Morning TAN,

I got to receive an electricity bill of $500 for a 500 sq/ft apartment today.  And we weren't even HERE for 10 days over the last month.  WHAT.THE.FUUUUUUUDGE???

There will be a conversation with ComEd that I think this is ridiculous, but I don't think ComEd is going to care.  Ugh.

Good Gawd....3800 sq ft. home was $175 and a $90 gas bill....Holy lord....do you have a pool and a tanning bed in there?
My apartment bill was $30 last month. Hahahaha

How many kW are you using? You're wasting energy somewhere. I know power is expensive in Chicago, but you've got to be wasting power somewhere. Turn off lights, turn down heater and bundle up...

Clearly the meter is being misread.  I don't have the heat on during the day (put on  layers and under blankets), I've put plastic over the windows to keep the cold out, we aren't running a space heater, and there's only 2 lights that we turn on, plus the TV and laptops.  If those add up to $500/month of electricity then I've been paying entirely too little for the last 17 years or so.

Still think I'm wasting power somewhere?

Phone chargers? Our Florida Utility will do a thing where you turn the power off entirely (flip the breaker) and they check to see if the meter is still spinning. If wires are crossed somewhere, the neighbor in an apartment or condo could be using power and you get billed.

It's also interesting that the customer service from ComEd isn't trying to help. Customer service is a huge factor in rate cases. How many kW did you use last month? I can look up averages. If its way off, I can give you a number to call (the guy in charge of distribution spoke at a conference last month and we drank beers-he may tell you to call customer service, but he also may get an energy services person to come do an"energy audit".

Mon, Tony, by my calculations, you had to use 4,000 kW... That's a lot of power. That's like 2.5 the average home. Definitely something wrong there. Keep calling customer service. Wen you mess up their statistics with your complaints, they'll do something about it...

Even if phone chargers are left plugged in - how does that possibly equal $500/month?  We've asked for someone to come out and check/re-read the meter, and of course it would cost us an additional $100 to have that service.  I firmly believe the meter hasn't been read properly for either last month or this one but the response from ComEd is that it will all even out in the end.

I'm definitely going to look at having an energy audit done though.

Thanks Matt - I don't think there's any way a 500 sq/ft apartment could even come close to using 4,000kWh.

Ugh!

Energy audits are free in FL. Maybe a letter to the ICC (http://www.icc.illinois.gov/electricity/) would get some attention.

It's funny when one thoughtful letter to a commissioner spins up a whole energy company.

ComEd's guy was speaking at that conference all about manhole inspections. Now I see the problem... They have their heads up a manhole... Roadhouse?

Yes, somehow that seems very appropriate in this situation!       (and thanks for the link!)

Teejaay - 2012-12-14 9:27 AM Monica....I have an all electric house. Dryer, water heater and air/heat unit. I live in an 1800sf house with a ton of big single pane windows. I use my dryer almost every day. My child leaves every light in the house on in the morning. Blow dryers hum. Computers and TVs are on all the time. Three to four showers are taken every day ....long hot ones draining the water heater. And in the summer I run my air 24/7 at 70 degrees and the most my electric bill has been is $305 when it's 115 out. I know youse live in a super old building ...maybe something has gone wonky with the wiring.

There's definitely something wonky going on with the meter.  Tony called and got them to cancel the bill until it could be "investigated".   I'm not really sure what that means, but hopefully something good!

It's been in the 20s in the AM. That's pretty wintery. Today it shall "warm" to the 50s. Wheeee!!! Imma wearing sweaters and such.
Morning TAN. Today was a ferry ride across the lake to get the car to the dealer for a service. It's down in the high 20's so I'm in my rib knit sweater but don't need the jacket. My wife calls it my Hilfiger look, but I'm not a fan of the cold. The skies are clear so things need to be done before the storm hits on Monday...

It's been winter here most of the week too.  The hot tub kicks in when it gets into the upper 30s. I'm sure the neighbors love hearing that thing run all night.
