know, i'm lazy efficient like that

more about the ortho yesterday -

first of all i have to say the office amazes me.  i got there at 4:30, inlcuding x-rays and the appt with the dr i was in and out in 20 minutes - have you ever heard of that?  i walked in the door, they took me back to get x-rays, then to the exam room.  i figured it would take a while for them process the x-rays (apparently processing film is a thing of the past - now processing only refers to thinking things over )

anyhoo - i was in the exam room, thinking i wish i had brought a book - and bam, there was my x-ray right there on the computer screen in the room, then the 2nd, then the 3rd -

the dr came into the room - examined my 'sort of normal right ankle' (his words) for comparison to my left ankle - still some swelling and some pain - i didn't think there was pain until he pushed on it - :/

long story short (ok, i know it's too late for that

the ankle is healing - he wants me to continue to wear the air cast for another month - working my way toward not wearing it by my next visit.  it's for stability, making sure i don't twist it and fracture it through - i guess i'm still at risk to fracture it all the way through

at the next visit we'll talk training (hopefully) -

in the meantime i need to schedule a bone density test - he doesn't think that's an issue, but just to rule it out

reality check - if, and it's still an if - i can start running late july/early august - that would give me 4 months until the Philly Marathon - not likely, by then i will have lost all the run base i had gained, and more to the point i would be coming off of an injury - looks like it will be the 1/2 Mary - not ruling out the full, but trying to be realistic

Hi all -- I"ve been on vacation for a week and had missed 3 pages of posts by you all! Wow! So much going on...injuries, new babies, flu, surgeries scheduled, first tris, Bill is actually swimming

Quick update from me -- trained throughout my vacation and could get some internet access but it was quite spotty. Got home late last night/early this a.m. and back at the bike today with a hilly bike and short run (brick). I've got an int'l distance on Sunday but haven't tapered, still not peaking until my HIM in August. While on vacation my son knocked heads with DH when flying off the Seado and ended up at ER (hi givemashot!) and had stitches and Cat scan. Thankfully no broken bones and now he has a killer black/blue/yellow eye, some blood vessels in his eye broke so red eye and a 4 stitch cut just below eyebrow. He said he feels like Frankenstein. Eventful to say the least and a good visit with my cousins/adopted family.

So, I've missed you all and looking forward to being able to keep up a bit better.

Carry on...

Hi all- went on a nice OWS swim today with a couple friends, followed by a bike ride. Absolutely gorgeous weather up in the mountains today! We have had weeks of rain and crazy thunderstorms and cold weather, now yesterday and today have been beautiful and in the 90's. WOW.

While I was on the bike ride today I was thinking how lucky we, as triathletes, are. We get to participate in so many activities and go so many places that most people can't even envision. And I mean, how lucky am I!?! Just look at all my BT/triathlete friends! I love you guys!

Lynn--ouch! Sounds like he's taking the new badge of courage in stride. I take it he didn't have any fractures on the CT? My daughter fell and face planted on our stairs a few years back and had an orbital fracture, which landed her in the hospital overnight, with many follow up vsits to the specialists. Its all good now, though. Hope he heals quickly.

Yanti--Get better! I hope your tri this weekend goes well, and that you are able to enjoy all of the festivities.

Beth-- Get better! Sounds like you are getting there, one day at a time, though. Here's hoping that trend continues.

TR-- Get better! (wow, I am starting to feel like a broken record, LOL). Hope the foot really is ok. Make sure it is though. You don't want to jeopardize what's left of the tri season. (((hugs)))

Art--congrats gain

Sharie--good luck!!!!!!

Stacie--Glad you are feeling better!!!!!

Bill--you swam? Again? And you're going back again soon?   *I think I just fainted*

Have a great Friday everyone!!

Art,
Congrats!! What a miracle she must be.

Sharie,
Again, Good Luck! I am so excited for you.

And an update on me. My tri season is over before it even began. My tri was Aug 2, but I have decided to go ahead and have surgery asap. That ended up being the end of July. I am upset that it is so close to my tri I feel like I could have held out 2 more weeks and raced, but honestly as my training has ramped up, so has my pain. I doubt I could sustain this pace and able to race anyways.

In desperation, I thought about doing one this weekend...but really, who am I kidding. I have heard some ppl say triathletes tend to have demons they are running from or something to prove (either to themselves or others). I never gave it much thought until recently. I actually am feeling like less of person for not doing mine and feeling like a total and absolute failure. I barely even want to go out for fear of seeing ppl who might ask how my training/and or race is going/went.

Lauren - that is EXACTLY how I have been feeling.

I think there's something to having something to prove ... it's almost like I feel people will think I'm a failure or a quitter because I'm not racing ... and I feel like that by being injured - I'm weak somehow.
I totally understand your feelings right now. Know that you are not alone.

Bethie and Yanti - this is where you come in with your amazing words of wisdom.

Oh my!

I'm not sure my words will be wise, but they will be from the heart -

as far as the injury thing goes, and feeling like i had something to prove - been there, done that - i completely understand how you are feeling

a couple of years ago, i was really having problems with PF - decided to push through, 'be strong', prove i could do it all that stuff - i did - i raced and i had a great time, proved i could do it and then i was out of commission for 6 almost 7 months

after that, i have tried to take a different approach to listening to my body - i  listen to my body- or try to

i don't worry about having a peach square every day, i do my best to follow my plan, if life gets in the way - it gets in the way  - reality is, most of us (speaking for myself)  are doing this for fun and fitness

if my body tells me i need to rest, i rest - sometimes that's a tough call - but there's a difference between fatigue and pain - fatigue i often push through, pain i pay attention to

my daughter said something interesting to me the other day (i was whining a little about not racing ) - sort of put things in perspective for me

i was telling her about a gal that stopped me in the pool and asked if i was training for something - i said no, i was training for a 1/2 marathon, ultimately a marathon - but i'm not now due to a stress fracture

my daughter challenged me - and said, i know you're restricted to swimming, but aren't you using that as a way to keep up your cardio and arobic endurance?  so that when you are cleared to run, you still have a lot of training - and won't it be better than nothing?

it got me to thinking - how can i train for a marathon while swimming

no one in this group is weak -

my goodness, if someone has even trained for a triathlon - even if they haven't completed it, they have accomplished something most people haven't even dreamed about

my thoughts, my advice

take care of injuries sooner vs later

we are all winners here - hold your head high

Thanks to all for the inspires and well wishes!    I am doing pretty well with the nervous/worried part.   Practiced transitions today....just set up an area, dd held my bike, I got wet, ran out the door, put on shoes, etc, then ran around the yard carrying my bike (worried about thorns), then back to T2.   Did it a few times until things went smoothly.   It was really pretty neat cuz dh, dd and 18yo ds all got involved.

We will go to Cheyenne tomorrow afternoon.   Check in and packet pick up is 2-4pm with some beginner meetings stuck in there.    A good friend (also my kid's dentist) offered us his studio apt that is attached to their awesome house so we did that and canceled the hotel - nice savings for sure!    He is a 2x Boston Marathoner and has recently decided to try to qualify for Kona so he is really into my doing this.

I really like what Amy said and have been repeating it to myself....on Sunday you will be able to call yourself a TRIATHLETE!!  That is the bottom line and it brings me great peace.    I have no doubt that I will have tears in my eyes as I cross the finish line.

I will post a RR as soon as I can...probably Monday since I will do what the rest of the family wants after the race is over on Sunday.

Thanks for all the support!

Sharie - you'll be awesome, cuz you ARE awesome!

Relax and enjoy the event - it's your first, so it should be fun.

A little story about my first tri .. back in 2006. I had fun. I didn't "compete", I just got through it. Races since have been for pushing myself. I had some good friends there cheering me on - and I kept looking up from the pool swim to wave to them ... the bike I coasted - enjoyed the ride, waved to my friends ... the run I half limp-walked (had some Achilles issues, surprise suprise) and didn't push myself, just took in the scenery. Basically I really enjoyed myself and the day and the experience, I took in every moment .. I still remember every moment.

Crossing the finish line was one of the best moments of my life. I have a great photo of myself as I was about 20m out, HUGE grin on my face - I framed that photo so I always have it to remind me how good I felt about myself that day.

I cried coming up to the finish line .. we came down a big hill so the finish line and transition area etc was visible to us below, but then we had to loop another block before coming into it. When I saw the finish area, realized I was only a block away - that's when the tears started. But by the time I crossed the finish line - this girl was nuthin' but smilin'. ;-)

And my business - I named my business after my race number at that triathlon because it was such a defining moment in my life - "423 Nutrition and Fitness Consulting".

I cannot wait to read your RR!

Edited to say: I didn't look at my time. I still don't know my swim/bike/run/transition/overall times ... I didn't and still don't care. Races since have been about how fast I can go. ;--)

TR - thanks for sharing your story!  Loved it!   And it made me remember that on this first Tri, I need to ENJOY and HAVE FUN!  It is good for me to be reminded so I can push back that competitive urge!   When I think of the race in the mindset of fun, I have this calm peace inside....when I think of it in terms of times/competition I get all nervous and jittery!

The only thing I am truly concerned about is my pre-race nutrition.  Nutrition is the one thing I seem to fight with and I am sure some of it is due to my previous adrenal struggles.      I tend to have GI issues in the morning when I am just at home relaxing but that is probably due to the fact that I am easily distracted from eating and suddenly it is 9am and I haven't had anything but some almonds and coffee.   Right now I am planning on taking some fresh eggs with me and eating one with a bagel along with a SMALL cup of coffee at 5am.   All of that should be well digested by 8am when my swim will start.    I plan to take one Accel Gel between swim and bike and then munch on a few Luna moons as needed.   I know a lot of people don't do much of any supplementing in a sprint, but I do believe my body needs the extra support in order to finish well, especially in the heat.

Best finish packing so I can be ready to leave on time!

That sounds like fairly solid nutrition. Make sure you HYDRATE well TODAY ... lots and lots of water today. Have a good supper tonight - I've heard some people say lately that carbo-loading the night before doesn't help, but IMO it is a good idea. And tomorrow - don't do anything different .. don't shock your body with something new. A bagel with some PB or nut butter or an egg 2-3 hours before start time, then a banana or apple shortly before the race should serve you well.

Good luck!

Well I'm off the clinic to actually work today. But tomorrow I'll be thinking of you!

Sharie PM me your email address ... and I'll send you my "protocol" for Sports Nutrition ... it's pretty basic, it's the bare bones protocol that I then work from to prepare detailed protocols for specific athletes ... but it'll give you some good basic information.

Good afternoon Manatees!

I LOVE this group! I can't thank you all enough for the encouragement and insight you all have given me! (too many exclamation points?....nah)

Just a quick note before I take a nap. My race was great! Still alot of room for improvement but I took 13 minutes off last years time on the same course (last year was not good) and came in at 1:56:33. My goal was anything under 2:00. I made myself relax in the swim and that set the tone for the rest of the race.

I'll catch up tomorrow.

SpiritFire - 2009-06-27 7:45 AM Lauren - that is EXACTLY how I have been feeling. Lauren, TR, Bethie Love, and everyone else who has struggled with injury--and Bethie Love, I adored your words of wisdom as I always do, and they lift me up--

I have now had a full year of not doing any races at all (okay, well, there was that 300m New Year's Penguin dip in the ocean, but nevertheless). I fought my way back from a staggering illness and had a lot of life stuff happen, and my "training," if you can call it that, has been spotty at best and essentially nonexistent for the last couple months.

Like Beth, I once learned a lesson the hard way--I was discharged from a hospital on a Thursday morning and did a marathon that Sunday because I was not willing to give up all the training and travel arrangements, etc. etc. Anyhow, I paid for that decision for the next six months with my health and ultimately wound up losing a good job because of it, too.

Those are just my experiences. Now here's the wisdom I've gotten from them--I truly understand how crushing it is to have your training not come to fruition--but I also know the consequences of not putting yourself FIRST and TAKING CARE of what you have so that your training will STILL pay off in the future.

You aren't losing anything--you are GAINING your health and fitness. You are doing an amazing and very wise thing by indeed taking the very best care of yourself you can. That is what REAL ATHLETES and WINNERS do. They train smart, they heal smart, they recover smart.

Allow yourself the loss--and it is a loss. But also know that this is not a diversion from the path--this IS the path. I truly believe you will gain and learn things from this experience that will be invaluable to your future training and racing. In fact, it seems you have already learned a lot since you are doing the BEST THING!!!
