Oh words of wisdom.  I find at races my warm up is a long walk - the carpark/transition/portapotty/start line - all far from each other!  Then of course there is the contortionist yoga moves to get into the wet suit.

bcraht - 2013-03-22 6:03 AM Is the difference between bewbs and boobs like the difference between naked and nekkid?

Perhaps. I think. I dunno. I feel like I'm chewing gum every time I say BEWBS mentally. I always giggle at nekkid and never at naked.

Bewbs kinda creeps me out to be honest.

The word?

I don't like the word breasts or bosoms!!!  Give me T.its or Boobs any day of the week.

Ew. I 100% agree.

Maybe we could share what we do. I'll begin.
I run really slowly for about 10 minutes when I am going to run. Bike slowly for 10 minutes when I am going to cycle. And do drills for 10 minutes when I am going to swim. That's it. So far, so good.

Great idea. For 5k-HM I will jog for 20 minutes or so and then do about 5 strides or so (quick relaxed running, getting up to speed then floating for about 100 meters) Marathon is about the same but the jog is more like 10 minutes. For a hard workout I've found about 2 miles jogging is good, then the rest is dependent upon the workout that follows. For example, If its a track workout we generally do strides then a fast lap. I find it important to have a small portion towards the end of your warmup to be what you perceive to be "fast."

Well, right now, I am walking for 5min/0.5km before I start running.  Biking I just spin easy for a few minutes while I get my workout up on TR and my watch going.  Swimming I follow what the coach puts on the board, but generally about 600m combo of swim, pull, kick.  I need a looooooooong warmup before I feel comfy in the pool (ie breathing under control).

I have found the same to be true for swimming. I realized this afternoon that I was at about 800m before I felt really comfortable. Makes me wonder now much sense sprints make for me, especially those with a 400m swim. I will keep doing them, and I could try to warm up first, but in tt starts, I don't know how much benefit I would get because I would end up standing around for 20 minutes before swimming.

jobaxas - 2013-03-21 12:28 PM So yesterday I schmooze down to Urban Hotel and meet up with two Macca FB friends Noel doing his third and Brett doing his first. Brett brought his friend Dave and their wives. Man triathletes are the nicest folk. Hung around chatted a lot to the Bondi Rescue boys. Adriel? Did Auckland his first 70.3 and was the fastest age grouper he's very modest though. Reidy remembered me from Auckland oh you're the girl who shouted go on Reidy every time I went past you. Yes indeedy Reidy! Then had a chat to Cam Brien I truly would like him to get one more win or have the epic battle with Crowie like last year. My man Christisn Kemp has a double stress fracture so he's out. Caroline Steffen lovely as ever remembered me from Auckland too!!! Finally Crowie very much a happy dad. If a man could look radiant he was. Out for dinner with Macca friends. Tonight meeting more of the celebs and Macca crew at the carbo night. Cannot wait... There will be more pics tonight!!! Lovin it

This "Skrat" is jealous...

Ummmm I hate to admit this (please don't kill me)... I am horrible at warming up.  My routine for swimming is - jump in and swim at a moderate pace.  I guess that counts.

For cycling - I just jump on the bike and go...

For running - I have a routine of stretching.  Always stretch my calves, quads, hamstrings and usually loosen up the ankles.  I don't pre run - or run slow - or walk to warm up.  I just take off, and usually manage to maintain my pace throughout the run.

How would a warm up (and what would you recommend) help my running?

Yes, no kidding. I saw it first hand lol.

"Performance may be improved, as an appropriate warm up will result in an:

Increased speed of contraction and relaxation of warmed muscles

Dynamic exercises reduce muscle stiffness

Greater economy of movement because of lowered viscous resistance within warmed muscles

Facilitated oxygen utilization by warmed muscles because haemoglobin releases oxygen more readily at higher muscle temperatures

Facilitated nerve transmission and muscle metabolism at higher temperatures; a specific warm up can facilitate motor unit recruitment required in subsequent all out activity

Increased blood flow through active tissues as local vascular beds dilate, increasing metabolism and muscle temperaturesAllows the heart rate get to a workable rate for beginning exercise"

Sorry for the formatting. I probably don't need to sell warming up. Just do a few searches and you can get any additional information not covered above.
