Didn't feel so hot this weekend though, so there wasn't as much eating as usual. Does anyone have experience with carbon clinchers??? Are there brake pads that you can use with both??? The real answer is no, brake pads are not really interchangeable. It all depends on the braking surface. Aluminum braking surface - one type of pad. Carbon braking surface - need cork pads or composite pad. The pads can pick up some shards of aluminum, especially soft ones like cork or composite, those alu shards get embedded in the carbon on your carbon braking surface and that's bad! So if you have a set of training wheels and your race wheels have carbon brake surfaces, you need two sets of brake pads. I simply have two sets of brake pads/holders and swap them when I swap wheels, only takes a few minutes and saves those expensive race wheels. Of course if your carbon clinchers have aluminum brake surfaces, just ride the bike baby! Yep, they can also pick up bits of rock, and anything else coming off the road. Tire type really has nothing to do with the wheel/brake surface. I only have one set of brake calipers but it only take two minutes or so to switch all 4 pads out and really should not be a deciding factor when picking wheels (brake surface could be, but brake pads should not). |

Got fitted on my TT/Tri bike...awesome. I'll post pictures a little later on when I get back to GA and settled. Wasn't able to get any tri specific shoes just yet, but did manage to pick up a pair of new Sidi road shoes for $75 from the LBS. (75% off...wow). Also picked up an Adamo Road saddle for the TT bike. Going to take the Specialized Tri-Tip saddle and put it on the road bike when I pick one up. Just packing the rest of my stuff up this morning, then have to make the long drive back to GA today. it's nice being back in the states again. Glad to see everyone is doing well. On the fitness/weight loss front, I gained a few pounds during travel, but it should come off pretty easily once I'm able to get back into the routine of working out everyday. that;s awesome. Where did you go for your fitting? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Goal for this week: Get they hydration stuff on the Felt working the way that I want. Figure out if the aero bottle will work for me or if I need to go with another plan. Figure out where to mount the darn bike computer so that I have water and can actually see the display. |

I appreciate your help with my sanity check ![]() I've pretty much settled on the short sleeve T after reviewing my logs for running in that temperature. For a training run in the 40s, I'd probably go with a long sleeve T. I've been using aquaphor and I've been happy with that for anti chafing. Now on to worrying about what the heck I put down for my finish time and if I'm in what I think is the correct corral. And the shirt size, they did not say it was men's and women's so I assumed men's and now the shirt might be too small. And... Breathe girl The shirt fits fine. I was in the coral that I wanted to be in. Interested side note, this was The National Marathon to Finish Breast Cancer so there was a whole lot of pink. The women's shirts were pink. The men's shirts were white. I thought that was nice of them. |

It will only be the front wheel though, so pretty easy. Since you seem pretty gear savy, I have another question. My girlfriend is currently riding an -08 scott contessa. She has a triple, but would like to change it to a compact double. I know her crank arms are 165mm. Can I just go buy another crankset? What do I have to look for as far as bottom bracket compatibility? The rest of her bike is Shimano, so how do I tell what kind of bottom bracket she has? What's the deal with BB30 and english and whatever? What about her front derailluer? Do I have to swap that out also? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If they are both 10spd (or 9spd), you need ot make sure that matches first. Bottom brackets will be crank specific and should (or you can buy matching), come with the crank. Chain length will need to be adjusted (remove or add lengths depending, not sure how the match up between comapct and triple is) lastly, you'll need a double front derail and not a triple (although some triples can work with the double, you'll just have an extra set of shift space to be careful of, on a tri bike not much of an issue, road bike you'll want it to match). |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I meant you need to replace it with a 10spd as well, ie dont go out and get a 9spd crankset, the teeth are a dif width and it wont shift right, the 10spd stuff is thinner. If it has shimano on there now an ultegra will fit. of that the shimano line up is the same size, ie they will all fit on the same bikes. |

Fastest being 1:18, slowest being 1:35 which I purposely went slower to give myself a breather. It wasn't too long ago that I was in the 1:35-1:40 range...so keep it up. My goal this Friday is to do 10x100 sending off @ 1:50. |

![]() Had a great interval ride today. Took some of David's advice and changed it up a bit. Instead of doing 5ish minute intervals, I extended to about 10 minutes. Toned down the power goal from about 255 to 240...but after the first 2 intervals felt it was a bit too easy. So I pushed harder for the third and last interval and held 268 watts. Wasn't all that gassed after that...so I decided to keep pushing another 4 minutes or so at an all out effort. Averaged 300 watts for that segment, for an overall interval of 274 watts over 13:48. Averaging 23.8 mph including 2 hair pin turn arounds. Not sure where that came from...but I'll take it... ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We use ATVs at work, and I always managed to miss the certification training the last location that I worked at. So when I was eligible at my new office, I was all kinds of happy. The tri-training week ended well and the new one began well, so I was ecstatic about getting back into the swing of things w/ the bike and running, which made the week even better. So today I was on my second day of the ATV Basic course. It was going great. I was having a really fun time, until my ATV came to a very abrupt stop. So did my left arm. Unfortunately the rest of my body traveled just a little further. The ER doctor said it looks like a sprain. I'll be out of work for a week or three, and can't use that time to run. Hopefully I can get my bike on the trainer (my girlfriend will kill me if she sees it) and just spin sitting upright. Shifting will be a pain with my left arm in a sling, but I'll just leave it in the small ring up front. Yah, I'm really not happy about this. I abhor the idea of predestination or fate, but maybe this year just isn't for me. I'll know after the MRI, but I'm kinda irritated with the situation. Perhaps that's an understatement, but to say more would involve expletives which not only are frowned upon by the administrators, but I consider rather undignified also. |

![]() Sorry to hear about the injury. It sucks...no other way to put it. When I crashed my bike last year, I sprained my shoulder. Couldn't swim for 7 weeks...and was planning and paid for a series of 4 open water swims that summer. No refund and DNS all of them. Couldn't run for about 4 weeks due to where the road rash would rub. Ironically I could ride. Was confined to the trainer for a few weeks, but then had the best biking summer I could have ever imagined. I actually look back now and am glad things turned out the way they did. I'll cross my fingers on your MRI results...but just remember that life isn't all about what happens to you...it's more about how you react to what happens. Best of luck and get well soon. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My shoulder feels a LOT better today. I'm still going very easy on it, but it doesn't feel nearly as bad as last night. I'm determined to not be stupid; I figure the easier I go on the shoulder, the quicker it'll heal. Nothing feels torn and the doc agreed with that, so I actually feel ok with it today. The arm can lift on its own, so I can start GENTLY working on range of motion. I kinda freaked-out initially. With the way it felt when the ATV impacted the side of the depression, I thought for sure I'd separated it. Now I feel a lot better about it. I'll walk and try to get on the trainer and hopefully be back on the road in a week or two. ![]() |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() jgerbodegrant - 2011-02-16 7:15 AM That totally sucks Rick. If I were you I would be on the trainer too...just keep up your current fitness, ya know? Good luck and hopefully it's just a sprain! To all your questions: Yes. 1. First find out what kind of BB shell you have BB30, English, Italian. My guess is English. 2. Look for a crankset that has the spindle as part of the cranks, this will require using an outboard BB, not a big deal but easier to get say a ceramic BB upgrade for those. There are two flavors of outboard BB, if you get one with your cranks, all is well, but if you have Shimano cranks, you can't use an SRAM BB and vice versa. The spindle diameters on the non-drive side are different sizes ( of course they are! ). 3. As mentioned you will need to get a different front derailleur, find a compact one ( FSA makes a few good ones that are compact specific ) and make sure you get the right one, clamp on or braze on. 4. With compacts, remember that you are dealing with 110 BCD rings, so don't get think that your 39 will work from your other cranks, etc. 5. Consider a chain catcher....you don't want the chain to drop when going to the 34 from the big ring as you start a climb. That will get you sleeping in the shed with your bikes pretty quickly. Others have answered your questions, so I add a few cents worth. As for what you will pay on eBay, anywhere from $69-$200 is likely. If you really search well you might find a great deal. Mike |
