I had the best brick this morning. I did 13.34 miles on the bike at an 18.9 clip on a pretty hilly course. Kept the heart rate at a 166 max which given the intensity I'm very happy with. Used my small ring very well. I still had enough left for the run to run at 8:46 pace for 3.1 miles and the best part is the miles got faster going from 9:08, 8:46, 8:25 and the last .1 at 8:10. The course is the same inclines so that wasn't a factor.

My time on the bike was mostly zone 3 which was 3.25:1 on the time I crept into zone 4. The run was about 50/50 staying at the top of 3 and the bottom of 4. The bike hills I felt like my form was really good. I even racked my bike and locked it up fast pulling a 2:19 transition which is pretty fast given I have to pull stuff in and out of my car to make this change.

Certainly feeling much better now than I was earlier in the week.

The two largest hills on this course felt easy in comparison to Stamford although one of them reminded me of the bad hill from that course in that it made a 60 degree turn half way up.

Hope everybody has a good weekend. I'm taking tomorrow off and then doing my long bike on Monday.

Nice to hear that you had such a good brick! I had a good one this am too! 30 min bike at just over 16 mph which is good for me cause it was just a nice Z2 ride. Then a Z2 run for just over 3 miles right at 11 mins/mile. Much slower than you, but those paces are good for me while staying in Z2! Enjoy the 4th!

Very nice results on both your bricks guys!  I'm gonna do one midweek after the 4th.  As for me,  I did a short 1150 easy freestyle swim last night after work and boy, my technique felt way off!  But.... I didn't feel like crap so yay!  Back to training 100%.  Today's run is the last workout of recovery week, ~3miles in low to high Z3 range with negative splits. =)

I'm also going to put more time in saddle adjustments and easy test rides.  I put the original one back on and did not feel any pain in my left testicle (caused by new Adamo Road).  I followed all of the documentation how to install the saddle and if anything, my scrotum is hanging over the front part of the new saddle.  So I don't know where the pain is coming from.  Ughhh!  I'm not giving up on the saddle, I know it may be the solution for long term good health in my crotch area.  ^_^

Great job. The only person we need to compete against is ourselves. I look at the other Scott's bike times and think wow that would be nice but it's really irrelevant.. Keep up the good work.

I did 40.74 this morning in 2:15:15 for a pace just over 18MPH. Course was fairly hilly especially the first half so I was really happy with my ride. It wasn't overly hot. Probably low 70's when I started and mid 70's when I was done. However the humidity level was off the charts. Around mile 27 I realized that my hands were so sticky trying to open my gel that it felt like a little kid who had let M&M's melt all over his hands.

Hope you all have a great 4th.

Did a 20 mile bike today, and was able to time it to avoid the small town parade.  This was a win-win since I hate parades.  It was pretty hot, but shady for the first half.  The shade dried up for the last half and even though I kept drinking water I found myself slowing down alittle.  Overall, a great day and a great ride.

Daughter left on deployment this morning.  She's going to Gulf Port Mississipi for a week of processing (paperwork, vaccination, etc) then to El Paso for 4 weeks of training.  After that it's off to Guantanamo Bay.  She was so ready to leave but I have many emotions going on: proud, sad, happy for her, scared.  Good to use those emotions to help fuel my workouts.

Hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend.

It was disgusting wasn't it... I also did a long bike this day and was so glad that it was over.  After my long bike, went to the beach and did a 1.2 mile swim. I was dropped off the coast 1.2 miles off and had to swim to shore. The boat was ahead of me watching for other boaters and for something to site off. My taper week. 1/2 IM on Sunday!

I rode through a parade route where people were setting up their chairs and I was thinking other than Macy in NY no thanks.

I hope everything goes well for your daughter. I would be feeling all of those emotions as well. It's a lot to deal with as a parent.

Long range weather outlook is good. You'll have to let us know if the lake is truly goose-poop.

I was having a great ride so when it ended I was thinking I could go longer but shouldn't. I got off and my legs felt great and I thought about turning it into a brick but knew the wife and kids would revolt if I went in to retrieve my sneakers given the time. That said I couldn't get in the shower fast enough and you could just feel the grime falling off.

Had an awesome OWS in the FRIGID Atlantic yesterday morning at the Outer Banks of NC . It was so cold I was gasping for the first 10 min! I was mostly just offshore of the breakers. I took on some water, but was pleased with my sighting and bilateral breathing - eventhough I could only crawl for a few minutes at a time (it made me gasp to keep my face in the water for very long). When I got out of the water, I felt great but must have looked drunk cause I couldn't walk straight for several minutes - like when you play that game where you spin around a bat! Guess all the bobbing messed up my equilibrium. Ended up swimming abt 1 mile in 45 mins =)

A great weekend on the bike for me! Tried out a pre/during drink for my bike. Seemed to work pretty good. Did 2 longer bikes 35+ miles each on a nice somewhat hilly area. Felt great! First ride, chain fell off within 1000 yards then a flat tire about 5 miles from home. Still felt pretty good.

Less then 2 weeks from first Oly...tapering starts next week!

On a side note, at a sporting goods store, I frequent, I recently had a run of bad service there. emails not replied to, indifference sales people instore etc. I was told to let the supervisors know...they are going to install a Sigma wireless cadence computer on bike free of charge. I may see how much they would charge me to up it to a Garmin which with cadence/heart rate runs about $370CDN$.

Taking the bike in this morning!

A couple of race questions:

1)sun tan lotion? what kind do you use? Do you apply it before the swim? after?

2) I have a 2 piece outfit...does anyone wear the top swimming? Or do you put it on after the swim?

Thanks!

Good questions man!  I'd put sun tan lotion before the swim to save time during the race.  I also have a 2 piece outfit and I'd put the top on before the swim (only if it's a compression type shirt).  =)

Looks like alot of us had some great cycling this past weekend!  Woot!  I myself had a great Z3 18 mile ride yesterday.  I wanted to go cycling Sunday but I spent too much time tweaking the settings of my new saddle and I think I finally got it right!  The LBS was too busy to help with that so I had to do it on my own.  I just have to make sure I'm sitting in the correct position or else my left nut would start hurting again.  I'm super excited to finally break in this saddle!  Rawr!!!  =^.^=

Been thinking of finishing this tri season with an Olympic distance race. ^_^

I have a couple sprints happening about a month apart and wanted to make sure it's okay for me to do a race of this distance.  My training schedule will put me at peak distance (following 10% rule) which barely matches the Olympic distance before I have to taper off.  I'm a bit concerned about the stress load on my body and being new to triathlon.

What do you guys think?  My sprints tris are happening July 31st and Sept 11th.  The Olympic tri race is happening Oct 9.

I am sure the 6 miles will be doable. That 10% rule is for running only though. What are the volumes going up to these races look like?

Remember it's all based on fitness. Lets just say that last year being my first year of triathlons, I did every distance except a full IM... My first ever triathlon was actually a 1/2.... I knew I could swim the distance, bike the distance but never ran over 8 miles. Me being who I am was convinced the week of the event to sign up. Who convinced me was one of my best friends. Well, lets just say it was a long day. I finished the 1/2 but it took 7 hours and change. Something I swore I'd never do again. (Meaning the time) So, if you get your volume in, and you are able to reach critical volume lets say 9/3's the distance of the swim, 8/3's the distance of the bike, and 7/3's the distance in the run in one week. I feel you will be able to do the distances required for that particular distance.  In fact, Qt2, recommends that an athlete who can't meet these distances for a 1/2 or full, not recommending doing the event.   Hope that helps!
