Decided to 'come up for air' in the midst of the grading marathon I've got going on today. The crazy weather and missed school days meant that many, many assignments came due within a 3 day period this week. Of course, they need the feedback from this work to complete what they're going to do next week. Managed a 3 mile run just to clear my head and picked up my new cycling shoes before I get back to the grind.

Speaking of shoes...what are your thoughts on cleat 'float?' My new shoes have the red Look cleat which has approx 9 degrees of float. I had the gray (4.5 degree) in my old shoes, but found I was always trying to twist my foot or having to have my cleats readjusted to compensate for some knee tweaking while climbing.

Blanda- how did the race go? Did they cancel the swim?

Nancy- I've always used red look cleats. They work well and I've never seen a need to switch to anything else

Suzy- how are you feeling? Back to normal?

Today was another "triathlon" workout day. Started with a 3100 yard swim, drove home, got on the trainer for 3:05 hours and then had a short brick run for 15 minutes. Now its time to relax for a while and get ready for tomorrow's workouts.
Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

How did it go? Well I hope.

Spending the weekend two hours from home at a two day swim meet. Mixed results for my daughter but some crazy fast swimming from the fast heats.

Hi guys. I have had a very busy 5 weeks. My spouse had the flu then pneumonia and we are about to go live with new electronic documentation at the hospital I work at. I have worked 14 days in a row.
Yesterday I worked 6 hours then did my 18 mile long weekly run, whew I was done.

I started my marathon training Dec 2. I have lost 15 lbs without changing my diet. I have never run these distances or this much weekly.

I am enjoying it and am really excited about the event. One thing I have noticed though with my new distances, especially 16 & 18 is how sore I am. yesterday I was basically sore from my hips down, glutes, ankles, big toes, hamstrings, feet, jeez. Usually the soreness is a lot better the next day but at these distances I am staying sore for days.

Does anyone have suggestions for mitigating the ouch?

Thanks for any ideas!

Mary...my suggestions are probably things you may already do:
1. Stretch afterwards--even better, do a short yoga session
2. Get on the foam roller
3. Soak in a hot bath with 1-2 cups epsom salts and 1/2 cup of baking soda
4. Many people are now saying that compression wear isn't really effective, but I believe it is. When I was training for my marathon last winter, I wore my compression sleeves for the rest of the day after my 16+ mile runs. It really did help alleviate soreness.

Rene, solid training day! Exhausted just reading it.

Mary, glad the marathon training has been going well! Nancy had great advice for the discomfort. Keep it up!

Well, the triathlon went on as scheduled. As I should know by now can happen, the weather turned on a dime and it ended up being a lovely day with some cool in the breezes (rare on Guam), and helpful cloud coverage.

The swim was bananas, as expected! There was one point on each of the four laps where the current is so strong that you could be staring at the same rock under you for a while before you can pull forward. The top half of my body and bottom half were going in two different directions, and I had to swim to my left to avoid getting pulled off course. Swimmers were getting slammed into each other by the swells at each turn as we tried to round the buoys tightly. It was exhausting, but I didn't feel like just turning onto my back this time. Last time I did this distance in those waters I actually paused in that one section of strong current and yelled "UGH", lol! It sucks to work so hard and not get anywhere!!

It was a character building, 50 minute, 1500m swim. Whew!

The bike was manageable, even with the extra wind, and the run felt good. For the first time ever I didn't have the contracted calves for the first 1.5-2 miles getting off the bike! Wonderful. We had a guy doing the race in a banana costume on a tricycle, I kid you not! I'll find a picture and post it. I'm sure the Tri Fed will have some up of him soon.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Blanda-that swim sounds brutal. But, it seems you managed it well and much better than last year? Great job on getting another olympic under your belt.

Mary-Great to have you checking in. Sounds like the marathon training is going well. Nancy's advice was spot on. It takes the body a long time to build up fatigue resistance to those long distance efforts so recovery is important. I find that some active recovery such as a very light spin on the bike or an easy swim always helps. The other thing I have heard...but not really tried is to elevate your legs. Laying on the floor with your legs straight up against a wall. Suppose to help keep fluids from accumulating in the legs.....also is discussed on one of my yoga DVDs as a good relaxation pose. Many swear by ice baths. I've done them in the past after really hard training days but frankly they are too much trouble for me to do regularly.

Rainy day here. I have an easy bike scheduled and a short run. Looks like I'll be in the garage for the bike.

Dear friends, let me apologize for being MIA for quite a while. Several weeks ago I had a setback in my recovery that turned out to be far more impactful mentally than physically. I basically just gave up. I stopped doing my exercises, stopped PT and spent most of the time feeling sorry for myself. Trust me; it’s a really crappy place to be. My family, doctors and my physical therapist tried to snap me out of it but as much as it made sense intellectually, I just wasn’t feeling it.

Well today my wife drove me up to Uvas Reservoir which was to be the site for the swim on the tri events coming up. Well that’s never gonna happen. The water level is at 3% of normal. In almost all sections you can walk across it because the water is confined to a trickle less than a few inches wide. Where we stepped over should have been 30-40 feet under water.

But on the drive I did see scores of cyclists. It was a beautiful 75 degrees with a slight breeze. I was jealous. So when we got home I took the bike down off the rack for the first time since April 6th of last year. Drove it over to my LBS for a quick once over and to fill the tires.

Then I hit the road for a very quick 20 minute ride. Might have gone farther but my wife was a wreck when I just rolled it down the driveway.

I don’t think I have dug myself all the way out of the hole but I can see the path. Planning to ride my bike over to the PT tomorrow.

Anyway, like I said. Sorry for not being a better teammate.

Be well.

Blanda-sounds like a truly brutal swim! Great job pushing through it, and I can't wait to see the banana guy!
Stuart-Way to get back on the horse/bike! I always tell people that everyone starts where they are, so good job on getting the bike from the rack and out the driveway! Good luck at the PT tomorrow, and keep it up!

I had a good/tiring weekend! I got in a good 6 mile run on Friday, then headed up the Western North Carolina mountains for some mountain biking. I don't own a mountain bike, but rented one, and really loved it! I biked a lot as a kid, and it felt just like that again. My friend and I camped out that night, and then I headed back this morning. I got in a 14-mile run this afternoon, and felt good. Just shoes, shorts, and a watch since the weather was so great-can't really ask for better weather!

I've got my first race coming up this Saturday, a local 5k, so I'll keep the training up and maybe take off Friday to rest the legs a little. I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Stuart-

So glad to see you back. I totally understand the places we go mentally sometimes when it seems like the path either to, or back to, where we want to be is just overwhelming. I am happy to hear that it sounds like you took some positive steps down that path today. I know from my perspective your feedback and participation here has been helpful and useful, so from a selfish standpoint, I am certainly looking forward to your renewed participation here.

Enjoy the ride to PT tomorrow!

Stuart. Sorry to hear about the setback that threw you for a loop but I am really glad that you are back on the horse that bucked you off. My workouts have been a little "sucky" lately and it is always good to remember how good I (we?) have it.

Jon. Looks like no one has responded to your post about being home with the baby for awhile. I think your plan is a good one. I see no problem with riding the trainer with a baby monitor near by. I have done the "watching my kids shuffle" a couple times in the past and it is always a juggling act. If you can maintain your fitness by any way possible until your wife reappears I would call that success.

We just got back from a family weekend at a swim meet in Battle Creek, Michigan. My daughter swam seven events and had a blast. She isn't as fast as she wants to be but that will come if she keeps working at it and keeps having as much fun as she did with all of her friend's at the meet. Wait a second. That sounds like good advice that I could give to myself......

Stuart- I was beginning to get worried about you. Glad that you're back and posting to the group. You've really had a difficult year and have done really well with everything that life has thrown at you.Your wife sounds like a very smart lady! BTW- Get a trainer. That way you can ride and not freak out your wife.

I don't know if you remember but I didn't handle my injury very well. I dropped out of the mentor group and only talked to a few people on BT. It is frustrating when your body won't cooperate with what your mind wants it to do. It is also very easy to get depressed and give up.   What helped me was to make achievable daily goals related to rehab, recovery and diet.   A few years ago when I broke my toe and had surgery my husband took me to the gun range as a way to relieve stress. I joined a competitive women's shooting club and made a lot of new friends. I would highly recommend competitive shooting as a great sport that one can do while recovering from a lower body injury.

Welcome Back!!

I think everyone will have their personal recommendations, but I recommend a Stick and a foam roller. I use both pretty religiously, just rolling until it hurts. I also make sure to stay off my feet when I start hitting a high training load. I make an effort to stay active during the day, but once I start really feeling it, I remind myself to stay off my sore legs!

Stuart! Again, your positivity in the face of a tough time is amazing. Glad to see you dusting off the knees and getting back up. Keep going!

So, this happened at this weekend's triathlon (it was a dual distance with a choice between sprint and Olympic.. pretty sure he did the sprint):

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

Chris I am glad you found my comments of value. I will be around for a while.

Jason I think that concept of remembering how good one has it when they do really hit my kids. They are not used to seeing me down like this and if there is one positive, I think it has them thinking more about living in the moment. BTW – seven events is a load. I remember those days. Just make sure your daughter keeps having fun!

Rene I do remember your recovery period. Glad you got through it. I did some shooting for a very brief time when I was a kid. It was fun at the time but never excited me. Maybe now and under these conditions I might think differently. As for my wife, we have been together for forty years and she still hasn’t kicked my sorry backside to the curb so while in many ways she is indeed smart, she must be a tad bit insane as well.

Blanda thanks for the pic. No I'm back to ‘If he can do it, so can I’!

Thanks again everyone,

Stuart

Mary, I have a pair of Zoot recovery compression tights that I wear to deal with the soreness after long runs and rides. They work well for me. A foam roller also works really well. The other thing I've been doing is short recovery runs on grass on the day following a hard run. I thought I was too old for active recovery, but it's helped.

Blanda, glad you survived the swim in your triathlon. That swim sounds brutal. Way to hang with it!

Stuart, sorry to hear about your setback, but glad you are working your way back and can see the path back again. I hear that the Silicon Valley Triathlon is moving from Uvas to Half Moon Bay this year. I'm not sure about the other triathlons scheduled for Uvas.... I also saw a lot of bicyclists and runners out on the roads this weekend (I was one of them!). Hopefully, I'll see you out there too.

Jamie, your mountain biking / camping trip sounds like a blast! Good luck in your 5K this weekend!

Stuart!  Welcome back. I've missed your swim advice.  I've had a couple of injuries that have had me feeling similarly and like Renee I gave up BT.  Eventually I made it back to the real world.  I am glad you are on your way.  Please stick with the PT.  It'll serve you well in the long run (pun intended).

Mary,  for me ice baths and a recovery beverage are critical links to a speedier recovery.  I drink chocolate milk for the protein and CHOs within 15' of finishing a long run, usually while sitting in a painful ice bath.  Both are really worth it.  If you have recovery tights (like SKINS), I would put them on afterwards.  Later in the day I'll do some foam rolling.  Of course for really hard efforts, there is no way around some soreness post run.

Blanda and Jamie, it sounds like you both had a great weekend.  Blanda's may have been a little more "exciting" than I would have liked (e.g. swim!).

My indoor/outdoor tri was fun, although an outdoor run after a 20K TT indoors was cold (-4F).    I beat some of the college girls and a few of the boys too.  Swim still needs the most work which wasn't a shocker.  I know I have room to improve on the bike and the run as well.  Either way, I made it into Nationals so I can cross that to-do off my list.  And to be completely up front about it, no other 50-54 year old women signed up.  I thought I had at least one to beat, but she never showed.

Thanks Jason. And boy wow, forgot how tough P90X plyo workout is. It was all I could do last night so I could still be on dad duty while the wife is away. Maybe sneak away for a swim today at lunch and take some work home with me tonight while the kid sleeps. That is if I can find my quads, I think they're shredded up on the floor at my house from that plyo. Ouch.

Great job on the tri Suzy. Not sure I'd be too keen on an outdoor run after the swim and bike inside, especially at -4F. When are Nationals? That's a great goal to work towards.

With stress comes inflammation!  Plus you pounded the skiing pretty hard over the last several weeks.  Make sure you take in plenty of greens (alkaline foods) to combat it.  I'd recommend extra sleep too, but I am guessing the looming deadline of April 15th is preventing that from happening.  Hang in there!

PS.  Yes, I am doing Nationals in August.  It's basically in my backyard, only a 75' drive from Madison to Milwaukee. Plus I'll get a chance to meet Randy!

Able to sneak a swim in today at lunch. Felt great. Had a good streamline feel to the whole swim. Last few laps I noticed a woman watching me and when I got out she turned out to be the coach at the masters class telling me that I should give masters a try. I chatted with her a bit and she said that she'll bring her iPad and video people for feedback sometimes and other times swims with everyone or helps works on certain things. Very nice woman. I told her maybe in the summer I'd try it out as it's Mon/Wed/Sun from 8-9 PM and those hours don't work with the kiddo at home but during the summer it's a bit more flexible because my wife has the summers off. She mentioned possible a lunch time class which I'd love to see pan out. People say how much swim fitness they gain when they join a masters class and I know it'd help me a ton, just not sure if the timing is right. We'll see.

The start of the race I had the jitters. I was watching the other age groups start as they seeded the swim with over 1000 participants.
