Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good run today-4.25 miles which is good since I have been neglecting my running due to weather. Here the hill I always talk about. The view is from my yard and I have to go downhill before I hit the base of the climb. It is .73 miles from my driveway to the top and the elevation gain is alsmost 300 feet. I ride my Mt Bike up it for the single track rides and walk-run it to start every run. It is loose dirt so the roadie is not an option Edited by Artist 2011-02-13 1:02 PM (woodhill.jpg) Attachments ---------------- woodhill.jpg (40KB - 15 downloads) |

![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I had an awesome training run today, thanks to Kelly. It definitely gave me the confidence that I needed to go into Hyannis. We completed an extremely hilly 20K in Southport. We paced ourselves really well, and passed so many people because of it. I probably looked at the garmin 3 times today (after I got scolded not to look at it anymore) as opposed to looking at it close to 300 times, as I typically do. I felt very faint at the end but was fine once I got calories in me. I need to fuel better before Hyannis, and there were two great parts about today. First, I didn't have any GI problems, which makes for a really good run for me lately, and second, I bought the most amazing cupcakes after the race, which I cannot wait to eat!! Hope everyone had a great day. Happy training to all! |

Brought the pace down to 7:30s by the end to finish strong. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() rizer22 - 2011-02-12 2:21 PM Today was my first actual running race. It was Cupid's Chase 5k in Hartford, CT. This morning was about 9 degrees when I woke up, but by the time the race started it was prob about 25 degrees. Perfect weather. I started with a very slow pace warm up for just over 15 minutes. I finished that about 15 minutes before the start of the race. Not sure if I should have waited to do my warm up closer to the start or not. I beat my goal, and finished 23:38, averaged a 7:21 pace, and finished 31st out of 297 and 3rd in my age group. Fun day for sure. Fantastic job! Congratulations! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm retaining a bunch of water, so I'm not even weighing in this week. I ate like crap the last few days. Too much sushi on Friday and too much guac yesterday. I'm hoping to pick up the running this week, as my pain has been minimal. I'm going to take it very slow!!!! There's still a glimmer of hope for the half in May, though I definitely won't set a record or anything. I haven't really logged many miles over the last 6 weeks. Pretty sure my run fitness is way, way down. Just curious here......for those with experience - do you get to warm up in the water before the start of a triathlon? Is it allowed? I swear, it takes me at least 300 yards to feel like I am comfortable in the water. Once I hit that point, I'm good. Do you run a little bit before you warm-up in the water? I'm clueless. I certainly take advantage of it to aclimate to the water and get the jitters out Most races let you get in the water pre-race -- I've only been to one or two where you can't get into the water at all. Normally, if you arrive early enough you'll have time to get in the water and swim for a while. In addition, lots of people take short rides / runs pre race to get warmed up. If there are enough wave starts (e.g. people going off over the course of an our or two) some people will bring trainers and spin their legs out while waiting. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Did a Zumba class this morning with my wife - besides being slightly spastic and unable to coordinate my top half with my bottom half, I did fine. Then it was 5 miles on the 'mill. Tomorrow should be nice enough so I'll run outside. I'm freakin' exhausted tho. 15 miles yesterday really took a lot out of me - 17 next week is going to be rough! |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 44 miles in on the bike today. Slow but finally got far enough out of town for some hills. Yay. Really wish I could get out with someone that I could put the hammer down and they'd push me. Contemplating driving an hour and a half to the other side of Houston to ride with a buddy that surely can keep up. Weighed in at 175.5 today. Week of eating horribly and my 2 year olds birthday did me in. Back at it tonight. |

It took me a little bit to get used to mine and now it doesn;t seem as hard I actually borrowed it from someone I think is a millenium. I texted him and asked him if it was suppose to be so hard he said he didn't but that why he let me borrow it. Edited by pbrown70 2011-02-13 5:50 PM |

![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() rizer22 - 2011-02-13 9:02 AM So I offcially lied (not purposely) in my race report. The results were posted last night online, and changed from what they posted, post race. Anyway, there were 247, not 297 runners, and I finished 4th in my age group, not 3rd!! I didn't liek their timing system either. They didn't use the chips in the bibs or on the shoe. They just had a guy clicking something when you crossed, and another guy writing numbers down as you finished. So the people that started in the way back, their times were calculated when the race started, not when they crossed the starting line. Either way, the times I posted on here were from the Garmin, and were accurate, and also matched what they posted since I started at the front of the race.
Have a great sunday. 5 mile run for me today. Great Job! |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() With people thinking about new running shoes, I thought this might be useful. I used Newtons for 2 years and loved them, but Tim Snow had some interesting thoughts on Newtons: "Ah Newtons...They make me nervous. Very nervous. First of all, they force you to run on your forefoot, which is good except that it is not necessarily a natural change in foot strike. I would prefer to see a fore foot strike due to an improvement in running mechanics, not a change in equipment. The change in equipment may change where the foot strikes, but does it change what happens above the knee? I want to see a fore foot strike due to a proper forward lean, with the strike taking place below, or slightly behind the body/center of gravity. My BIGGEST concern with Newtons is in the great potential for stress-fractures, as a result of the forced fore foot strike, keeping the calf contracted. The calf tightens, and can begin to place unnecessary strain on the soft-tissue in the shin area, potentially turning into a stress-fracture. IF you must run in Newtons, then I would highly recommend a true focus on Eccentric Calf Raises, all year round." |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I missed my Monday morning workout this morning. Went to see Lion King the broadway show in Providence last night, didn't get home until after 11:00. If you have not seen this show, it is highly reccomended. I will do my 60 minutes on the trainer tonight. Spinnervals, Suff-o-rama. I am pretty sure I am ready for speed workouts, once a week anyway. This is the perfect DVD for it. Happy Valentines day |

Good luck let us know how it goes. It went pretty well. I had a niggling pain toward the beginning, so I slowed myself down. The more relaxed I kept my body, the better I felt. I'm going to ice on and off today, and I'm going to take a bath once my kids are down for the night. I think I'm going to have to be very conservative right now and focus on stretching before and after my runs. I'm going to start a half marathon training plan next week and see how it goes. I'm not sure I ought to be doing any speedwork right now though. What do you all think? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks Kelly for opening up the "door" for one more! Name: RockTractor (Jay) Story: Like Kelly, I come from a competitive swimming background. I swam in high school, summer leagues, and even a short time at college level. Because I was lacking in focus, at the time, academics and fitness were replaced with partying and general "dumb-assery". I bounced around a bit trying to find a direction and eventually I ended up in the military (USAF). While enlisted, I got married, had a daughter, and got my life back on track. A few years later my marriage ended in divorce and shortly after that my enlistment ended. I returned to school (Purdue) and graduated in 1997 with a degree (BSEE). I took a job in Albuquerque, NM (where I still reside) working for Honeywell (where I still work and met my current wife). Family Status: I have been happily married to my second wife for over 7 years. We don't have any children together - just our crazy dog (Abbie). My daughter from my previous marriage is now 21 and has a little boy (I'm a Grandpa!) that is way too cute for words. Current Training: I run, bike, and swim as time permits. Currently, this amounts to anywhere from 6 to 10 hours a week. My current monthly goals are set in terms of distance (200 mi bike, 60 mi run, 12 mi swim). These numbers seem to sufficiently challenge me to reach on a monthly basis. I train with intensity (I'm always trying to best myself on pace, distance, hills, power, etc) but, I lack any real plan or focus. I know I could use my time more wisely and that is what I am currently trying to figure out. 2010 Races: Las Palomas Olympic (Rocky Point, Mex), Jay Benson Sprint (Albuquerque, NM), SharkFest Swim (San Francisco, CA), Santa Fe Sprint (Santa Fe, NM), and Elephant Man Olympic (Elephant Butte, NM). Planned 2011 Races: Las Palomas Olympic (Rocky Point, Mex), Jay Benson Sprint (Albuquerque, NM), SharkFest Swim (San Francisco, CA), Las Vegas Rock and Roll HM (Las Vegas, NV), and (more than likely) Soma HIM (Tempe, AZ). Schedule permitting, I may try to fit in the Santa Fe Sprint (Santa Fe, NM), and the Elephant Man Olympic (Elephant Butte, NM). Weightloss: My journey started the Monday after Thanksgiving in 2006. That day I stepped on the scale and weighed in at 220 lbs. A decision was made: To drive myself to lose weight, I would sign up for and complete a triathlon. That race was the 2007 Jay Benson Sprint... race time 1:22:48. (That race is now my "benchmark" race and have PR'ed it every time I return. My 2010 race time was 1:05:35 and am hoping again to beat that this year.) My current weight is 170 lbs (-50 lbs!) and am working towards a race weight at Las Palomas (04/30/11) this year of 160 lbs. At 160 lbs, I hope to enter "maintenance mode" as far as weight goes. What Will Make Me a Good Mentee: I have a huge appetite for learning and would like to gather a bit of focus on my training. I have been hanging around (mostly lurking) BT for a little while and am always impressed and inspired by many who post here. I'm am hoping that this mentor group can take that to a more personal level. |

Give yourself time to slowly build back the "easy" run miles then once your body had adjusted (and is pain free), slowly add back in speed work. |

Maybe not all, but most. So it's great to hae another on board that can help teach. Congrats on your weight loss, and your PR's. |
