I just wanna say, i have been part of mentor groups pretty much since i started on this site in 2008, this is by far probably the best most informative group i have been part of, thanks for all the great tips and thoughts, and FRED, thanks for having us all.

So, since we discussed a little bit about recovery, how many of you after a hard effort or race bloat and retain water/weight/stuff??

I had 3 pretty aggressive anaerobic days in a row, i am 8lbs heavier than Sat morning. After a hard effort race, i tend to bloat like a dead deer on the side of the road in summer, anyone else have these issues, any thoughts on what to do, or just keep drinking water and let it all "pass"??

i do not get GI issues while racing, i actually have a pretty iron stomach, but sometimes i even tend to lock down while going long and for a few days after.

golfpro - 2012-01-31 8:51 AMRunning this morning after a dentist visit. Deep tissue massage around noon followed by a bike ride enjoying today's unusual forecast of 60deg weather.

Aside from the dentist, that sounds like a stellar day!

I just got back from the dentist too LOL.

I ran 8 this morning although was planning on 11 but did not end up working out (teething baby!!).  I ended up just adding some intensity to the run which worked out good.  Hopefully I can get my long run in Thursday morning instead.  Heading to the pool at noon today for 2K.

50 degrees today..bye bye snow.

mndiver - 2012-01-31 4:26 AM I'm having way more fun on my fat tire bike than I should. Going to have to be careful and make sure I don't abandon riding my Tri bike. Going to try and get a hard interval ride on the trainer tonight if I can fit it in between basketball practice and everything else needed to get done.

No such thing as too much fun IMO.  We ain't pros.  If it's not fun, why do it?

Don't forget the cookies.  Agree with Chris, we do this cause it is fun.  Enjoy the fat tire.  It helps you from burning out on the usual routine.

Jan numbers are down a bit from Dec.    A bit of vacation and sickness to blame though.  Still a fairly solid month, except for the swimming, but that was due to the pool being closed for half the month

January's totals:
Bike:16h 44m 11s  - 255.02 Mi
Run:15h 24m 31s  - 81.99 Mi
Swim:

7h 16m 28s  - 17653.84 Yd

Interesting thread on walking over in TT.  Get your typical responses, either train more/harder so you don't have to walk to walking is fine.  I am in the latter camp, although I endevour to run as much of it as I can

While I never train a run/walk, I have walked every long course I've done.  Probably overcooking it on the bike/bad pacing.  Maybe I should train run/walk.  I've done half marathons where run/walkers have beaten me.  Of course, even in my "run" portion I wouldn't be running that fast.

Being forced to walk in a race is different than planning to walk in a race, IMO, though.  For me, every time I walk, it gets harder and harder to start running again, so I put it off as long as possible.  Maybe embracing it sooner would be better....

Thoughts here?  Is it OK for you to enter a race knowing you are going to walk?  Do you plan to walk?

Yes and Yes and at one point yes, but now it is a no.

I walked the 2 mile run portion of my very first Tri, I was hurt and had no choice. I walked all the aid stations last year in my Half Iron race, that was my plan from the get go.

I have busted my bum to try and NOT walk this year, that is my goal (as well as take 20-25mins off the run time) so walking is not planned. But, until race day, we will see how it is going that day and do whatever is needed.

I will say, i walked a portion of all my tri's the first 2 years, but when i finally ran the whole race in a sprint, i felt so dang proud of doing it finally.  At the time it was a huge accomplishment, now in a sprint i cannot even consider walking. I fully expect to walk a little in both my halves this year, but i am going to try not to if i can help it.

Hey Gang,

The Tri Gang kind of catchy.......

I have a swim on today.  Did a 90 min CT ride yesterday with 3x20’ @200w.  I am keeping my intensity lower so all power is capped at 200w.  Real good and smart advice from a good friend.

capped? What is the thought process here?

Ditto on what Fred said. I have only been off my treatment for about 20 days. I still have a lot of drugs in my system. I have 3 post treatment blood works checks. 1st one coming up in about 10 days, then in 3 months and then in 6 months post treatment. If I make the 6 months with Gods grace and all the blood work is good then I'm cured. If not accept my fate and train what I can.

I certainly don't think anyone needs permission to walk, whether that's their plan or not their plan. Triathlon can be many different things to many different people.

Completely agree.  Not everyone is gunning for a podium or to make sure they beat the person 50 feet in front of them.  Regardless, do whatever makes you happy at the end of the day.

I don't like walking so I try not to.  No, really, I just hate walking.  Period.  Just ask my dogs.  But, if I get into a race and half to walk a bit to make it to the finish line, then so be it.  It's never cause I went into a race under trained, it is always cause I made an effort mistake somewhere along the line in the race.  That being said, I did the Mt Lemmon marathon here in Tucson, which is basically 26.2 miles uphill.  I leap frogged a couple all the way up the mountain that was doing a run/walk method.  So, I don't think running the whole way is necessarily faster and walking as a strategy is necessarily slow.  And when I got to the steepest part of the mountain, let me tell you just how happily I embraced the run/walk strategy.    I started running again later but had no problems in my mind doing what I needed to do to get to the finish line
