I had an unbelievable weekend and it was such a treat (for me) do get away from swim, bike, run... If only for a little bit!  It was very hard considering I haven't worn a backpack since May, then went out and did this 18 mile jaunt.... I am tight in the hips today!  But still smiling!

Fantastic pictures and what a great weekend. It looks funny to see you bundled up in the snow when the rest of us are sweltering through the end of summer

www.vibramfivefingers.com. Is the web address for the shoes. They have no padding at all, just rubber tread and force you to run in a "non-heal-strike" style that saves the knees. I try to get a 2 mile run on mine weekly.

A friend just sent me this as a joke idea for getting back at her husband.  Serious OUCH. Be glad she's not your wife!!  BTW, the shoes are super glued to the floor.

my 2cents on the life of running shoes.  I too was expecting longer life out of my shoes, but ended up replacing then after MAYBE 200 miles.  After the 3rd occurance of blisters on toes, pain running down the bottom of my pinkie toe to the arch, and achy (sp) knees I decided to try replacing the shoes.  It worked - no more pain.   My personal explanation was that because I was new to running my technique wasn't the best and I was stressing my foot strike = my shoes more than usual. My old shoes still look brand new and I now wear them for my walking shoes.   I assume you were properly fitted for your running shoes at a trained running store, correct?  That makes a HUGE difference as well.

Yup I went to a specialty store and they advised me what I needed. Certainly not cheap.

Gotcha. Kind of like wearing mocassins except each toe has it own spot. How long would a pair of these las and more importantly wouldn't you feel all the rocks etc one has to run across?

Awesome pics Steve. Looks like a great time.

Is the file on your computer or another website?  Are they flip flops glued to the floor?

Yes you feel the rocks, and you adjust your footing accordingly so that they don't make your heals strike the ground and feel them worse 8). As I only run on them 2 miles a week and there is no cushy structure in the middle to wear out I think they will last a very long time. Probably untill the fabrick on top of the foot rots out. Anyway its just a fyi, hopefully it is just your body adjusting to things and you will be good as rain in a few days.

So you use these for training purposes only?

I don't know that I would touch those shoes....

I feel like that would strain your body more.... I need a little "cushion for the pushin" when I run....

Everyone get their minds out of the gutter

Yes I just use them for training. The cushion encourages heal striking which hurts knees. The lack of cushion teaches you to use the arch of your foot to absorb the shock of impact rather than your knee. You run 90 + percent of your miles in the cushy shoes, but with the proper foot placement and turnover when your foot hits the ground. Thus the best of both worlds.

Anyway lots of literature about barefoot running out there, and Utube clips showing impact with shoes and barefeet etc.

Waterdog is someone I respect on the BT board he uses barefoot running to keep his form true and he puts on alot of miles.

Sounds way too technical... Just RUN!  Wife always says 2 things when I complain!

"Get over it, and suck it up!"

Ouch... I always shut up after that!

Thanks for all the insight gang. My knee feels almost 100% better today. I think I might have just overused it as I haven't ever gone that far before. I will find out more when I do my next run. Not likely 13K. Maybe 10 and see how that goes. I may just have to build a little more slowly to the longer distances.

Steve I like your wife's sympathetic encouragement.

I know I'm naive, but if the 5-fingered shoes are designed to give you the benefits of running barefoot, why not just run barefoot in the grass and save $90?
