Oh yeah, I'm playing now but I didn't weigh myself today but did yesterday. I'm down 2.5 from that number last week. If you need it Kate, I'll PM you.

Chuck came home from the hospital today.  Thanks everyone for the warm well-wishes.  I was able to do some workouts, but necessarily what I had planned or when.  Of course, only working half day through this helped a lot with that.  I doubt if I would have gotten in the workouts had I worked all day AND dealt with the hospital thing.

I was at 136.1 and feel like maybe I have broken through my little plateau thing.  And then again, maybe religiously tracking does what it is supposed to do.  My lowest BF percentage this week was 25.4%.  I haven't gotten down to or below 25% yet, but I am inching in on it.

Those tips were great, Lisa.  I was just about ready to throw away (or take to the running store for them to recycle) two pairs of old running shoes.  I think one of them will be used for that purpose on race day (Kate, do you need a pair of throw-away size 8 running shoes for Oceanside?)   Also, re the harbor swim.  I was thinking that maybe I had misremembered the swim.  I remembered waves, but since it is a harbor swim, there shouldn't be waves.  They explained that.  But even then, it isn't like swimming in the open ocean.  And there simply is no opportunity to get in three ows before March 27.  Maybe one.  Maybe.  The pool swimming will just have to suffice.

I have had one migraine in my life and l also thought - before that - "oh suck it up, it's just a headache."  It's not "just" a headache.

I have now used my Pool-Mate swim watch for the second time and this time it said that I swam 2300 meters (I think I did 2400), and my stroke count went way up as did my "efficiency number" (and the goal is lower numbers for both).   I don't feel like I fell apart in the space of week and plan to watch the lap counter each lap to see if it is me or the watch that is the problem.

I had a kind of interesting life experience at the pool yesterday.  I do 2400 meters now so this takes me a little bit longer so I am in the pool past 6:30am.  Apparently there is a second wave of swimmers who come in then.  My lane had the fewest people in it and this group of men jumped in and started swimming.  I'm slow and so am used to people passing me.  No big deal.  I have never, ever swum near people who swam that fast.  Very, very fast.  Amazing.  Apparently they are the competition team and, yes, they are fast.  Watching Olympic swimmers on TV is one thing, swimming in the same lane with very, very fast swimmers is another.   Did I mention that they were fast?

Have a good day everyone.  Remember, get that peach, track those mouthfuls, keep your eyes on the goal and everything else will fall into place.

227 today...Went to the doctor today after having a terrible night (tried to run and couldn't make it 20 feet without feeling like I was going to pass out.) Turns out I have vertigo.  Its going to be hard to get the peach squares. Trying to figure out exercises where I don't have to move or turn my head..I think I will be pretty limited.  On the bright side my appetite has been minimal so I am not overeating.

Vertigo is one of my favorite films!
My old San Francisco Apartment is in the film.
Sorry to hear Scott, that was James Stewart's character name in the film Scottie!
Is there a cure or treatment?
Sometimes I like being silly, nothing personal.

I have a friend who was going to be priest and then he watched a Kim Novak film (not sure if it was Vertigo) and then decided the priesthood was not for him.  He was probably twelve or something at the time.

How does one get vertigo?  Is this something that will pass.  How can you drive?  I'm sorry to hear about this and hope that it all works out for you.

Weighed in today at 192.  Thank goodness I'm down and not up again!  How did the rest of you do?

I haven't weighed in since the challenge ended. I'm scared to see the number. I think I'm going to wait until next week as I'm holding that lovely TOM water weight right now on top of not behaving this week.

You can get vertigo from a lot of nasty diseases and also brain bleed.  Fortunately for me it appears as there is fluid behind my ear (probably from this cold I have had for 12 weeks) that is throwing off my equilibrium.  I am fine one minute and then turn my head the wrong way and am unbelieveably nauseous for hours.  Yeah this is awesome.  I tried to go to work this morning and lasted 25 minutes. My paralegal took me to urgent care and then home.  They are hoping it will be gone in 10 to 14 days.   I am going to try and go tow work tomorrow and just hope I don't do anything to bring it back.

Wow thats awful. I had a friend with Vertigo and she fell off a ladder at work one time. scary stuff. Take care of yourself Scott... Hopefully it will pass sooner then later. The last thing you want is to fall off a bike or something.

I'm here...still have a cold bug that's just kind of lingering. Annoying sinus congestion, post nasal drip..but nothing hard core. Except exhaustion. So I have foregone all workouts this week to just get plenty of rest and not push myself. I'm heading to Maine this weekend to visit my mother since she's finally gotten over an extended flu bug or something. Scott, she was experiencing severe nausea too for awhile there. She wasn't diagnosed with vertigo but I think it was all related to the flu. She got promethazine for her nausea (even though I told her to tell her doctor Zofran because less drowsiness) and it seemed to work well. Now I'm worried I'll go up there for the weekend and she'll catch whatever I've got and get sick all over again!! LOL!! But at least I can rest and she'll wait on me like the best Mom in the world! I'll walk with her daily, she's gotten back up to her 3 miles so that's good. If my cough is lighter or possibly left my chest then I'll attempt running. If not I'll wait til I get back!

Very, very interesting.  As a proponent of the Paleo Diet, I have to wonder if the author would have had a different perspective if he had gone for true Paleo instead of Paleo for Athletes, a book that I largely did not understand, whereas the Paleo Diet book made lots of sense.  The author's conclusion on the last page is consistent with the Paleo Diet (with the exception of the grains).  He has you start out with basic Paleo and then add back in things to see if they give you trouble (a concept that seems a little screwy to me, but I can go with it).  The things that are likely to give people trouble, such as wheat and dairy, are not "allowed" on Paleo because humans have not yet evolved to the point where they foods are good or right for us.  That's the theory anyway.  The author cannot tolerate milk.  There are lots of gluten-intolerant people.  I can tolerate both gluten and dairy, but I have found that I don't "need" either.

Anyway, I really recommend that everyone reads this article.  Thanks, Lisa, for sharing.

I read this when my Outside came in - good stuff. Glad you found it online to share. Outside annoys me sometimes with its "man-centric'ness" which is arguably their main demo so I give em some slack, but every issue there's at least one good article like this. My take away from it was figure out what your near-relatives ate say past 200-500 years - not necessarily what paleo ancestors ate - that will be closer to what you should target for now diet wise. Throw in some knowledge that med diets and other diets have offered - healthly fats, lean meats, whole grains and find out what works for you.

There's also this article from the new york times on paleo-ites that you might find interesting.
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/10/fashion/10caveman.html?scp=1&sq=hunter%20gatherer&st=cse

I personally cannot do hard-core paleo, stomach doesn't tolerate lots of meat - but i sure do love me some buffalo!

Good morning ladies!  and Scott!

Keely and Scott - Hope you both are feeling better soon.  It stinks to be sick or injured when you are fired up to train.

I am getting ready for my half marathon.  I'm pretty excited about it.  I have do idea what to expect since it has been about 3 weeks since my last long run.  I've done some shorties and they have been ok so I am optimistic that I can power through.

What's everyone have going on this weekend?

I agree, you'll do terrific, Kate.

And I don't agree that the "usual workouts" are nothing special.  They may have been things you have done before, but each and every one of them gets us closer to our goals and that's pretty special.  And important.  Every rung on a ladder is a whole lot like the other rungs on the ladder, but just wait until one is missing and then see how important they are.  The bottom rungs matter, but are easier to work around if missing.  It's a lot tougher the closer one gets to the top.  All of us are well beyond the bottom rungs of our training and every workout is special and unique because each training session builds on so many before it.  OK.  That's my philosophical ranting for the day.

Good reminder for us all. Its all these little efforts that add up to the big picture being a success. Even if they are "sane" workouts compared to what we'll all be up to shortly. I'm trying not to do too much right now because my Group training starts in just a little over 2 weeks.

Scott don't worry about the time you have to take off to take care of your health. There is plenty of time until July. Most half IM training programs don't seem to be more then 5 months long or so anyway. Have you picked one out yet?

I tried an interesting soup recipe tonight a friend gave me. Shrimp/Butternut soup. I'm trying to find more interesting soups with veggies in it in my quest for better eating and getting on a better nutritional track. You guys have a favorite?

I love butternut squash soup, but I don't care for shrimp or other seafood.  In fact, I have a butternut squash right now waiting to be turned into butternut apple soup.  I've never made it before and will let you know how it turns out.
