Swim was almost 5 min slower than last year.  But this is the first time I've averaged more than 20mph in a race... WOOT!

mdfahy - 2010-05-28 12:11 PM OK, so here it goes, THE question I've been wanting to ask....

Am I ready to take on an Ironman distance race?
What does it take in terms of training, does it take 20 weeks or years?
Being my first year, my plan was not really to do this distance and after the episode at the end of my race I wonder if that was a sign to slow down my overly aggressive racing schedule.

What I was originally thinking of asking the group after my HIM was is it reasonable, rational, realistic to think I could take my training up a notch and target the Beach2Battleship Ultra distance tri in Nov. 2010?  www.beach2battleship.com

Obviously, my goal would be just to finish the race, I really mean it this time!  ;~)

Now, I am wondering if I should push that distance off until 2011 if I decide to do it?

I am also considering Chesapeakeman Endurance Festival (Sept. 2010), they have several events, like the 2.4 mile swim, an AquaVelo of a 2.4 mile swim and then 112 mile bike that I was wondering could be used as my checkpoint for B2B.

http://www.tricolumbia.org/ChesapeakeMan/

Thoughts?  Am I crazy?

You can do it. No rush. Completing and competing are different.

billsorg - 2010-05-28 1:33 PM I am totally on the fence about a full IM.  I finished my HIM last year, but practically crawled across the finish line.  I decided this year to really stick to the training plan and finish the race.  I'm finding the workouts to be very manageable, so now it's got me thinking about Lake Placid 2011.  But I'm going to wait and see how my HIM goes in September and then decide.  Hopefully IMLP won't be sold out by then.

I think you should discuss it with your wife & family.  That's pretty scary having you in the hospital for a couple days after your last race.  It seems like a pretty quick turnaround from, "I'll see if my family let's me do another HIM again" to "I'm ready for an IM", IMHO.  But I understand how this sport sucks you in and you want to keep going further and faster!

I think I rushed it in my case. I believe that we would all be better served racing shorter faster for sometime before going IM.

Ironman is a huge time commitment for both you and your family. It requires a buy-in from all parties effected.

Again no reason to rush.

Congratulations on the awesome results!  Bike over 20MPH...WHHEEEEEE!  Sounds like you had a great time, except for the rough swim, don't worry about that though, it will make you a stronger OWSwimmer having that under your belt.

I'm glad I wasn't this guy, this was big news in Orlando when I was there.  And I'm glad Virginia doesn't have any gators!

Thanks for all the advice on IM racing, that was all great advice.  It's definitely a big decision that I will continue to think about.    I hope everyone is having a great holiday weekend.

That's an awesome race Bill.  Bike at 20.7 is serious.  And that swim sounds crazy, good job getting through it.

Burned at all?

Surprisingly not at all, I put on an alcohol based spray 30SPF before I left for the race in the morning and considered putting more on at T2 but didn't want to take the time.  I was a little pink on just top of shoulders the next day and couldn't even feel anything, so the one coat of spray worked well through swim, bike and run.

What a great race Bill! OWS in rough seas is really hard - you are just trying to get through the distance - with no real ability to focus on form (at least that is the way it is for me). Your bike split is fantastic!

That's an awesome race report Bill.  Sounds like an amazing swim.  I'm sitting here looking at the wind blow white caps on the lake thinking no way am I swimming in THAT, and then I read your report of the ocean craziness.  I guess I need a serious dose of HTFU!

In truth, I'm also quite tired after 5 1/2 hours in the car today going to the NAGA (North American Grappling Association) Jui Jitsu tourney with my 13 year old.  He won his division for his weight class and we have the samurai sword award to prove it!  We were shocked since he didn't expect much.

First OWS planned for tomorrow, so hopefully the wind does die down a bit.

Warren - that's great news! Congratulations! You must be so proud of him.

I hope you got a swim in - it was a bit windy here today - but still warm enough to get into the water.

I had a really great bike ride today. I can easily talk myself out of doing my outdoor bike rides - but every time I do get to ride outdoors, I really have such a good time. (Warren - this is a bit of repeat from the other thread, sorry about that)

While riding, I realized today how much I like training...specifically - biking but the other sports too. I love being outside, going slow enough to really enjoy the scenery around me, hearing the wildlife (we live in the boonies), seeing the beautiful farmhouses, the blueberry fields (Maine blueberries are really the best), and the small towns. I also realized how much more confidence I have in what I can do. Last year, I was just trying to make it up a really hard hill, make it through the sprint swim distance without drowning, run the whole distance of a 5K. This year I don't have any fear that I won't make the swim distance. I rode right up my nemesis hill without stopping much faster than I could last year. I ran a whole half marathon a month ago. This really has been an inspiring path for me to go down - to see what I am truly capable of and how lucky I am to be able to do these things. I need to remember this when I get down about my race times...

I hope you all had a great weekend. I couldn't have asked for a nicer one (with the small exception of LOTS of fighting between my two daughters...they got put to bed early tonight). Thanks (as always) for the wonderful words of encouragement, the inspires and the perspective.

That's funny Jennifer, my wife and I were just commenting on what a great weekend we had besides how much our two oldest were fighting today!  Must be something in the water in New England.

I had a great time swimming in Lake Winny today.  It is a great to swim in the lake as opposed to a pool.  There are a few land(water?)marks at pretty close and known distances, so I can get a little of the pool feel for speed repeats but I have to sight and it's just more fun in a lake for some reason.  The water wasn't too bad in terms of temperature, about 66, but I did wear the wetsuit.

Have a great week everyone.  Get after it, we have some races coming up next weekend!

I have a funny OWS story from the swim yesterday.  So there is a buoy about 50 yards from our dock.  Some of my swimming was out to the buoy and back.  I know from my pool swims I use about 16 or 17 strokes per 25 yards.

Part of what I'm trying to learn to do is swim straight - not just sight but actually swim straight.  And yes I do bilateral breathe so it's more than just that since I tend to pull to the right.   If you've read my sprint race report you'll know my navigation is less than superb.

Anyway, when I'm in a pool I spend a few laps swimming with my eyes closed to help out.  Yesterday, on one lap out to the buoy, I sight up to stroke 17 and then I just swim without looking.  Wouldn't you know that on stroke 34 I actually hit the buoy with my hand!  I couldn't believe it.  Of course, on the way back I used my new found confidence to almost swim into the rocks I was so far off course, but it was fun while it lasted.

Awesome Warren!

It is really misleading in OWS - sometimes I think I am really pulling one way and I am so completely in the opposite direction when I finally pop up to sight that it's laughable. Hope you realized the error before you hit the rocks! Not enough docks are in the water up here yet so I have to find an unusual tree/rock to try to sight off...lucky you having buoys!

Races this weekend from what I could see in the logs:

Aaron has a 70.3.

Jeremy is doing a century ride (Tour de Cure Century).  Is that to raise money Jeremy?  Let me know and I'll add to the pot.

Jennifer is running a 10k.  Is that race on the Peter Ott loop you run sometimes Jennifer?

Good luck and finish strong.

Subject: RE: Aaron Davidson's Group -- Closed.
hi everyone!

sorry I haven't been around much. I went on a short vacation with the family and haven't done any activity since Thursday. I'm hoping to get back into some type of routine next week, being off for a week has taken a toll on me energy wise. So, I'll get back at it!

You all have been great with inspires about my upcoming Tour de Cure ride, something the American Diabetes Association puts together. I'll be riding 50 miles with some friends and a few members from Team Type 1. We did it last year and had a great time and should have just as much fun this year.

Its great to see all the activity that has gone on over the last week - and GREAT JOB BILL on your race!

have a great rest of the week and fabulous weekend everyone!
