Upbringing, I guess. You'd think 6 years in Catholic school would have made me hate it, but I think it taught me respect more than anything. [redneck] Who woulda thunk it? [/redneck] I go to a formerly-Episopal now-Anglican church and we have several services to meet the needs and wants of the community. All services have a sermon, but there's way more prayer involved in the other two services than with the contemporary service. And of course, different music in all of them. And our young adults service is basically worship and a talk and some hymn-y type songs (with guitar and piano, etc) and a teensy bit of prayer (we always end with a compline hymn, etc). But the good little Italian Catholic girl in me LOVES singing some Latin - which we almost never do. Never was Catholic, but singing in Latin, as well as in other languages is a whole lot of fun...as long as people are willing to work on pronunciation. Our choir tried that and you could hear 10 different words being sung at the same time. Oh, absolutely - probably why we don't do it much at church! Our choir director would have his hands full. My choir director in high school (at school, not church) taught us how to sing in Latin - we did a mass or a requiem every spring with a small orchestra. Lots o' fun. And our old choir director at church had us do a really good piece as the end to our CHristmas concert in 06, but he left, so we had an interim guy for awhile and our new guy is now finally getting super into it and will hopefully start cracking the whip. |

I did not realize things were that bad. On another note, can I go back and retake my race pics after I lose another 15 lbs.? Seeing all the fast people's pics before mine gets depressing after 50 pics or so. Not that I'm a fatty-fatty-two-by-four, but y'know. ![]() |

I wasn't actually serious. And the 'but' should have been 'people'. Have you flat out told the guy that you're not interested in the contemporary service. It's nice to know that I'm not the only young person who's not into the contemporary thang. I think we might have scared everyone else away from TAN, even that preacher dude lots of "butts" leave churches all the time... and actually the contemporary service is a boomer phenomenon. Many young people are moving toward more of the ancient music actually. The reality is that there is a pendulum swing between worship that is transcendent and worship that is more immanent... Is God in the everyday (praise/rock music) or something OTHER than everyday (Chant, etc... sometimes characterized as the "holy" We will always see a move back and forth between these two poles... -B Yeah, I have a friend who HATES the contemporary service. And some of the younger folk even go to the really traditional "high church" service at 11 am in the historic building. There is a somewhat-mega-church here whose young adult service is very "seeker friendly" and they are basically a rock-concert followed by a talk. In the long run... I honestly believe that the seeker service, while it will never die, is a bit of a fad. At the Lutheran campus ministry here at WVU, the chaplain goes for the high liturgy end rather than praise service... incense, chant, icons, etc... It's certainly not the most popular campus ministry as far as number go... but it has a solid attendance... -B |

In high school we had a Madrigal group. That was fun. All a'capella, no director so the songs were started by the lead quartet and some head bobbing, pitches off of an auto-harp, all different languages...that was a blast. Most fun singing I've ever done. I was lead tenor my senior year, they let me start a whole one song. We were really good too, which made it even better. |

If it's popular people may come once or twice and not get involved in the service, or feel that they get much out of it ( I know, the theory of "getting something out of a service" is a negative one to many people ), but if people come back regularly, even if it's fewer people, those people are probably a lot more likely to really get involved in the church, right? |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() wurkit_gurl - 2008-07-17 7:48 PM Holy carp, where was I while you were talking about church music?!! I sing with our choir at the 9 am service. Our choir is okay. The altos kinda suck. We never have enough tenors. Generally do decent music, though. Our 11am service worship band is good, but I like being done by 10:30, and they also do the Saturday night services and rehearse a lot more during the week. They do contemporary stuff and they have drums and a bass, but they're not SUPER rock-concert-like. Our young adult service worship band needs some serious help, and I'd join them except that they rehearse the same night as choir, and the choirfolk would be really sad if I quit. Somehow I get the feeling you're a soprano? Most of the alto sections I've been in have had they challenges, but I can't take high diva concentration of the soprano section. I know it's not all sopranos, but I think most choirs generally exceed the EPA guidelines. |

I think that I am a pretty good alto, well technically you could say mezzo, but I've never really committed to it. Personally I'm happy just singing harmony in a really good chorus, I don't need anything more than that. Though I sometimes think I should switch the amount of time I spend on triathlons and singing because I spend a lot more time working on the one that I don't have much talent in. Of course singing isn't likely to help prevent heart disease or type II diabetes so there's that. |

We don't have a ton of folks who have great musicianship, but alto is where you really need that! We have a lot of "sopranos" but only a few of us who are actually good. Many of the others are kinda quiet, etc. I'm sort of their golden child because 1.) I'm under 30, and most of them are old enough to be my parents and 2.) I'm a trained singer and have good musicianship. |

Have you gone back and watched any of those? I'm so spoiled by CGI now that that animation looks just terrible, but I still loved the shows. I'm actually glad that I got rid of my TV service and had to look for ways to watch shows online. It's much more entertaining to see what you really wanted to watch instead of watching whatever was on in that time slot. |
